The information he was going through are trade secrets that families keep for generations. I get it, jake was in a tough spot, but you don't steal your mentor's secret recipe and open shop next door to them competing for the same thing and not expecting repercussions.

Don't mess with a Jedi Master. Jake didn't "ask for any gifts", well he's right about that - he stole Sig's info. Deck hand "you don't mess with a man's money", correct again, you don't steal info from other captains. AND Jake gets better pots than he was pulling.
