HubNut has acquired a caravan - a 1981 Abbey GT 212. But what is it like to tow a caravan across Wales? With a poorly Citroen XM? There's only one way to find out!
This video unleashes some brand new technology for HubNut. A selfie-stick!

Years ago I bought a £250 caravan from preloved. Tyres looked okay when I viewed it. Drove 20 miles home and the treads had come open and could see the plies.

haha i remember my dad towing a 17 foot avondale sheffield to near aberystwyth via mold (yr wyddrug) with a Maestro. We did it a couple of times a year. With repetitive road rage from dad. However this was the 1980s and early 1990s, so the term road rage had not been invented yet. He was just shouting and swearing. A lot. I used to make him angrier by laughing at it.

Class! I am another old git who can tow a caravan or drive a 7 1/2 ton truck on the strength of my 40 year old licence and I am also a recent caravan buyer. I work in the Thames Valley but don't live there and don't want to. Happy to do the job, take the money and then trundle back up the A303 on Thursday evening. In the interests of keeping as much of my hard-earned cash to myself I stay in a caravan during the week, at a fraction of the cost of lashing out for a B&B. I bought my cheapie van off Gumtree. It was more than £222, in fact it went into four figures (just), but it is twenty years younger. It even has patterned upholstery which doesn't look as though it was designed for an old folks' home! One thing I have learned in four weeks of owning my own van is how much it could cost to get everything working as it should. Caravan engineers charge more than a mobile mechanic and I sent the first two packing when they said they had a lead time of 4 to 6 weeks to book a slot to have a look at my van. So I got to work with a voltmeter, screwdriver and some electrical tape and almost everything now works. 12 volt lights, 240 volt lights, fridge, sink in kitchenette, flushing toilet and even a shower. I did have to spend £2.65 today on a pack of 5 little 12V bulbs and I will have to buy a couple of items which I knew about when I bought the van but these can wait until the right parts turn up on eBay. I have often towed other people's tatty old vans, usually to festivals. And the vans are usually about the vintage of the 1981 Abbey or sometimes even older. Old vans are much heavier than anything built since the 1990s, as they have a steel chassis, which is quite a significant proportion of the weight of the vehicle. They are also built with a wooden frame clad with sheet aluminium. A rotten wooden frame is usually the end for an old van. I swear one of the old things I towed once had square wheels. Not only did it make the motion of my car distinctly uncomfortable, but anything more than 35-40 mph and it took on a wayward drunken swaying motion all of its' own. Of course I refused to take it out again but the following year the reason for its' wayward habit on the public highway was all too obvious. Very soon after it was despatched to the great caravan park in the sky and it is no more, not even a fond memory in the eyes of its' temporary residents!!! Interested to see if there is going to be a video on what you do with your van.

@@HubNut Do you know just how funny your 'one liners' are? It's not so much what you say, it's how you say them, the gap, and then the expression on your face. Such a down to earth bloke you are, which is probably why we Hub Nutters luv your adventures in the motoring world of ordinariness so much. On saying that, "a deeply troubled bathroom" will probably live with me forever now!

glad you made it home ok 👌. my worst experience towing was when I went down to Cornwall to pick up a bluebird got stuck in a housing estate nearly burnt my clutch out on my 2010 volvo v70 then I got stuck again on the same housing estate had two local lads help me unload the car an take the trailer off then put it all back together an took me upto the a30 words 24 hours of my life. drove it in a whole 24 hours none stop ✋ 😂😂😂 promised myself never again. 😂😂😂

Another great vid. I think it's worth pointing out that people unlucky enough to have passed their test after Jan 1997 (like me :( ) can legally tow, as long as the car/trailer/caravan combined "train weight" is 3.5 tonnes or under. That is a restrictive limit of course, you're not going to find many suitable tow cars and caravans that together, laden, weigh less than that. It's good to know you can tow a trailer tent or folding camper or maybe one of those tiny compact caravans behind something like a Focus with out any problems. Anything above 3.5t and it's driving test time.

Hi, time flies. I believe it’s changed again now? Cheers
@tomwinch9107
@tomwinch9107 Год назад
Yes, it changed in December 2022 so category B licence holders automatically get B + E, so can tow a trailer over 750kg with a vehicle up to 3500kg ... so they can (and already had) remove the option to take a B + E test ... because safety first! I believe you can take a trailer towing course - not that anyone who needs it will opt to pay for one when it is not required! Hope this is useful info ... Loving your back catalogue and 'full' beard!

I love being inside old caravans, they're always little relics of simpler times inside because no-one's gonna change a kitchen or the wallpaper in a caravan. I just don't love 'caravan-ing' so much :p I'm slowly falling in love with your citroen though, that back seat looks so damn comfy :D comfier than any modern BMW I know of.

+PvanP Yeah, perhaps I could get my caravan delivered to sites for me so I don't have to tow it! I've been working inside it today. Blissful on a sunny day. XM seats are pretty comfy - rear seat probably more so than the fronts.

ive bought a couple of cheap cars off ebay, both with dangerous faults. One even had a fake mot, that was reported and this resulted in the mot station being closed down, this was in Birmingham. Can you advise people what to look for and how to avoid an expensive and possibly life threatening ending.

I can't believe that you forgot to show all non-citropath's one of it's hidden party tricks. Put your XM on idle and walk around in the caravan and you have a pretty dull version of a roller coaster. The speed depends on how clogged your rear height corrector is. And where is the Russian tow-hitch French Citroën roulette (of doom)? The correct way is to lower the support wheel on the caravan and then lower your car. The challenge is to be quick enough to uncouple the caravan before the car slowly crush the small wheel.

Chop the top off it and make a car trailer out of the chassis. You'll still have a wheeled machine that doesn't need an annual roadworthy-ness test and weighs more(with a car on) but suddenly you'll get respect for having something to transport other vehicles on (especially if its classic) instead of being globally detested for hogging the roads up in a road tax dodging tin snail. Funny how people view caravans isn't it 😂

Professional driver LIGHT FLASHES should be part of the std' Driving test. 1) good manners, 2) Driving safety, Driver COMMUNICATION is EVERYTHING . Good drivers & Professional drivers look to eachother for Help & guidance & Good Manners. Many times Larger Vehicles need a little more road space or swing area than a tiny shopping car ! ! REMEMBER THAT FACT ! EVERYONE PLS ! & WE will give you a wave & a Smile !! The ROAD is our WORKPLACE & OFFICE !! RESPECT IT ! Delivery drivers have SET Time slots for delivery. A late delivery can cost £1000's . Good road manners = A Stress Free Journey. YES Even the Best of us get in the wrong Lane from time to time. MAYBE we havn't been there before ? SOMEONE TRAVELLING FASTER THAN YOU IS A MANIAC !! SOMEONE TRAVELLING SLOWER THAN YOU IS A MORON !! SO WHICH DAY ARE YOU THE PERFECT DRIVER ? Ans NONE !! That driver needs anger management courses, & A Stress level Check Up. Maybe Re take the latest driving test ? Driving Below the Speed limit is also " AN OFFENCE " and can result in a driving BAN ! & Heavy Fine ! ( obviously Road & weather conditions etc. Vehicle & load etc. ) Some drivers need to know this Fact ! 35mph in a 60 mph limit is totally UNACCEPTABLE . It Proves Incompetence to be in control of any Motor vehicle. ( without External Circumstances in play ) Weather / Vehicle type / Load / or other VALID Reason. ) Tractors are fine, they are doing a job, & Going as fast as possible. = no issue ! My complaint is perfectly good cars in perfect road conditions driving continuously at 1/2 the speed limit for endless mile after mile, with no room to pass them. Bring in a 10 yr or 15 yr driving test / Licence Expiry date, Everyone must pass the latest test. if a driver fails , = they must start from Scratch. ( fails on many points / serious errors etc. ) If they Just scrape through give them a Provisional Licence, For 12 months until they pass. & Limit the engine power to under 1000cc's or something ? Until Passed. That would take 25% of the bad drivers OFF our roads. 25% improvement in Emissions. & Parking Issues. Some would just quit. Others would fail so badly that they would also quit. Many would not bother to re-test for various reasons. The TEST should include Motorway Driving & City Center Rush hour Roundabouts & lane changing. 1 hour in city traffic without causing any road user to change speed or direction. Crossing 5 lanes of city traffic calmly & with competence SAFELY.

This must be "living on the edge". Every second I'm expecting something to break, stop working or fall off. Is this what the educationally-challenged areas of the UK are like now? People living in Scotland or Wales have lost most of their no-qualification employers, and have to exist on pennies.
@HubNut
@HubNut 6 лет назад
No. I choose a low income lifestyle because why bother trying to compete with others? Who wants finance and shiny stuff that actually belongs to a bank?
@seankirby2580
@seankirby2580 6 лет назад
Here in the more-educated, more affluent parts of the UK, we buy cars for cash. I have never used finance to buy a car. You choose a low-income lifestyle because there's nothing left in Wales to fund any other. Your house looks like it's worth tuppence-halpenny and your cars are junk that others want rid of. Get a job, get a wash and some decent clothes, plus a shave and haircut.
