I went winter solo car camping in my dodge grand caravan which I turned into a campervan. It got very cold but I stayed pretty warm with my electric blanket. I take my minivan camper camping all the time, but tried some new things in this video. A lot of fresh snow on the ground, but thankfully it was plowed.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. (1 John 4:7-8)

Son of a furnace man here; I watch you set up your side tent and anchor the bottoms down with snow, but you leave the gap under the van open. I keep wanting to say, "hey, close that down there, you will save some heat".😀

In the past I had a water bed they are nice cause you can control the temp based on the current season like summer OR Winter. I remember being put on muscle relaxers when I had a water bed tell you what. Being on muscle relaxers and sleeping on a water bed it's pure heaven it's like your floating on clouds. Using a heating pad for your bed OR even a heating blanket as one is nice as well during winter. Turn it on like 10 mins before getting in bed you will never climb in a cold bed ever again.

The video was great including the wide angle clip. Your portable cabin is getting cooler every time. That burner isn’t really worth it if you think about it. The Coleman butane one seems more efficient to me. Of course maybe it was too cold for the butane to work. The heated blanket is nice I’m sure. I have one but it drains my Jackery pretty fast so I have never used it. 0 degree sleeping bag works fine for me. But I haven’t gone out in temps lower than 35 degrees think. Getting a lot of ideas from your videos. Light strings are great and don’t use much power.

Your only talking about the output side of that equation. While 1KW of electricity can be converted to 1kw of heat energy, you have to consider the power density. He's got a 80lb battery pack that holds around 2kw, which is 2kw of heat energy. a single 4 oz isobutane canister which weighs a few oz has more energy than that. The video you reference, while a good video, is also under the assumption that accessibility to either energy source is not limited. Just because you can use your cell phone energy to boil a cup of water doesn't mean you should, especially if then you will have no energy for your cell phone.

what you need is multi fuel campng stove and jet boil pot as your water boiling set up, you can use propane from your propane tank as well as gas from car to run it, jet boil jug has fins on the base which absorbs heat from the flame and boils water really fast, as you are already using a tent to as kitchnette, you dont have to worry about carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide build up in your sleeping area. that will help you save batteries.

Now I only accept ones that are larger and better than my previous one because my goal is to go all electric eventually. They definitely are expensive, which is why it’s best to just get a smaller more affordable one at first and as you save up money sell that one and upgrade to something larger. The first one I bought was the Bluetti EB55 which isn’t very large but I was able to runs all my lights, charge my phone, drones and all that no issue. The really large ones aren’t really needed, they are more of a luxury for like making coffee, toaster, heated blankets, portable ac and so on. Propane can take care of a lot of things.

You might want to check that location finder info before you trust it. If that doesn’t have a cellular or GPS location that transmits and receives, it’s using the app on YOUR phone to determine its location. I’d test it by leaving it someplace safe, driving away (app off) and see of it can find its location from a mile+ away. If it can’t find/see it consider attaching a gps or AirTag to help with its recovery if needed. 😊

@TolbersCamping
@TolbersCamping Год назад
Yeah as long as you have sunlight and a solar panel you have unlimited power within the range you are able to recharge. Bigger solar panel the better. My head didn’t get very cold because I just lifted the blanket up high and the heat under kept me warm.

I have A LOT more power than you do, and let me assure you that cooking electrically is NOT a good solution unless you can recharge reliably (certain access to solar and/or AC) every day. Better option is to get a splitter for your gas line and then you can cook/heat with the one large tank. I cook, heat, and run a tankless hot water heater (when you need a shower in the woods) and a 20# tank will last for weeks unless you're heating 24/7. Once you remove the huge resistive loads (hot plate, waffle iron, water kettle, hair dryer, curling iron), your battery will last much, much longer. I try to run as many devices directly off DC as possible because the conversion losses from the inverter can be substantial. I've got a 24v/600ah system with 800w of rigid solar panels. My mobile fridge and lights, fans, TV and Starlink all run from direct DC and can run 24/7. I rarely drop below 80%. In the summer I actually can cool my 10x20 tent with an LG high efficiency 5Kbtu window AC unit feeding through the pet access door of the tent. (sounds excessive until you camp in south Georgia during August when daytime temps can top 100F with 90% humidity) I only use my inverter to charge my laptop or power the AC unit. In the summer running the AC 10-12hrs a day I don't usually go below 50%. But I still wouldn't cook with electricity. I want to be fully sustainable long term and under any reasonable weather conditions (sustained rain/fog/snow etc) for several days. My only limitation is in the quantity of food I can take with me. I'm kind of like an over landing nuclear submarine.

The difference for me is I only use my van to camp in and not live in so the most I would do is a couple days at a time. You have an awesome setup though and hope to get something like some day. Thanks for watching!

Matt, I wish I had something like that to camp in, it's so comfy and safer than a tent. Having your vehicle is an easy escape in a scary situation. You're doing a great job with all you're doing. I really like the moon shade canopy too. God bless! Love the cup your wife made for you too. I also like the wide angle lens! 😊👍

You should try an induction burner. They use way less power. True you need to be sure cookware is induction compatible though.

Enjoyed the video and the lens did a good job on the wide angle with some distortion. Thank you for showing more cooking and heating options, but I think I will stick to gas for cooking. My small power bank definitely would not stand up to the load. Safe travels and happy camping!
@TolbersCamping
@TolbersCamping Год назад
Thanks David and I agree the wide lens definitely looked useable just not as clear in lower light situations. Gas cooking is still definitely more doable for majority of people, technology is definitely coming along way though and shouldn’t be to long before it’s a great option at a reasonable price.

Brother, you’re using a fortune in juice to run that fancy e blanket off your inverter. I think you should be able to find another DC out so you can run your fridge AND your blanket off DC (probably one of the cannon plugs) and a short out that will provide 2 DC outs ……then, buy the cheapest e blankets that run on DC from Amazon or Wally World ……About 4 years ago I bought 2 for $25.00. Still using the 1st one, spare still in the sack. I do not yet have my build complete enough to get a small fridge inside so I only need the one DC out. Man, I maybe use 10% for ALL NIGHT out of an old Jackery 500 (watt hours) ………so, 50 maybe 60 watt hours per 10 hour night(!)……that, a cracked window and a hi-tech butane camp stove with aluminum foil/coat hanger heat shield so I don’t burn the joint down, I fire it up as the temp drops enough to awaken me….in 5 or 6 minutes it’s toasty again, cut it off, readjust my $12.50 e blanket (hard wired remote…..not real fancy) and go back to sleep. Not near as nice as yours but sheeeeese, that one is eating you alive on power bills! GBU Brother!
@TolbersCamping
@TolbersCamping Год назад
Yeah it used way to much power to be doable long term, but that’s why I tested it all to get a baseline for improvement. I do have a much more energy efficient cooking setup that you will see soon, but will have to look into a dc power electric blanket. Thanks for watching bro!

if i can. get rid of the hot plate that thing wastes too much power get an induction burner instead. yellow string lights would bring an extra hominess to the van
@TolbersCamping
@TolbersCamping Год назад
Yeah like I said in the video I figure an induction stove would be more efficient, but figured why not try both so I can see the difference. The string lights do change to yellow, maybe I’ll do that one of these times. Thanks for watching!

@TolbersCamping

Probably but food may freeze after a bit. The good thing is the fridge use very little power during the winter because the compressor doesn’t need to run very often as it’s cooler in the van than in the summer.
