This behavior should be a default behavior for service dogs and dogs with reactivity/aggression issues. The demo dog already knows the behavior so the frequency of offering it is much higher than a dog learning it. Train until your dog can do 8-10 rapid looks at you before changing locations, increasing distraction level or asking for duration.
A treat pouch is a useful tool. Use small treats the size of a pea for medium-sized dog and soft treats that can be eaten quickly without crumbling. Real meat (beef heart, liver, chicken, turkey, cheese etc) are highly prized by most dogs. The trick into gradually increase the distraction level for your dog. This is done by carefully choosing the training location for distractions. Increase it too much and you lose your dog.

@edwardrow Uncued. That's the idea behind a default behavior. When the dog doesn't know what else to do, s/he will offer a default. Capturing means 'catching a behavior that is offered'. Think of it as a periodic check-in. The more its reinforced, the more often the dog will offer it, as long as s/he is under threshold and still in thinking mode. I aim for a check in every 20 to 30 seconds when out on a walk.

This is a fabulous behavior to teach ALL dogs as a default when distraction is present--thanks for the helpful video! :)

@eeskin My dogs are always hungry! LOL. Yes, it is a good idea to train before a meal and many hours after one to ensure they are motivated, especially in high distractions. High level treats for most dogs are beef heart, liver, cheese, rollover, hotdogs and other real meat products.

@nerdaterp CC uploaded. had a few problems with the clicks correponding correctly. It's a bit of a tedious job and I get fed up easily. LOL!

@nerdaterp The default eye contact and LAT do have very similar foundations except that for LAT when the dog looks at the thing that triggers it, he defaults back to you. With a general default eye contact, the whole environment is the cue.

The click marks exactly the instant the dog makes eye contact. You can use either the clicker or a sound made with your mouth (such as "Yes!" or a tongue click, but a clicker is more precise for these types of behaviors. It is called 'clicker training' and almost all of my videos shows you how to use it. check out my blog for a list videos and how to start. wwwdotdogvideoindex.blogspotdotcom (replace the dots with periods)

Great demonstration. I shall wait for the CC. Can this be used when your dog gets excited about something to the point where they approach threshold or exceed it?

It's a basic backclip flat harness. I got it at one of the big box pet stores.

Thank you for the video, I saw in your videos that you are clicking (with left hand)... what is the purpose of clicking?

The clicker is a communication tool.

When do you add the look at me command?

@nerdaterp I would be more inclined to teach a "Look at That" cue for things that trigger the dog. Check out supernaturalbc2009 for that video. The key is to stay at enough distance that your dog does not go over excitement threshold. Lots of practice will allow you to decrease distance over time.

The gun shots were a distraction too.
