Car alternator generator testing by clamp meter. How to check dynamo current ampere service repair of alternator. Alternator is the main part of a car. Alternator produces electrical power for the car system and alternator charges car battery when battery is used for starting in self starter in a car. Alternator have stater winding, armature winding or rotor. alternator have slip rings carbon brushes and carbon brush holder. alternator have two bearings installed. Alternator have a three phase bridge rectifier and a voltage current regulator in it. The purpose of the alternator is to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. meaning to say the alternator shaft is run by engine power and the engine rotating power is converter into three phase electricity by alternator. Then the three phase electrical power is converted into DC electrical power and fed to the car electrical system to run the accessories and to charge the battery. People do think that Battery is powering up everything their car like self starter, wind shield motor, radio, climate control and the rest of the things but in reality the alternator is that who powers up every thing even charges the batter too. The battery is just used to start up the car from stand still and power up accessories when the engine is stopped. The alternator is the main part of the car electrical system and car charging system. so it is important to understand the function and working of a car alternator. Alternator is bolted to the car engine. Alternator runs through belt with engine running. Pulley is the first rotating part of alternator. Serpentine belt runs the alternator through this pulley. Pulley is further connected to the rotor. Rotor contains field winding. Field winding provides rotating magnetic field which is in the form of north and south magnet poles. Rotor field poles have triangle shaped fingers. The field winding in alternator produces an electromagnet. Field current is supplied to the alternator through carbon brushes from regulator. The field current decides the battery charging rate and provides voltage regulation. car alternators are normally 3 phase machines. The produced 3 phase power is converter to DC power through a rectifier installed inside an alternator. As the car electrical system is usually 12V DC system, hence the system requires 12V DC power to be fed by alternator. But the alternator regulator is designed to feed the system with 13.8V to 14V. The reason for such increase in the alternator produce voltage is to make the alternator power suitable for charging the vehicle battery. The car alternator is able to produce much more voltage and much more current on increased engine speeds. To control such increment in voltage and current, voltage current regulator is used to maintain the system voltage to the specified 13.8V all the time and also to control the current produced within a safe alternator construction limits.
