I was wondering about this and I’m glad a native speaker can confirm!

I think it'd be even funnier if there were another version of the same video with a Voltron: Defender of the Universe or Robotech quality of "so bad it's good" English dub of the video but I can understand why that isn't in the budget and appreciate the video being so good as it stands.

It's an 1970's japanese show, so it probabaly had 52 weekly episodes with moderate ratings, a buttload of merch, and suddenly dissapeared the next year when the next big thing hit the screen, and 5 years later was dubbed for broadcast in LatinAmerica and/or Europe.

This anime definitely only existed for a season, and only 1000 VHS tapes were ever made. They sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay and there's a ravenous fanbase of 200 people. There's also a small con in Iowa where they get anyone who worked in the building this anime was made in to host panels.

@@oneshot8109 Well, probably more than a couple animation tricks, like low frame rate + animating in twos instead of ones Plus the miniature camera effects, superior color grading previously unmatched (thanks to ACES), and a superb attention to detail.

First, he drew. Then, he blended some Blender into his drawing. Finally, he became good enough at Blender to go beyond. Learning things separately from one another is always worse than using everything together in projects.

This is a good example of how understanding one art allows for a stronger understanding of other arts. It's the same for many things. Music, science, history, etc. Integration is key.

The thing that impressed me the most was the Strings he animated on the models whenever they got kicked into space. Such a small detail but really sells it as one of those old stop motion cartoons.

@@tirlio I mean, you're allowed to have that opinion, but like, I can't think of any modern stop motion that goes for that look other than LAIKA (who granted are behind most stop motion films these days, because there just aren't a lot of them). I mean most other modern SM productions embrace the handcrafted feel of the medium, just look at Isle of Dogs, the SM scenes of the Little Prince, and My Life as a Zucchini. Besides I would argue that even if the films have a polished look and merge CG with practical effects, you can still tell that it's hand made. It just has this realness to it that's impossible to achieve with CG (unless you're worthikids apparently)

​@@soaringtrident Apparently, everything Worthikids does is actually 3d-modeled CGI in Blender but he uses a wide variety of filters to make it look like claymation/cel-shading/hand animation/etc. But that means a lot of attention to the details of those different kinds of production!

Even better is the fact that this _isn't_ real claymation. It's 3d rendering. _AND THAT MAKES IT EVEN HARDER._ There is an enourmous amount of work going into making it look lower tech than it really is. Making the animation jitter in that unnatural way, getting the textures to look just right, making the image blurred like an old timey lens, all of this takes serious talent

This is what stood out to me as well! So many Japanese content creators out there and yet somehow Westerners seem to almost never actually collaborate to make their Japanese aesthetic content natural. Fantastic to see.

What's even cooler is they got the guys who did the Japanese dub of Big Top Burger.
