Carb to EFI Swap In A Parking Lot!

I try to swap the carb off my V8 RX7 to the new FiTech EFI system and get it all done in a parking lot!
I picked up a FiTech GoStreet 400hp efi system off CraigsList for $500 used and replaced my Edelbrock carb on my302 owerd Mazda RX7. To do the upgrade I also had to upgrade the fuel pump to keep up with the new EFI on the larger motor so I drop a Walboro 255lph pump into the gas tank.
Efi install was very straight forward and even dare to say easy! Anyone that can swap a carb and wire in a aftermarket stereo can install this EFI system!
It even started right up on the first try!

Nice setup. Little surprised to see this baby in a Mazda RX7 too. One suggestion is to leave off the background sound track and of course include a little driving. I think these systems are 1200 plus whatever else is needed. I'm seriously thinking of adding one on my 429 powering my 78 F250.

You did it in a parking lot, BUT, 99.9 % of people installing this or a sniper will not have a return line already run or even have an intank pump....

exactly. does an efi kit exist that can really replace a carburetor being fed by a 4-7psi mechanical or electric fuel pump with no return line required? i know that there are efi systems for marine engines that work with a low-pressure fuel supply but those are not available as bolt-on replacements for street vehicles.

Agreed...PCM pump motor does not need return line and applying exterior installation makes for much easier access when repairs or mods come around.

Also to note. I've dynoed a few of these units and if there are spots that just hang around 10:1 AFR its a sign of distribution issues with the manifold. Dual planes are a shit to tune with TBI. Get a good single plane manifold and you wont look back!

I bought a FiTech brand new.. First one I got was faulty from new.. Took 7 weeks to get another. Ran It for a 4,000 miles and had so many issues including 2 failed injectors. And first remote broke, had to buy another. Eventually I decided to ditch the FiTech for a Holley Sniper.. The Sniper is way way superior.. Zero issues in 5 months.

I do agree that more power is fun to play with. But the most fun I have ever had in a car was in my moms Miata. The fact that it had no power made it so I could drive it hard everywhere. With the V8 in the RX7 it was a blast but I was well over the speed limit to quickly to have fun all the time. I think there is a place for both!

Pick up an electric temp gauge and just splice it in with the efi sensor. Idk if it will mess with the signal by sending it to two gauges but just food for thought

Oh you can use a brass nipple and a tee with both the efi sensor and the probe for the mechanical gauge. As well as you could put your mechanical gauge in any place there's a plug in a water jacket. I run my efi sensor in the head and mechanical gauge from the intake

Too many steps were missing from this video including whether or not an O2 sensor port was already on exhaust system. Adding an O2 port to an exhaust system makes this install go from dead easy to a pain in the ass depending on your skill and equipment available to you. The Sniper comes with a no-weld system for O2 sensor install. This simplifies the install.

The FiTech system comes with the same no weld O2 system. But rather then using that i had a O2 bung welded in the exhaust while i was building the car. I try to future proof my builds a little.

Its really as simple as they advertise. Wish I had a garage and I could have knocked it out in that amount of time. Took me about 4 hours including going into the gas tank and swapping the fuel pump and going to the hardware store for some new bolts.

Wrong, i bought an FITECH, and after months of tunning, wiggling and calling tec, with no good results, Went back to my Holley 750 CFM and it runs Great!. If you know how to maintain and tune a carb, you are good, Btw, i hate the fast efi fast idle too, sucks..

It depends on how good you are with a carb. If all you want is to turn the key and go then its a great kit. But if you want it to be perfect and you drive your car hard “not just WOT” drag race stuff. Then I would look into a different kit. The Fitech just doesn’t have the R&D time to back up there products yet.

Hi brother. Just a question. Does EFIs just fit exactly (bolt holes, opening diameter, etc) where the carburetor is removed from ANY engine? In other words, are carburetors sizes and mounting standard like house hold mains sockets? I do ask because I have watched a number of videos on how to swap carbs to efi and I have find none that warns on the mounting fittings or adopters or anything of that kind. I want to change my 1991 suzuki vitara carb to efi. hence I have been trying to learn how to. Thanks in advance.

Its a standard 4 bore intake. I believe there are two types but honestly I don’t remember what the other style is called. From my experience the standard 4 bore is more common.

Most v8 carbs on small blocks at least, use a standard mounting. The carter, quadrajet, edebrock, Holley, are all just about identical. Check your existing intake manifold and carb and look it up. They sell inexpensive spacers/adapters for any intake to adapt to these units (and competitors). Hood clearance can be a pain. Hardest part is the high pressure fuel system. Getting adequate pressure and volume, returns or returnless, integrated regulator or external, aeration in the tank, most efi driveability problems are due to inadequate fuel delivery. Carbs are more forgiving because they are low pressure and have a float bowl.

Sorry for the music, I edit with headphones and tend to turn it up a bit to much. Iv got about 1000 miles on the system on now and it works as advertised. I will admit though its more or less a trade from the issues with the carb to new issues. Cold starts are not fast and can't seem to tune it out of the system. Its never stalled once its running but it hesitates when it gets hot. Im sure I can get it running 100% but I could have gotten the carb to run 100% to so don't know if its worth it or not.

Sure. Need a suitable efi setup for it. High pressure fuel system, custom intake manifold, ECU, suitable injectors, a dyno for tuning, and lots of patience. Or find a donor bike that is already efi and adapt it to fit your engine.

Definitely but this car isn’t a “race car” id rather loose 20-30hp and keep dirt out of the motor keeping it healthy. Still making more power and torque then a N/A 13b.

How do EFI systems impact cold start, eg can you just turn the key like a modern car?

My cold start still needs a bit of tuning, right now when its below 40F it stumbles after it starts but that can be tuned on. Its the first winter with the system so I have not had a chance to work with the tune below 50F. Once I do it should work just like most modern cars.

I had a carter AFB 600 CFM vacuum secondary carb. Worked well with a more or less stock motor.

can you send me what wires you connected where? I have the same build FC w a 302. I mages fitech they just said I had gravity feed problems w the pump which is mounted under the rear bumper. it's getting pressure but the main line running to the fitech is bone dry and it is buzzing (fp) at key on.

You should be able to, the biggest issue with an older car is adding a fuel pump to the system that will supply enough pressure to make the efi work. As long as an electrical fuel pump doesn’t have to lift or suck the fuel an inline pump works great!
