Couldn't wait to bring this tone to the series... I tried so many times but never really got near enough to make a video on. A tone many people didn't like and maybe I'd be one of them if the songs and melodies weren't so nostalgic. All the capturing tone videos I've done are saved as gear screenshots and able to be downloaded below.

Another banger of a video my goodness. I have the white Marshall dsl40c I hunted for the white one why?? Because of Randy! And I’ve chased his tone ever since. I’ve seen forums of people saying “ Randy wasn’t known for his tone” etc I simply say go listen to it for real and come back to me. He has a chunky bottom almost that has a chugg to it before a chugg was a thing you can pump that Low E all day and his mids are fat full and aggressive. Then his top is so smooth not screechy or whiny but as stated just bright enough. I love Randy’s tone so much I needed this video! Now a need a ten band😂. LONG LIVE RANDY RHOADS! His music will forever stand the test of time and he is cemented as one of the greatest to ever do it. Even if you don’t listen to his music your favorite guitar player does and was inspired by him

Randy's live tone is honestly where it's at. The album tone is just okay in my humble opinion. I had a really fucking difficult time getting as close as possible to his live tone though. It requires a Marshall amp or a close to Marshall amp with 6ca7's...NOT EL34's. He didn't use EL34s. A Les Paul...doesn't really matter if it's Gibson or Epiphone. MXR Distortion Plus....a lot of people swear by vintage models...usually script versions. It doesn't matter honestly. I've tried both lol. An MXR 10 Band EQ. The speaker must be an Altec Lansing 417-8H. That's one of the biggest problems. I paid a lot of money to find a good working one. I ended up going for a Marshall DSL40CR with that Altec Speaker and I changed the tubes to 6ca7s. With all of those components you can get it very very close to his live tone....especially the tone found on his After Hours performance, which I think is the best representation of his live sound without the Chorus. That's one of the issues with Rhoads. Every single live show he played besides After Hours has this astonishingly blaring Chorus that is always on. They actually mixed that sound out of the Tribute album and even the 40th Anniversary Blizzard/Diary live discs. It is still present in Tribute but it's been muted a bit. Even with all of those components, I still had an enormous amount of trouble figuring out his sound. Until I realized that the gain he had on his amps was very very minimal. All of his gain comes from the Distortion Plus and 10 band. He bumped the mid frequencies 250k-500k quite a bit. 1k is bumped up but not much. Lastly the gain and volume on the Distortion Plus are maxed but on the amp I used Green OD Channel and the gain is turned to around 1-2 or 8 o clock. Almost no gain on the amp. It's really bizarre honestly....he really found this niche tone that is incredibly hard to achieve in modern times. You'd think with Technology that has become so advanced that it would be easy. It just isn't. Oh and his wah was at the end of the chain. His signal went from the guitar to a volume pedal. After that you can really play around but the Wah must be at the end and the Distortion plus is before the EQ pedal. So it's Volume pedal>Dist+>10-band>Wah. You can fit the Chorus and Flanger in there anywhere you want as long as it's after the Volume and before the Wah. I have my Chorus before the Dist Plus. I would say the sound I got is about 98% there with After hours performance as a guide. The only way to get 100% is all the same gear. I couldn't afford a Marshall 1959 and those are entirely too loud lol. The DSL series from Marshall are honestly astonishingly great and you can get a lot out of those anyway. Last thing I will say is good luck getting that live tone with modern Speakers. I tried 6 different Celestions and all failed miserably. You have to have a speaker that is clean and bright. Anything from 100 watt speakers onward usually are very clean. The one that got somewhat close was a Celestion G12T-75 but even that was a failure in my opinion. The closest modern speaker that you could probably use is one of those Electro voice speakers but I'm skeptical of those. Love your videos man and keep em going 🤘

Nice explanation, tons of details from you I see. I didn't know Randy used a Plexi, but for sure he was famous for double tracking certain sections, like solos and licks. His tone reeked definitely of the Marshall "buzz", but somehow was heavier than the one you achieved. Hard to believe he did it all with so little gain and with a Plexi. 😁
@jfo3000
@jfo3000 7 месяцев назад
Randy used an MXR Distortion +, and MXR 10 band too. Those will allow a lot of extra whatever you need. Randy actually called the Dst+ a "fuzz". It gets into fuzz territory.
@yearginclarke
@yearginclarke 2 месяца назад
I believe the way plexis are voiced with their naturally aggressive midrange/treble response, is why it sounds pretty heavy. Add a Distortion+ and the EQ pedal and that's enough to really get things cooking with a plexi. I've tried the same thing with other amps that are voiced differently and it doesn't sound quite like it does with a plexi style amp, or just a Marshall in general.

Sounds really close. I can't describe accurately how this tone is different, other than generic words that come to mind. Which are "tinny" and "manufactured". Not that it's bad. It sounds really good and I'd be very happy with that set up for a cover. Randy's tone can never be copied exactly. And especially his Blizzard tone. That was magic. It was as if his guitar tone was a part of his body and soul, like it was breathing.

Randy doubled rather poorly his guitar tracks. Both tracks wet with reverb. That's part of the magic I suppose. But this is close enough to Tribute, perhaps a little more bass IMO.

@@Gma7788 What else do "I need"? One thing that I'm quite sure that "I need" is to explain to you that I'm a musician of 36 years to start with. And that I most likely had more knowledge of musical instruments on the day you were conceived than you'll ever have the ability to learn in your lifetime. Now there are indeed "brands" owned by people who are cashing in on the legacy of a 25 year old prodigy. Randy showed up for his audition with Ozzy carrying a Fender Champ and his guitar (which is also a "brand" after the fact) and his tone, according to R. Sarzo was exactly the same as what you'd hear from the Marshal stacks that adorned the stages during their tours. And as for you and your snarky (cringe worthy) remarks that were so zealously misplaced, first off... By "tinny and manufactured" I was referring to the tone that I'd just heard. Which was a valiant effort, but falling short of the mark. Just as any other product or "brand" using Randy's name or likeness will always inevitably do. For at the end of the day those "brands" are nothing more than cash grabs. I will repeat and confidently stand behind my original statement, that Randy's tone can be copied but never duplicated. A signature tone can NEVER be packaged and sold so that some random guitar player sitting in his or her room in their pajamas can sound exactly like the prodigy that was Randy Rhodes. They can come close but that's about it. Even with his personal amp, and his personal Guitar they still couldn't get it to sound like it did when it was in Randy's hands. And you, can just go pound sand kid. Here, I pulled you out a chair .. 🪑

@@luzbiensuave He explained how he doubled and even triple tracked several of the songs that they recorded for Blizzard and Diary. He said in the interview that he was never %100 satisfied with any of the recording but the label and producers were basically demanding songs so they could get the albums on the shelves. "Haha so what can you do?" He added. I can't quote much more from the interview since it's been 30 years since I've read it 😂 I want to say it was Hit Parader, but it's been so long ago that it could have just as easily been Karaanng, Or Guitar Magazine. Lol these kids today think they can buy a guitar tone, download it on their laptops then duplicate that same magic. Like this other clown getting all butthurt at any suggestions that he cannot do such a thing. Lol you can sound like someone TRYING to sound like Randy Rhodes. That's as close as anyone else can ever get. Tell one of them that and watch them throw a tantrum like a toddler at target 🎯 with their NaNa. 🤣

@@lilmike2710 Tone is in the fingers as some people say. There's a video of Satriani playing an off-brand guitar and still sounds like Satriani. There's also Dimebag Darrell footage playing someone's Randy Rhoads Jackson guitar and still sounds like Dime. But yeah, Randy triple tracked rythms and double tracked solos (I assume, since Mr Crowley and Crazy Train have some moments when the takes are different and hence why one cannot nail the studio versions. The Art of Guitar has a video about it)

@@luzbiensuave I got to hear a guitar track only version of Mr. Crowley just today. Here on YT in fact. Without bass keyboards, vocals and drums. Just Randy's playing isolated. Very interesting indeed. Check it out if you haven't already.

You sound like Randy, but less scratchy. I think it's an improvement.
