We received a phone call from Ohio State Highway Patrol requesting a heavy wrecker for a crash between a car and a semi tractor trailer. They advised the trailer axles were heavily damaged on the trailer. Watch as we quickly get this Walmart trailer rolling again.

Thank you! "Fix" can be used loosely here, as it would still require lots more work to be fixed 100% correctly...but yes, a little bit of mechanical ability and understanding goes a long way.

@@WilcoxGarageRecovery Not sure I'd even have considered the possibility of swapping out a wheel set like that on a trailer. I suspect that's partly as it seems they build them differently in the USA over Europe. Sliding wheels to adjust turning length is not normal here. Is that a spare axle unit you keep at the yard to allow you to make road-side bodges to let you recover damaged rigs like that ?

@@stuinNorway Yes, we have a couple axle assemblies we keep at the shop for instances like this. We like putting the super single tires on because it is a little bit smaller width for loading on our rollbacks.

@@stuinNorway trucker here...the sliding axle sets gives the ability to adjust the weight distribution between the front and rear axle sets.... some states have restrictions on where you can position the axle so the 53' trailer can make a minimum engineered turn..

Great job guys. We’ve always used a trailer dolly on the opposite end and towed from bad end, but I like this idea. The next trailer we get stuck with hopefully has a good axle assy. Lol. Be safe guys.

Thanks! As long as the rails have a good spot in them, this it the way we prefer to do it. We want to make it (or another axle assembly) into a true dolly that could serve both functions, by working the way we used it in the video, or by hooking to the front on the kingpin if need be. That would make it more versatile for us. We like running the super singles on the assembly because its just a little bit narrower for loading up on our rollback easier.

Yes, for sure, it was definitely mangled! The car was towed away before we got there, so not sure how the damage on the car looked in relativity to the damage on the trailer.

Definately got the knowledge and the equipment to do the job--every job like that is different. You have to be able to look/ascertain/fix/move on--only comes w/ experience. Love that trailer dolly--may only use it occasionally--but every time it more than pays for itself.Those ['skates' under the trailer wheels worked out really good, to.. Nice!!

I will never understand why some idiots in their little cars think they can contend with an eighteen wheeler. This was an excellent video! I have never seen a damaged trailer have a destroyed axle assembly changed on-site. Well done! Kudos to the Walmart driver. If the hit to his trailer did that much damage then it was good fortune, and a good driver, that kept the rig from rolling over.

Thank you! Yes, from the time receiving the call to to the time of the trucks all put away back at the shop was about 2 hours and 30 minutes.... and the call was about a 25 minute drive away.

Some companies may, however we do not. Sometimes people call for a service, and then end up canceling before we arrive, and we end up making nothing....it's just the way it goes sometimes. Thanks for watching!

I don't want to second guess the wrecker operator but I'm just curious to ask why he just didn't remove the two front rims and chain the axle up. could of chained the the pin so it wouldn't jump on the rail.. You could limp the trailer to a drop yard running with only 2 tires on 1 side.. Seems like a WHOLE lot of work that wasn't necessary. Anyways, Good Work Wilcox 💪

Thank you! With the outer rim being folded over, the rim would have had to be cut in order to even gain access to the lug nuts. Then it would have been hard to remove the wheels since they were cinched into the rear. It could have been possible, but probably would not have been any quicker than (in our opinion) what was the safer way for transport. We ended up delivering the load to Walmart 2 hours later, so we were glad with our decision to change out the axle assembly.

We got the axles back...We ended up towing it to a trailer repair shop about 2 hours away, then removed the axles.

Thank you! Every company and every market is different, so Number 1 is to know your market and know your competition, and charge a competitive rate. We bill by the hour for each truck and each person at a scene like this. For instance, it seems the going rate for a rotator in our geographical region is anywhere from $800-$1500 per hour on recoveries like this, so we try to stay at an average, middle of the road rate.

Thank you! Our tractor has a wrecker/towing unit that goes on it called a Quickswap, so it makes it a pretty versatile piece of equipment. We can remove the towing unit in a matter of about 5 minutes, and then we can use it for a tractor to pull our Landoll trailer, or on recoveries like this one.

What happens to your axle at this point? Do you get it back?

Yes. Either the company supplies us with a new axle assembly to put under it at our shop, or we tow it to their shop and remove it. In this case, we delivered the load a few hours after towing it in because they were only about 40 minutes away from the Walmart location it was being dropped at. Still waiting on a decision what to do with the trailer from here.

Did the car occupants survive? By the looks of what you had to do, I’m thinking I already know the answer to that. So just curious. with the tail raised so high, does that put the nose of the trailer pressing into the catwalk and APU?

To our knowledge there were no serious injuries to the occupants of the car. It was cleaned up by another towing company before we arrived, so we didn't get to see it, and state patrol performed a standard report / inspection (which indicates no serious injury). No, there is still enough room that it doesn't hit the catwalk. It looks high, but it is still a relatively low angle because the trailer is so long.
