So here is the requested / updated video where the broken item actually gets replaced. Here's what happened:
A few years back I was going to leave with my sons car and the shifter was stuck in park. After a short google I took the shifter apart just to find a broken plastic piece inside of it. I removed it and voila, everything worked. The problem, the safety feature that won't let you shift into gear when not stepping on the brake pedal is now disabled. The car is being driven by my son and he is very aware of what is going on here. I've gotten some flack from some viewers as the repair was not done correctly. Some mechanics actually have gotten customers showing them my video to replicate it for cheap. PEOPLE!!! You cannot do that. A repair shop may actually get in trouble if you hurt someone. So, after a professional reached out to me and pointed me in the right direction for the needed part, here is the updated video.
Here is the link to the old video:

200.00 shifter on eBay got me in the road. I ordered the metal replacement part. Reassembled the old shifter. Now I have a back up shifter if I ever need it. Part replacing the old plastic part that broke cost me 11.00 on eBay. Thanks for for your video. Car was on the road with the quick hammer fix and now safely in the Road. 😊

I think that as the part is available at reasonable price (not $1,200) then it should be properly fixed because even if it not a safety issue for you and the way you use the car, what if you lend your car to someone or sell it and forget to advise the user or new owner, you would be responsible (at least morally) if anything happened down the road. I really admire you for being so positive and doing this follow up video. Your original video was definitely fine for "getting you out of trouble" but it did leave an "elephant in the room", which you have now addressed. I really appreciate both your videos on this very common and potentially expensive failure of a cheap and nasty component. Thank you very much indeed.

Thanks for your kind words. Yes it’s for everyone to gauge on their own. We will not sell this car. If my son wants to get rid of it, I’ll take it back of his hands. The only way for us to get rid of it would be a junk yard. That beings said, if I was going to flip these, you are right, we have a moral responsibility to fix it properly. Either way, we made 2 videos. I would do that for any other repair we have done. After all, I’m not a mechanic. I make mistakes. I just document how I did, but I will admit to it if I did and try to make it right.

Yours is the only video explaining how to fix a problem that many people have and Mercedes won't ever explain to you even though you have spent there thousands of dollars (in my case euros) going there. At Mercedes they replace the whole thing and just the part in europe they asked me for 1200 euros plus VAT plus their work to assemble it. So thank you for your patience, the much better explaining video and for the updates.

Thank you. Yes I got a lot of flack for just removing the part and not putting it back in. To be honest, if it was for me, I'd still be just removing it, but if you have inspections, which we do not have in Florida, putting one back in is important. I just think that the quality of the link is not machined very well.

The aluminum piece unfortunately fails just like the plastic. I’m a 3rd owner of an S430 and apparently at some point, a previous mechanic did this fix and now the aluminum actually got worn at one point to cause my car to get stuck in park. Nice video regardless though, it helped me do this step by step myself!

That’s discouraging if the aluminum piece breaks as well. Even tho we added it with this video, originally we had just removed it and left it without one.

The second video was in response to some “not so nice” comments from a veteran mechanic. So after some words I did it the “correct” way. Even tho, we all know our risks as home mechanics. But apparently people went to shops showing my video how to do it for cheap which is a whole other problem on it’s own. I’m just not on the winning end here. I’m just showing my journey. And hope people get encouraged, or even better yet, reduce the fear to attempt things themself. Thanks for watching!!!

Thanks for doing it right! And following up. Note: the shifter rod connector to the shifter housing had a bushing there with the clip! Noticed you didn’t have the bushing just the clip, it works but makes for a sloppy shift rod and has play, install the bushing (can be done from under the car now) and you’ll notice precise shifter movement and feel, no play at all.

It started from MB design flaw that they made it in plastic the first place. MB should make it in metal instead of plastic. This poor design from MB should be a recall. Don't you think?
@Turbo_Snail
@Turbo_Snail 3 года назад
Hm, that’s a tough one. If that part was failing in thousands of cars within the first let’s say 5 years, absolutely. The thing is, these cars are 15-20 years old. Things will break after that long. If that part was made from metal, it would have worn out another part inside the shifter.

Yup. I’m 10 minutes down the road. Maybe we’ll meet there one of these days. I had no idea they had a recall for that. You are right. The shifter should have had a recall as well. I get tons of views this time of year as people start driving these old tanks again and that little plastic piece is breaking. We’re almost at 155k miles. I’ll have my son do a service at the dealer to be part of that experience and Mercedes has a plaque for the grill for crossing 250k kilometers.

@Turbo_Snail
@Turbo_Snail 19 дней назад
Connect it back to power. When you step on the brake, the solenoid should engage. I never seen a solenoid break. You probably have a cracked plastic lever which looks good but when you apply the brake it bends at the crack. Try again, the solution is in there. I promise. Either way, removing the plastic will get you to shift again.

And the shop that charged me around $1200 for a new shifter said that the old one was a MB controlled part and had to be turned in. That foiled my plans to replace that cheap part and have a spare shifter. New one already sticks sometimes but it has a 3 year warranty.

Can i ask, what do you think causes the problem in the first place? Would it be people shifting fast or hard when they shift? Will that break the little plastic part? My 2006 S350 shifter was smooth. I went to a local shop to do oil change. When i got car back, shifter stuck same day and ever since. Will unstick if i shut car off and then start the car. Somehow, i feel the mechanic shifted my car fast and rough and caused the problem. Any thoughts?
@Turbo_Snail
@Turbo_Snail Год назад
It’s just material weakness. Could happen anywhere anytime. It’s actually a shifter release. You can bang the shifter all you want and it wouldn’t matter. It’s a plastic part that over time just fails. We removed ours, did another video on how to put it back in because a mechanic complained. The new part is aluminum. If the factory part would have been aluminum rather than plastic, this would have not failed. Probably something more expensive down the line. That being said, I don’t think it’s fair to blame whoever broke it. It would have broken regardless. When you look at the video, mine was just cracked. I actually broke it completely to easier remove it.

I'd like to move it from that spot back to the house. The hitting the shifter with a hammer trick did not work for me. Any advice? TIA!
@Turbo_Snail
@Turbo_Snail Год назад
If you can't shift, the little plastic thing inside is broken. If your brake lights are on, you should be able to shift unless again, the plastic piece is broken. To get the car moving, I would think if you do what I did in the first video it will get you at least moving. Now, the brake light switch, if I remember right, is on the brake pedal on that car. That's a different issue. But I really haven't heard of it being always on. I've heard of it not coming on at all which may impact the shifter because it doesn't actuate. Research the brake switch first. The only advice I have is if you can't move it at all, get it towed. I have a AAA membership as I have a couple project cars and it's worth the few $$ I pay. You should be able to fix the shifter with just some basic tools even on the side of the road. Check out the Mercedes Benz Forum at www.MBWorld.org, there is tons more info available there. I hope you get it working again.

Yes. Look at both my videos. If the pin is out however, you’ll be able to shift out of park without applying the brake. That’s the brake safety lockout.

@@Turbo_Snail Sorry to bother again, my confusion on this pin is that on my car there is nothing attached to it outside the casing. There isn’t anything outside the casing. If someone already removed the lever inside, you wouldn’t have a shifting problem. Look at both my videos on that. Maybe it’ll give you a different angle. @@Turbo_Snail I have confused you, sorry, I understand the interlock lever and have purchased an aluminum replacement. I am referring to that simple pin that protrudes through the front of the casing and is directly above the front mounting bolt and in fact is in the way to move assembly. @Turbo_Snail

Hm. I’m not sure what you mean. I remember the pin was hard to place through the lever, if that’s what you’re talking about. Worst case, just leave the lever out completely. You’ll get your car drivable again. I’m sorry I can’t be of any help here.

Agreed. If you have half a brain you shouldn’t have any issues. 70% of safety features are results from one idiot doing something no one else would do and laws are put in place to fix that for everyone else. Look at lane assist and blind spot monitoring. Great features for most people. It’s because we drink and eat and shave and smoke while driving. In essence remove the cup holders, put a manual back in the car and focus on driving. Thanks for your comment and for watching. Also check out my first video. Hi, thank you for the video. I have a similar problem, I guess.. The lever is not completely blocked but after few hits on the gear lever itself and enliving it by moving sideways (a method from Internet), you can change the gear with some significant resistance when pulling the lever, or without hitting it, but only by pulling strongly (with even greater resistance) and when it's done you can hear a strong single thumb from gearbox or drive shaft. Have you had similar encounters when trying to pass the resistance point? Would your fixing idea help here as well? Many thanks
@Turbo_Snail
@Turbo_Snail 2 года назад
Yeah, same problem as everyone else. There is a little pin that moves the plastic lever when you step on the brake. It's a safety feature. I removed it in my first video and it works. Then in this updated video I show how I installed a metal one. Still works great. Watch both videos so you get a better idea on what I've done. I have different angles on both videos. It's a tight space and hard to show what I was doing but it was fairly simple in hindsight. I hope it helps. I heard Mercedes charges now US$1200-1600 for a replacement. Also, to help you out read the comments and the description. Good luck!

@@Turbo_Snail Many thanks, Daniel. Yes, will watch thoroughly again. No. If you hear the click. The actuator actually works and properly tries to push that plastic lever which is broken. Once you take it apart (not sure how well you can see it in the videos) you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Thank you for getting back to me on this. I have one more question... I actually got that wrong, when the new (eBay) part was put in, it did not go into drive, but the old one did. Could this still be a transmission problem? I also had some codes that I got but don't really understand. Something about watchdog function has detected an internal hardware fault and an implausible wheel speed signal was received. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks
@Turbo_Snail
@Turbo_Snail 3 года назад
🤔 maybe that part was faulty or the linkage wasn’t attached. Implausible wheel speed probably refers to the speed sensor. Those are just guesses. It’s hard to diagnose from afar. The watchdog function I believe is the distronic system. Have you tried disconnecting the batter for 30 minutes. Some systems reset them selves. However I doubt it will fix the shifting issue. I hope you’ll figure it out. I’m curious now.
@loral.charles4009
@loral.charles4009 3 года назад
That's the codes I got before I changed out the new part. I did disconnect the battery because I bought a new one. Maybe I didn't leave it disconnected long enough... Idk? It's been sitting in garage for about 2 months. It's weird though, it was perfectly fine until it was backed out of garage, then when trying to park back in garage, it didn't move forward 😭. When I get it figured out, I'll let you know...Thank you 🙏 again for replying back! Your videos are great by the way! 👍😊
