Agreed, I've been subbed to about 5 different EV channels for about last 3 or 4 years, and I only now (after watching Cooley explain it) understand the differences between J1772, CCS, and Chademo.

I believe CCS has officially been endorsed as DC fast charging standard in the European Union last year. And Tesla Model 3s bound for Europe all come with a CCS connector.

Tesla not allowing model 3 circuitry to fast charge at public charging location in order to bring revenue to supercharger? That is such an Apple move without the revenue to back it up.

Fast charger companies in Europe says is that Tesla haven't used the exact standard for the handshake communication in the Model 3. Most likely due to their own supercharger network is just plug and play. So if they will change this, they'll have to reprogram every supercharger to update to this new handshake. Shouldn't take long, but I'm sure it will change!

Nonsense, Tesla designed and installed these chargers long before others did. So they are the ones that decided on another charger-plug.

The Tesla connector exists because the J1772 standard wasn't ready when Tesla needed to prepare for production. They made a decision and have stuck with it. Definitely more elegant than the CCS system.

Ugh it feels like the days before ODBII and everyone having their own damn port, really hope the government or some regulitory body come in and demand a standardized charge port for all cars.

​@@jeremycastro8223 You see the thing about free market is they aren't beholden to the people but share-holders and the bottom line and will always try and take the avenue the yields the greatest profit consequences be damned. You wouldn't have clean drinking water, breathable air in the vast majority of major cities or any form of consumer protection. And there would be many times more monopolies then there are today. We need government regulation to keep companies honest. Do I think the government should be giving out bail-outs? No . But it's important to realize these companies won't act a lot of the time without over-sight.

@@bikesqump Hah it could be named the Chargematic 2000 and I'd be okay with it so long as we only had a single port to use and didn't need to carry around adapters. It should be like USB, a single port for pretty much everything.

Level 2 charging is not up to 90kW. That would be 240v at 375amps. It is typically 240v up to 80amps which is around 19kW. Most homes with a 200amp main panel can accommodate this but the wires to carry that much current are very expensive. In Europe they refer to these as 22kW chargers, but they are usually 3 phase power. In the US we use single (split?) phase 240v.

IKR. 90KW what??? 22KW is max for Tesla S or X with dual internal chargers. Everything else is 7.2KW or less right now.

Correct me, if i wrong, but Mode 2 in both EU and US is 1-phase AC ~230V*32A current - 7.2kW with loses. Pretty decent. Mode 3 in EU is 3-phase AC ~400V*60A - 22kW, in US - idk, Type1 connector doesn't allow DC, and US grid system rarely provide 3-phase. Mode 4 is supercharging, as described in video.

@@Volodimar in the US, level 1 is 120 volts 12 amps single phase. Level two is 240 volts up to 40 amps or so, depends on the vehicle, single phase. Level 3 is DC fast-charging.

Completely agree. When he said level 2 goes up to 90 kW I was like "uhh what?". CHADdeMO in the US goes up to 50kW which is considered level 3.

I'm still fricken confused. EVs gonna need to STANDARDIZED their plugs and charge speeds. Prefer the fastest charge. How long does it take to fill a 25 gallon gas tank? That should be the standard time it takes to FULLY charge all EVs. Except Semis. They need 300 gallons of diesel fuel. So how long does it take to fill those semis should be how long it takes to charge those EV Semis. Faster would be better. Time us money. Getting stuck in traffic sucks a lot if time.

As a PHEV driver who knows all this, great video. Almost everyone who asks me about my car or EVs have just about no clue what's going on and it all seems very confusing to them, though it's starting to change. I think we're already past the point where battery swapping makes any sense (if it ever did). And inductive charging isn't that exciting to me because of both snow/ice/salt and that you have to park in a specific place more so than you do to plug in. Something I would say about L1 chargers is they only make sense to me on mass in public transport parking lots, where a car would be plugged in for 8 hours while people were at work gaining about 50km of range. That being said, when 350+km of range becomes normal even that use case falls off, but it would work for a generation of used first gen EVs.

Instead of unreliable battery swapping, my solution to the battery charging time dilemma is refillable primary electrolytes. That's similar to hydrogen fuel cells, but producing hydrogen is energy inefficient and fuel cells cost too much. They already exist in some commercial applications and are known as flow batteries.

240 volt AC charging relies on two hot leads, not 1 hot and one neutral, (120 volt service).

Great info. All this variety of chargers has to be unified at sone point. Geez, what a confusing mess. If I go to the regular gas station I don't have to worry about if the nossle will fit (Diesel) being the exception.

The government needs to pass laws governing the type of charge port and cable the same for ALL EV vehicles. They did this with gas and diesel vehicles filler nozzles so they need to do the same here also.

Perhaps integrate the data standard into an OBD III or OBD-E. Then it's just a matter of physical adapters for where the pins sit in the socket, until a dominant plug takes over.

Mennekes Type 2 had it all - up to 3 phase, DC fast and data. Most of them come with 2 blank pins and can be used just for level 1 AC.

Not sure why everyone is so quick to dismiss 110v charging right of the bat. My wife has been using it for over a year with no problems. Provides 5 miles an hour of charging or about 50 miles after 10 hours which is what she and a lot of Americans drive most days.

Agree as well. I've had my Focus Electric for more than two years using L1 at home. Even when I upgrade to a longer range car in a few years, I see little need for L2 because if I really need a full battery fast, I'm going to drive down the street to the L3 fast charger.

@@johnrielley7756 AC voltage varies. It's ok if it goes down to 110v because that's the lower limit on AC devices. My Lv 1 charger works on 110v (my grandma house) and 118v (my house)

Yep, it varies from -120V to +120V, 60 times a second ; ) The power companies established the 120V standard back in the 1930s as part of the Rural Electrification Act. You don't have 110V outlets, you have 120V outlets. If your grandma has 110V on her outlet, there's something wrong.@@AntonioCunningham

In my experience, the Tesla Model 3 can charge at Chargepoint chargers with J1772 connectors (via Tesla J1772 adaptor) no problem.

Ok what about flow batteries? Systems where you stop at a retrofitted gas station, drain the low to dead battery acid, and refill with fully charged acid in near similar fuel filling time for ICE's? This converts EV's into a liquid refueling system vs traditional slow plugging methodology to save time.

INCORRECT. Level 1 is only available where 120V is available (US). Maximum power for Level1 is and will be 120x13=1,5kW. Maximum real world power for Level 2 is 22kW. Doable in EU with 3-phase 32A connection. Even if more is available, there are hardly any vehicles that accept more (Zoe is an exception).

Widespread Level 2 in US is 10kW, while 16kW is also doable on Tesla. Most cars can do 7kW, that includes basic Model 3. 7kW is actually what everybody wants as a MAXIMUM. 32A amps on 240V. That includes whole world, not just US.

If J1772 only provides level 1 AC charging, then adding a Tesla adapter to the J1772 will only allow for level 1 charging, right? Did I miss something? That didn’t look like a CCS charger to me

J1772 is the name of the plug and it works for Level 1 and Level 2. It cones down to the actual voltage supplied by the charger.

Tesla sells an adapter for CHaDMo to Tesla. I think the experts that he talked to were referring to the CHaDMo adapter but didn’t make it sufficiently clear.

I hope one day there will be a standard, additionally that all you have to do is connect your car to the EVSE unit, it charges and then charges your debit card accordingly!

That would mean 'working with' whatever number of charging providers are out there. Unless, you leave it to a semi-state service like what Ireland has.

Aside from the Tesla network it is fairly standard. The CHADEMO connector is on the way out in the U.S. as most manufacturers are siding with the J1772 / CCS standard. With the J1772 / CCS connector you can charge at Level 1 / 2 / and 3 (DC FAST if equipped in the car). But I agree, all PAID charging should be standardized though one app and / or payment method.

You forgot to mention that Tesla is part of the CCS universal charging consortium but then at the last minute decided to come up with their own “standard” so thank them for a lot of this confusion to newbies! Hopefully CCS will be king in the USA soon and maybe Nissan drops Chademo!

Battery swapping might work for a fleet of cars that were available for short term hire. Say in big cities where you hire a car for a single journey and then leave it for someone else to use. I would not buy a car with a swappable battery. I'd rather just charge it at home or via super charger.

What is the Kwh rating of EVs ? Can a level 2 (90Kw) can charge a say Nissan leaf which has 40KWh battery in half and hour?? Mobile battery is rated in mAh. What is the difference between mAh and Kwh ? is it same or just multiplied by volts?? Cooley pls explain?

I don't know where Mr. Cooley gets that 90kW maximum for Level 2 charging, since most level THREE charging stations can only deliver 40 or 50kW. 90kW from 240V would mean about 380 amperes in the charging cable. The cable in my garage gets pretty warm just delivering 28A into my LEAF. But the battery capacities for EVs are generally in the 10 to 100kWh range. The initial LEAF was about 24kWh, current models offer 30, 40 (and soon 60) kWh, the Mitsu iMiev was 16kWh, the Honda Fit EV was 20kWh. Tesla battery sizes are generally in the 60 to 100kWh range. To get from amp-hours (or milliamp-hours) to watt-hours, you need to know the battery voltage; watt-hours are equal to amp-hours multiplied by battery voltage. The mobile battery you're talking about is probably one cell, which would have a voltage somewhere around 3.5V (kind of hard to say, because the voltage varies throughout the charge cycle). An EV's battery is built from a large number (about 100 or so) of cells all connected in series, and without knowing what the pack voltage is, it's hard to relate amp-hours to watt-hours.

@@Yathuprem It would, if its battery could accept the full 20kW even when it's very close to full. Most (all?) EV battery controllers reduce the charging current as the battery approaches a full charge. And as Mr. Cooley says, an EV's AC charger is part of the vehicle's equipment. A Honda Fit came with a 6.6kW on-board charger, so that's the maximum the car will take from an AC mains connection, even if that connection (the "EVSE") has a 20kW rating. And the Fit did not have any provision for DC "fast charging". Honda's 2012 web site speaks of a three-hour recharge time with a suitable 240VAC supply.

Your maximum rate for Level 2 charging is wrong. Some Tesla destination chargers will go up to 22kW but most L2 chargers are 7.7 kW max. But at 22kW the amperage draw would be near 90A, so a researcher probably confused kW with Amps. Level 2 is not a fast charger either. It usually takes a few hours to charge a car fully. You got Level 3 mostly correct.

Battery Swapping, so if you intend to get rid of your Pure EV and know how to check the current life of your battery pack, swap it several times until you get a very healthy battery & sell the Pure EV. You know people would do this.

A 110 outlet can give you 10000 miles of range every year if only plugged up overnight. Everyone is down on that plug, but for many if not most it's enough.

Definitely agree Charles. It's worked great for my life since I drive less than 30 miles a day most days. Even with longer trips, I can still make up the difference in a day since it's not imperative to leave the house with a full charge.

If you charge 10 iphones one by one, it'll take a day and night. If you charge them together by connecting them to different chords, you only need the time to charge one iphone.

Seems a bit silly to have AC to DC onboard permentantly, just make a level 1 transformer that is portable for trips, and use static DC chargers for everything else. Why should the cars have to lug around the transformer and hurt efficiency?

Some inaccuracies here. Many EV owners get by just fine with a level 1 charger. If your round trip commute is less than 60 miles, then level 1 is plenty. Especially, if you have a plug-in hybrid that can go to gas if needed.

Eventually we might see a standardization across the board, but just like there are different power delivery methods for cellphones, car manufactures also want to show off their tech and prove it is better than others.

your numbers are wrong. Level 2 is not upto 90kW fast charge. The fastest Level 2 Single phase chargers are 7Kw. only the Renault Zoe can charge upto 43kW using 3 phase AC and no other car charges at a higher AC rate than that. Level 2 charging is also dependent on what charger is fitted internally in the car itself.

I'm not sure how long Tesla is going to get away with that "chrage with us or charge till tomorrow" scheme. That has "monopoly lawsuit" written all over it.

Tesla has offered access to their charging network (as they have done with their patents) to other manufacturers, but everyone else wanted to do it their own way. In Europe, the Unified CCS standard is will on its way to becoming universal. Even Tesla have adapted their Euro-spec models to use it.

2:00 Level 2. Level 2 tops out at 10KW or less on ALL EVs, except tesla that can suck up to 22KW from 240V power. How did you come up with 'up to 90KW'?? 3:00 'That is already delivering DC to your car. A messy inefficient conversion no longer has to happen on the way to the battery'

danwat1234, he probably meant 80A not 90 kW. The Tesla HPWC in US has 80 A max, 19.2 kW.

Level 2 goes up to 90 kW?! Ho'y f**k , Brian! Are you sure. The amount of amps you need to get 90 kW from 240V would be several times what you see from an Arc welder. If there's time to edit, lads at Roadshow, Level 2 @ 240 V deliver 3.3 kW (16 Amps), 6.6 kW (32 Amps) and the newest trend is 11 kW (46 Amps) now seen as 'premium Level 2'. Then we jump up to Level 3 with the 50kWh CHAdeMOs and etc. That's all ignoring what goes on here in Europe where we have 3-phase AC Level 2 that can deliver anything from 3.3 kW up to 22 kW (specifically limited only to Renault Zoes, Smart ForTwos and Tesla S and X).

Why don't the car companies use a friggin universal charging plug? It's like the obdi readers. Each car company had it's own shape to access the engine codes. In 97 the said screw that just make them all the same connection so people can see this stuff without buying 16 different tools. If EVs continue to grow in number, there will be a universal plug. Otherwise, the charging stations are gonna look like upside down octopuses and nobody wants to park next to an upside down octopus. Just saying.

Great video, but it only proves that EVs are still not really there, and perhaps never will be. Remember the "Big Paddle" that GM favored, then Nissan came up with the "Small Paddle" and then the was the AVCON, good luck to you if you have one of those cars still running today.

Level 1 chargers are only for getting enough charge to get you to a good charger? What is this nonsense? Level one is the most commonly used charging system. This is what you use to top up your battery overnight while you're asleep. Most ev drivers use about 1/3 of their charge on a daily basis. A level one which comes with most ev's is likely all you will need 90% of the time. This lower voltage, trickle charge is also easier on your battery.

Whether L1 charging is easier on the battery is debatable, since a battery recharged using L1 will spend a larger portion of its time at higher states of charge, and high charge state is held to be one of the major stress factors for battery longevity (along with temperature). Also, at least some cars (my LEAF, for one) impose a fixed overhead power drain during any charging (brainlessly running a cooling pump regardless of whether things are actually hot) operation, so L1 charging is less efficient than L2.

@@levenkay4468 what do you mean by "higher state of charge"? Level 1=12 amps, Level 2=30 amps. You have a battery cooling pump on your leaf? Mine doesn't, nor has any leaf ever made. No active cooling has long been the biggest criticism of the leaf.

@@levenkay4468 if by state of charge you are referring to the potential damage to batteries caused by leaving your car sitting with a full charge, you can mitigate the risk with smart use of the charge timer, regardless of the charging level.

@@1964mcqueen No, of course there's no cooling pump for the _battery_ ; that would be too sensible. The LEAF *does* have a cooling pump for the onboard charger and possibly the power inverter for the motor drive, though. And that pump runs whenever the car's charging.

@@1964mcqueen Yes. But the faster the charge rate, the more the car can postpone the actual charge operation, thereby sitting for a longer time at a lower state of charge. If all you can do is L1 charging, the car probably has to start charging as soon as it's plugged in, meaning that it will inevitably sit at higher states of charge for a longer time as it slooowly approaches full charge. Admittedly, this is splitting hairs, but you did say that L1 charging is less stressful, and I'm offering the "how long does the car sit at high state-of-charge?" argument in opposition.

This is exactly the reason why EV is not getting popular. Too much trouble. Too much time. New Technology MUST be easy to use to become popular. Liquid Fuel is not going away anytime soon.

It's really not. The J1772 / CCS is becoming the standard. With the J1772 / CCS configuration you can charge on Level 1 , level 2 and Level 3 ( DC Fast if equipped in the car). He mentioned CHADEMO as the oddball, and while there are EVs with CHADEMO only ( level 3 DC fast ) most manufacturers are favouring the J1772 / CCS setup, especially in the U.S. Think gas station nozzle. They are all the same (J1772) but flow rates may vary. Think of CHADEMO as the diesel nozzle at the same pump that's on the way out. The Apple in the room is Tesla. Fun fact though....all Tesla model 3s delivered in Europe are equipped with the J1772 / CCS configuration. Electricity is the same, but plugs can be changed.
