I have hauled fuel from the distribution terminals to gas stations for 12 years. All the gasoline of a specific octane comes from the same storage tank at the terminal. The only difference is the additive injected during the truck loading process. This is where you get your 'branding' of a certain company however on a typical full 8,500 gallon load of gasoline there is less than 3 gallons of additive injected. By EPA regulations all gasoline must have an additive to reduce engine deposits so a gas that is not branded by a specific company gets a generic additive put in. Are branded additives that much better? At the injected ratio it would be hard to say but marketing often leads people to buy products that really aren't any better and sometimes worse because the marketing company plays consumers on their perceived reputation.

I agree. I also used to deliver fuel to stations. I worked for a company that owned both branded stations and generic, "no name" stations. I would get the branded fuel from Conoco-Philips since the branded stations were all Philips 66 stations and it was always "splash blended" (mixed in the tanker truck itself) and the "no name" fuel would come from Chevron. The additive was the same, just less of it for the "generic" fuel. In reality, the generic stations would get a mixture of Conoco and Chevron fuel since its not like we would clean out the tanker between loads. So some residual would always be mixed in.

I live in San Francisco area and worked at a Costco for 5 years at the same location. 1 year was strictly Costco gas regular from 1/4 mark to full tank same pump. I got 21mpg average. I went with my local Chevron for one year same pump regular gas once i reached the 1/4 mark. Maintenance was done myself and I saw a slight increase to 21.5 mpg. I saw no major difference. The only benefit i got with Chevron was no wait time. Vs Costco

The quick the pipeline terminal (refinery truck loading rack) can deliver branded or unbranded gasoline .. The difference and how that it's done is the basic gasoline is the same but with branded gas usually near the loading rack there is a smaller tank ( or Tanks) containing each companies own package of fuel additives and this is added to each companies branded gasolines the cheap no name gasolines usually don't get these additives added to the gasoline
@craigquann
@craigquann 5 лет назад
The gas is supplied by 1 refinery per geographical location. That supplies all/most stations regardless of brand. The depots mix the additives per customer (stations/brand requirements) as it's being loaded on the tanker truck to deliver to whatever station. In my area imperial oil (esso) has the main location and pipeline to supply both shell depot, valaro depot and their own. Some fuel does get shipped by rail but most by pipe. Imperial oil then supplies gas to shell, Canadian tire, costco, esso and a few other smaller brands. The only difference is the additives. (Generally)
@BigHeadClan
@BigHeadClan 5 лет назад
As Cooley alluded to there are only a small handful of actual suppliers for gasoline, Chevron, Shell and few others. Typically a Shell station will receive only Shell gasoline and Chevron will receive only Chevron the exception to that is if a refinery is down for maintenance or there is some type of supply constraint. In terms of Fuel tanks at Gas-Stations at least here in Canada a Tank needs to be inspected and dug up at set intervals and replaced as required, 10-15 years or so if my memory serves me correctly. Modern tanks are far lighter, heavily resistant to corruption and less likely to degrade, the bed-rock and materials placed under them has also been changed to help absorb any possible leaks. Lastly for Direct Injection vs Port Inject? Most of the time DI engines will suffer from carbon build up but as Cooley pointed out it vary's on a engine by engine basis. VW and BMW used to have major issues with their motors and required them serviced every 30-40K Miles depending on your driving habits, most engines past 2014 however have tighter tolerances and operate at higher/lower temperatures in key areas that help prevent carbon from adhering the metal surfaces. Infiniti's twin-turbo V6 that came out in 2016 for example have yet to report a single issue with carbon build up, they will likely need to be cleaned at some point but whether that is at 65K or 100K we don't know yet. There simply isn't enough cars that are at those higher mileages. With all of that said don't cheap out on your gasoline, prices are cheap in the US right now and the lower octane fuel can sometimes lead to Knock, incomplete burns of the fuel, contain less detergents , offer worse gas millage and can lead to additional carbon build up. If your car says 91 or 93 that's what you put in.

BigHeadClan Everything you stated seems to be pulled directly from your ass, because all I see is bullshit. 1st of all, Mr. Cool is either wrong or your interpretation of what he meant is, because according to the comment posted by “DieselMutt88” here in this comment section, he’s been hauling fuel from the distribution centers to the gas stations for the past 12yrs. and he says that every gas stations 91 octane comes from the same exact storage tank at the terminal. The only thing that separates them from that point is the brands specific additive that’s put in during the truck loading process. So you’re completely full of shit or just downright talking straight out of your ass and don’t know jack shit to begin with... I trust the word of a person who actually works the job for a living before I trust anything this fucking actor by the name of “Mr. Cool” says. As far as engines having higher tolerances after 2014? Umm FYI: That actually happened in 2012.... What exactly? Oh don’t worry about it, I just decided to pull that out of my ass the same way you did with your little 2014 comment based on complete and utter bullshit... As if all car manufacturers in the world decided to get together and agree to have “higher tolerances” for fuck all reason and suddenly change the way they’ve been making their engines... Stfu with your Bullshit! You say 2016 Infinity’s have yet to report a single issue in regards to carbon buildup because there hasn’t been enough time for the vehicles to reach 100k miles?? How stupid are you? Don’t you know that every manufacturer has mules of every car they make and runs the dog shit out of them day and night for testing purposes and could probably reach 100k within 1-2 weeks if they wanted to get the test results for themselves? You fucking moron. Shut your mouth and go back to class, because you must be in elementary school with all the dumb shit you posted about.

I always stick to top tier gas stations. Shell, BP, Exon Mobile, and Costco usually. I have found that Exon Mobile gives me the best gas mileage (at least here in Ohio). And Costco and BP give me the same gas mileage, which is suspect might be from using the same supplier. Shell Nitro has so much detergent, I honestly think it hurts fuel economy! But what do I know...I may be a Chemical Engineering, but fuel is not my field!

I buy Shell no matter what price it is. Have the rewards program so I have 5 cents a gallon. I have a Hyundai with GDI and the shell is top tier and supposedly has detergents to prevent the carbon buildup. I know there's other top tier brands, but the shell is perfectly on my way home from work. Whether the gas makes a difference or not, if it does, it's worth ten extra bucks a week.

Believe it or not there are still quite a few gas stations out there that do find refineries that so gas that does not meet standards meaning no detergent packages meaning it will make the engine in your vehicle dirty the you pump it for example if your in the state of Colorado sells gas like this where it has very little detergent compared to if you went to a show or BP gas station to buy gas meaning that the lower detergent fuel will cause your engine to get dirty faster And in some cases really good high quality fuel such as shell V power or B p's premium grade fuel that has extra detergent in it over their regular grade fuel will actually slowly clean your engine over time Where you save money on gas in some cases you will be spending the extra money on fuel additives to help clean the carbon deposits off of your engine's internals Cheap no name gas could very well mean dirty engine need to use fuel additives all the time good high quality brand name gas crude mean it will actually clean your engine without having to use additives.

I think the top tier gasolines with federally mandated and regulated additives are superior to generic store brands, I’ve never had any issues using them and they’re probably worth the few extra cents you’re paying at the pump. Independents and store brand gasolines are hit and miss, they might be OK for the most part but I’ve also ran into some issues before as well. Could be the major brands do a better job of keeping their stations and franchised stations in better shape and thus you’re less likely to get water or dirt contamination from leaky rusty storage tanks.

Sam's Club or Costco usually have the best prices if you are a member. You want to go to a BUSY gas station. A busy station will also reduce the chances of this happening whether they change the filters regularly or not. I bought gas from Wal-mart once... never again. I burned through that gas 50-100% faster than any other gas I used.

Costco or Arco are much smarter options than Chevron.

This isn't correct. Most major brands we'll only use fuel from their own distributors. Take Chevron for example. A Chevron terminal will only produce fuel for Chevron stations an Exxon Mobil stations. They have one sub account on Flint Hills which is the account all their diesel fuel is produced under. But in some parts of the world you have these are fathers like Colonial oil which produces all of Shell's fuel east of the Mississippi. BP produces gasoline and Diesel for a bunch of different suppliers. But it's all different the base fuel is different the additive packages different. Last but not least are these suppliers have different requirements for transport and delivery. Again let's look at Chevron. if you're going to haul Chevron fuel in a tank that tank has to be dedicated to Chevron it cannot have pulled anyone else has fuel. And the inside of that tank has to be clean and dry before every load. Chevron and hess are the only two that do this they also filter their fuel down to 2 microns every step of the way.

I was recently fueling up at a Mobil station in Denver one late night. The fuel delivery guy was there, refilling the tanks. I walked over and decided to chat with him about this topic. He said " Mobil and Exonn are the same, all gasoline comes from the same refineries and individual stations use additives while he's refilling the tanks. He said Shell is really good as is Exonn Mobil, Costco is the most rigorous when adding the additive packages they use. Costco takes this process more seriously than anyone else.

@@DJR5280 it all depends on location for most brands. She'll is good if your within 100 miles of a Shell terminal. But shell branded gas in FL sucks. But shell GA gets its gas off the ATL pipeline. So it's very good gas. You did the best thing you can do to find the best gas in your area. Find a delivery driver and ask.

Everytime I get ready to wrap my mind around buying a new car with direct injection, I see a video that slaps me back to reality! Not sure if I want to get tangled up with these forced induction and direct injected cars. Looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

Interesting! From now on, I would just go to the gas station convenience for the fill up. Soon, I will replace my current fleet to electric. Say bye bye to my local gas station. 🦅🦅🇺🇸
