On our way back to Florida, shortly after leaving Colorado we stopped for one night in Capulin New Mexico so we could visit and experience the Capulin Volcano National Monument. This is a dormant volcano that you can hike down inside and also all the way around the rim of the cinder cone. It offers breathtaking views! Truly a hidden gem of a park and so much to see and learn at this wonderful park.

I was thrilled that you two were able to visit Capulin Volcano! When I was a geology student back in the mid 1960's, we visited Capulin and were astounded that one could actually go down in the crater. There were no paved roads and trails, only a gravel roads and paths. It was in the spring; hence no vegetation cover to speak of yet. Once on the rim, we noticed that there had been a snowfall a day or two before and all "trenches" in the ripples were filled with the snow and the darker lava ridges had melted off making for a spectacular exposure of all the ripples that looked like zebra stripes. Capulin is a must see for anyone travelling in the area!

We went to Capulin Volcano on our trip back from Colorado Springs from Texas. Did not know anything about Capulin we just passed it on the way up from Texas and said that's interesting we will stop on the way back home. We had such a good time there. Very unique place and beautiful remoteness to it. The teenage kids loved the park. Hike it pretty was pretty tough for a bunch of flat land Texans, but we would love to do it again. Enjoyed your video.

This is so awesome. I live in New Mexico and Capulin just barely scratches the surface of the state's volcanism. Best video you Folks have done on Capulin I've seen. Thanks for the wonderful video! Did you know at 22:05 you filmed a small stratovolcano named Sierra Grande? Your views of the surrounding volcanic cones was great. Have a wonderful trip and may you make it back home to the great fishing state of Florida safe and sound!

I hope you two get a chance to visit the Pacific Northwest some day. You will love Lassen Volcanic National Park. (It’s been windy and rainy in Quartzite the last few days so I’ve been binge watching your channel. Such a cheery duo.) ❤️. Go, CHIEFS! ❤️💛❤️💛

Boy that was quite the ride on the roof and the best view in 4k. Lots of good scenery. The dormant volcanos and cinder cones litter the west coast down into California. You’ll see them if you zoom in on google maps. I thought I overheard someone talking about a super volcano in or near California also. So much to see and experience. Thanks again for the ride along with you. Looking forward to more of them.

Several years ago my wife and I visited Capulin and hiked up the rim trail and we saw a military plane flying around near the crater and it was flying below us. Of course it wasn't just for us but still a interesting aerial show all the same.

I’ve been looking forward to this video since you were in my part of the country on this leg of the trip. We pass by Capulin on our way to our cabin in Red River, NM several times a year and really enjoy a stopover to drive to the top. A fun fact: The big shield volcano off in the distance as you are driving up, at the summit that is the highest elevation in the US east of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain is called Sierra Grande.

This was a truly incredible video. I was just saying to my spouse that I never considered so much volcanic activity in what we’d consider one of the plains state. Unreal, and such good video quality. Once again, it’s a year when I can’t quite yet get away, so I am living vacation vicariously :). Thank you for this channel!

The guy who built the road to the top used a mule drawn scraper. You'll be glad to know that the State of New Mexico bought the mule and scraper and now use it to clear snow from the highways between Raton and Des Moines, NM.

We were there in July 2013. We got there in the afternoon and there were clouds coming in. We made it to that covered area before the cloud burst started. We had our cameras and binoculars. There were lot of mule deer there. We watched a deer that was away from the others. The ranger was there and she said let me look. She radioed other ranger. What we were seeing was a mule deer taking her newborn calf up the hillside on the east side. They had seen the mother laying in that area at noon. They had closed the rim due to the storm clouds. We will have to go back. So glad you got to stop there.

I have a 100% volcanic/sysmic activity after I visit a location with Dormant Volcanos … always minor stuff within a week of my departure …but notable events … the power of coincidental observation … but I love basaltic geology!
@desertsoldier41
@desertsoldier41 Год назад
Its extinct not dormant. Its a mongenic cinder cone which means it can only erupt once. Some day a new cone will form further down the volcanic field.
