Hi KW's well explained presentation with most Ute's fit a bullbar ,rear canopy , fridge tools etc tray most will be well over. My case towing 2.5 t van with TBW of 265 kg with a LC200 the gvm &gcm are fine it is the rear loading I am close. I think the front boot on caravans are fairly limited what can be stored . I think basically caravan buyers get too many options and take to much gear including the kitchensink. Personally I have been weighing gear removing non essential gear some has never been used on may trips away.
@KiwiWanderers
@KiwiWanderers 2 года назад
Yes I agree we all take too much stuff and the front boot is for decoration only really. Thanks for your comments and taking the time to watch. Happy camping Greg and Sandy

Jayco notoriously underrate their vans ATM, I have just had my camper re-certified by an Engineer $303.00 As the Axle group load capacity was 2000 Kg the new GTM has gone up to 2000kg from 1659kg and the AGG is 2200 from 1869kg
@brucesutton2531
@brucesutton2531 2 года назад
Don't forget to consider the weight on the Ranger axles too. 320 kg on the towball will add more than 450 kg to the rear axle of the Ranger which has an axle rating of 1850kg. Is the Jayco rating of 2939 kg GTM as written, or GVM as spoken, as they are not the same. If GVM (or ATM in Aussie speak) then your caravan is grossly over weight by 400 kg
@KiwiWanderers
@KiwiWanderers 2 года назад
Yea Bruce You re right axle weight is always a consideration. we are so close to several max weights. I havent weighed the axles separately as yet But expect it to be very close to maximum. 2939kg is the GTM. It appears as a presenter I am quite a good mechanic... hehe (you are the first person to bring that mistake to my attention and the vid has been up for 3 months ) Appreciate your feed back and taking time to watch the video. Cheers Greg

Have you added the weight of the canopy on the back of the Ranger? plus you must also add the weight of the hitch inlcuding any bullbars etc of items added.
@KiwiWanderers
@KiwiWanderers 2 года назад
Hi Shane, Yes we have included all that, it all adds up and that is why we are so close to GCM. Very hard to stay legal with all the extras we must have now-days (hehehe) Thanks For watching

Bit late to the party , but that van weight is pretty heavy. We’ve got a 20’6” van and keep it at around 2600 or so. Sometimes we don’t even bother filling the water if we are going to a park or property. That would bring us down to about 2400. Got a Wildtrak that pulls it fine.

Yea we are heavy weight is a constant challenge… I’m due for a reweigh soon as we have had a bit of a sort out… so hopefully we will be a bit lighter. Thanks for watching and commenting Cheers Greg

A great video and it's obvious that you have a very good working knowledge of caravan weights and sadly many don't. Something that did surprise me though was the GVM of 2600 KG, ie before you added he TBM It looks like a big standard ranger with the only added accessory being the towbar. I think the kerbwieght of the Ranger is 2200, so let's add 50 kg for the towbar. You then had two ebikes which are Heavy so let's add 50kg for two plus you and the boss lady. Let's say 180kg I, so I would have guesstimated around 2480. Obviously the weigh bridge tells the truth.
@KiwiWanderers

yea a bit higher than UI was expecting as well I am due for another drive of the weigh bridge so it will be interesting , Thanks for watching Cheers Greg
@web525
@web525 Год назад
The kerb weight of a car generally does not include a full fuel tank, only 10% capacity. Then you have to add the weight of all the other accessories , eg the canopy, to get the real weight of the the Ranger.
@Steven_Rowe
@Steven_Rowe Год назад
@@web525 your incorrect here. Tare weight is only 10 litres of fuel. Kerb weight is when the fuel tank is full .

The ranger has no real problem in road it is working pretty hard on some of the steeper hills we have not done any real off road stuff but in 4wd it handles muddy grass and stuff we don’t have fantastic tyres on atm so that might be our next upgrade… thanks for watching

GTM to my understanding is the total of the trailer mass ie as the trailer is weighed so you are actually way over on the trailer, would suggest going back to jayco on this .
@KiwiWanderers
@KiwiWanderers Год назад
Hi Rob OK so I Pasted this from aussie site "Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) is the maximum mass recommeded by the manufacturer of your fully loaded caravan when it is hitched to your tow vehicle. The GTM of the caravan is transmitted to the ground by only the caravan tyres and excludes the mass distributed to the towing vehicle through the coupling "is this correct ??
@robward7662
@robward7662 Год назад
@@KiwiWanderers well that is quite ambiguous, as when you are talking gtm with heavy vehicle the trailer mass is exactly that the total mass of the trailer. Will have to do some research because I am in exactly same situation as you I suspect and really it comes down to how that trailer mass is seen.
@stuartpx1
@stuartpx1 Год назад
Robward, I think you're referring to the ATM
@robward7662
@robward7662 Год назад
@@stuartpx1 no, the way the gtm is calculated is the question is it (1) the trailer weight as it sits on a weighbridge by itself I.e. not hooked up. Or (2) the weight on the wheels of the trailer only. As a engineer I think it is (1) and therefore many are well exceeding trailer ratings

You are terribly mistaken regarding the terms. You swap at will between GLW and GW .. GLW is the manufacturers spec. GW is the actual weight. This is important for working out which class of licence you need .. Class 1 or 2?

Just adding your 3050 trailer weight is it’s net trailer weight
@4x4maximus
@4x4maximus Год назад
Good explanation. But again. Inexperienced. Your axle weights are the most important! Your tyre temps and pressure are not telling you anything. Its your legal obligation snd responsibility to ensure you know your weights, just saying tyre temps look fine will not hold up in court if questioned, you must before venturing out on a trip be 100% liable, or youll face negligence charges and costs in an incident due to insurance not covering you and not to mention criminal charges (ever see the costs insurance companies absorb for emergency responders attending? You dont want that bill, trust me) Also it's easier to overload axles then you think and its no so much the weight, it the weight balance. Your manufacturer will note the percentage required. Usually 80%. Meaning your front axle can't be any less then 80% of your rear axle weight, with a ball weight of 300kg+ I can guarantee your your below 80% on the front and will be liable for negligence if you cause an accident. It's extremely important to get every weight right not only for stability and steering, but insurance and liability reasons. At your weights that van is just simply to heavy. Ideally you want 500kg+ free payload per axle group. atleast 1000kg is good measure in the tow car as the ultimate safe driving combination is to have your tow vehicle heavier then trailer. So as a driving experts and mass management and load distribution professional. Please I urge you, get a gvm upgrade, make your car heavier with bullbars winch side steps canopy and draws etc anything to get it heavier then van and still have enough payload in both by transferring personal belongings and battery systems to car lifting your vans payload And don't deduct ball weight from van, that's part of your van weight and its added to car. You can't just magically lose weight in van, it's just adding weight to car
@KiwiWanderers
@KiwiWanderers Год назад
Wow Thanks for all the info: I agree the tow vehicle needs to be heavier than the caravan but here in NZ there is no legal requirement for this to be the case. We have just gone through a weight reduction in our van ( and yes I'm making a video about it) our GCM is now down to 5280 kg but the van is still heavier, my tow ball mass is down to 240kg. so we are better but still not perfect. My next weigh up will be with a specialist (rather than a weigh bridge) and we will see what our exact axle weights are. in NZ light vehicles (under 6000kg) are not weighed by the police , and I don't know any one who has had there light vehicles weighed in fact they are setting up active weigh stations throughout NZ where the vehicle is weighed as it drives down the road and flagged if its over weight. every thing under 6000kg is exempt. I am very conscious of our weight and I know there are lots of vans over weight in NZ (thats why i did the video) ya cant fix what you don't understand. Part of my working life was a motor vehicle insurance assessor and I am not a-wear of any motor vehicle claim being declined for weight in NZ with the exception of Heavy vehicles , but it may be different in Aussie. Our van tows very well but I think my upgrade will be to change the vehicle. being in the motor trade I have seen some bad results from aftermarket upgrades and am not a fan of the aftermarket GCM upgrade thing. So I think I will move to a LC200 (or300) or an American ute. I really appreciate you commenting on the video and hope your comments help or educate some of my subscribers, after all thats why I have a RU-vid channel. Cheers Greg

There seems to be a blind eye being shown buy government authorities re these matters ? Always follow the money 💵 . The tow vehicle really doesn't need to weight as much at the trailer, but you should have a tow vehicle that is not dwarfed by the trailer. I have an enclosed car hauler trailer that has a GVWR of 14,000 lbs and until recently I was using a 2011 Ram 2500 diesel as my tow vehicle. The Ram weighed around 7,500 lbs empty and had a max tow rating of 14,500 lbs. I would not tow that trailer at capacity with anything smaller. Unfortunately the replacement for the Ram has been ordered for months and they recently converted it to a 2023 model with a delivery date some time after April. Truckless right now and it is not good.
