They actually did this just before Twickenham replaced the entire pitch with a new natural/synthetic hybrid surface, hence they were allowed to completely destroy all the grass.

Andre Gon For big games I don't think it would be a problem because sponsors would pay for them. I'm talking about a middle class guy trying to train for it in order to qualify. Most people can't spend $8-10k for a new car for every practice game or $100-2000 for a repair each game.
