Nian gao (年糕), also known as Sticky Rice Cake or Kuih Bakul, is a popular rice cake usually served during the Chinese New Year. Nian Gao is sometimes known as Chinese New Year cake. It is a sweet delicacy prepared using glutinous rice flour and sugar. Although it can be eaten throughout the year, it is most popular and sort after during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
And the good news is this simplified version of making Nian Gao is not at all difficult to make at home. What more is you only need simple ingredients and only 2 hours of steaming to enjoy this auspicious rice cake. For this recipe, you can use either of the 2 methods to make the Nian Gao. Method 1 of slowly mixing the batter will result in a soft and waxy texture. Method 2 of kneading the batter into smooth dough will result in a more chewy and firmer texture. So choose the method you prefer.
Using this Nian Gao, you can make delicious Fried Nian Gao sandwiches with taro and sweet potato, Steamed Nian Gao rolled with shredded coconut, or just pan fry to enjoy. So let’s start cooking!

You steam the nian gao for both version. The need not sieve the syrup but sieving the nian gao batter is important to make sure you have smooth nian gao.

Where did you buy such nice banana leaves? Why must the shiny part of the leaves face up?
@Huangkitchen

It is frequently available in most Asian grocery stores and the wet market as well. Very affordable too. Just want to make sure the non shiny side faces upwards in the mould as the smell of banana leaves is more intense on this side hence will enhance the overall taste of the rice cake.
