Cara Cara is a hybrid navel orange that looks like a regular old orange on the outside. Once you cut into it, though, you will never forget it! The flesh is pink - not the dark red of a blood orange, but the sparkling rose of a pink grapefruit. It is super juicy and the juice is pink, too.

Hi. Just cleaning up my Cara Cara Orange here. Cara Cara Orange is one of the earliest oranges you can get. This one is about 25 years old. It’s in a container. Here in California right now it’s late November and these are just about ready to eat.
One of the special things about this Cara Cara Orange is actually it’s interior color. It’s pretty amazing. This beautiful pink flesh. Absolutely to die for. The pink flesh of the Cara Cara orange is definitely what makes it special. This is an orange that was discovered in Venezuela sometime in the mid-70s. Introduced to California thereafter, this orange does well everywhere oranges do good. But like all great pieces of fruit, the test is in the wonderful flavor the Cara Cara has. Outstanding.

Hi, i live in Virginia. Will the cara cara thrive here? When is it ripe to pick?
@edwardlaivo8647
@edwardlaivo8647 5 лет назад
Hi Asmr, as an indoor/outdoor plant it would do well. Thrive is a goal when growing in that you must provide it an indoor location with plenty of light and be careful not to over water. It is an early ripening variety meaning fall. So it makes it a good orange choice to try indoor/ outdoors

Is this the same as a red navel orange?

Hi Darren, here is an answer from Ed. "I guess you could call it that, but it is rarely referred to as that in the trade. Only in text on the internet. But I really know of no Red Fleshed Navel on the market currently. That said, the Cara Cara is always considered a Pink flesh and even on mine at my home, which I have had for 15+ years I have never had red flesh." I hope this helps, thank you!

@@Naturehills I just bought a red navel at Lowe’s today. It was label (printed from manufacturer, not Lowe’s), so is a cara cara really the same as a red navel?

Question: Why is the trunk awkward? The base narrows really sharply?
@edwardlaivo8647
@edwardlaivo8647 6 лет назад
Hi Matthew, the rootstock is the old Cuban Shaddock used by Four Winds Growers before it was cleaned up. It is just the Cara Cara is not as big a grower on that rootstock. Keep in mind that the plant has spent its entire life of now 26 years in a container. Mostly the C35 rootstock is used for todays Semi Dwarfs as the Cuban Shaddock lost its true dwarfing after being put through a virus clean up program some years ago

Edward Laivo so do rootstock currently in use have the same affect? That the trunk will be a weird shape because one grows larger than the other?
@edwardlaivo8647
@edwardlaivo8647 6 лет назад
It can happen, more some with other types of citrus like Lemons, but it happens more often in container growing because of the restricted root. I don't see it as often in the ground except with the most dwarfing rootstocks which I am not a fan of. I like the C35 Semi Dwarf which is the most popular rootstock these days and I think that it is not as prone to this abnormality with most citrus varieties. Mind you there is no adverse effect on the tree or fruiting after 26 years in the container.

Edward Laivo I'm just concerned about the look know than the functional ability. But I am also doughty concerned that it could hurt the tree in the long run.

@edwardlaivo8647 5 лет назад
Hi Mohammad, where are you? Citrus will generally tolerate hot Humid Climates as long as your Drainage is good. Remember that Cara Cara would still require protection in colder Winter climates.
