From Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the NBC series revolving around Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), a New York City Police Department (NYPD) detective in Brooklyn's fictional 99th Precinct, who often comes into conflict with his commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher). Captain Holt is the best character in the show. Not just because Andre Braugher is an excellent actor. The writing for him is superb. He's a badass, but also an intellectual. He's hilarious, even when he's serious. One of my favorite things about the way they wrote him is that unlike most gay characters on TV or sometimes even those in real life, the fact that he's gay is just that: a fact. It's not his whole entire personality. We're not reminded of it in every second of screen time he gets. He's just Captain Holt, and there's his husband, Kevin.

That's what Andre Braugher said about his character. It's three dimensional. Holt is a gay police captain because he is a gay police captain. His personality doesn't surround that trait alone but the series showed that Holt is a great police officer in both intelligence and skills. The gay part is just an added trait. One of the greatest written characters.
