Great video as always! I have this sweepy on my Shapeoko 3 and it has worked really well for me, i have done about 125 hours of machining since I bought it. It's not perfect but no off the shelf dust collecter is for every situation (too long, to short, to big to small ect..depends what you are making what the dust boot needs to be) but it has been great for general use. This works much better(for my needs) than the "Suckit dust boot" did mainly because it moves with the spindle so it is less likely to hit fixturing, touch probes and such, and bit changes are less hindered than with suckit, not to mention it is just $35 making it one of the cheapeat options out there. Magnet hold hasn't been an issue and it holds really well with the vac on (while working) but pops off easily for bit changes which is prefered. There was another comment about brissles being to stiff and making the z motor loose steps? Never happened to me and it is hard to imagine a machine that I mainly use for aluminum being overpowered by a stiff brush but who knows what thier exact set up was like so I can't say for sure that has never happened to anyone. Suction is always ok for me as long as the brush is touching the surface, if it overhangs the edge of the work piece or the cuts get too wide and deep it is not nearly as effective I'll admit, but all other dust shoes would have the same issue I imagine. Since the atachment slides up and down I can do about 1.5 or 1.75 deep before it gets in the way or isn't making contact which is pretty good for most of what I do. Overall a pretty good dust shoe, not perfect, but very good for the price, if you see something better let us know though. Please keep up the great videos! I am looking forward to what you do next.

Something I thought of during the wrap up, how much does the vacuum hold the bottom half of the collector on? Both in open air and when its close to material. Also your original dust collector is dangerous because my brain sees the hairs on it and thinks it looks like it feels cool and tells me I should put my hand in there

Great video. I am researching this for myself, and each person's situation is different, ... i.e. spindle shaft length, spindle diameter, spindle mount, etc., ...they are all different for each machine, so it makes it almost impossible to go with a non-customized product. Custom 3D printer shops can make stuff custom, but it is not transparent. Instead of brushes, you can use flexible clear plastic to gain some vision of the bit. The shoe needs to be wide enough that the brushes or clear flexible plastic sheet cut into strips at the bottom do not get caught up in the bit. Your brushes looked mangled after 1 use. They seemed to long, but the brush length is dependent on the bit length, and the width of the shoe. The entire thing is a big mess. Also, I liked how you measured the air flow at the end, and noted that the air flow is constricted in the channel from where the hose connects and the spindle. That channel is a bit small, and it is a hard 90 angle there and air does not like to make a sharp turn like that. I think the hose needs to some how go more directly to the bit, or at least make the chamber curved toward the bit. I like how you noted that the transparent plastic let you only see the spindle shaft but not the bit. If you had a flexible clear plastic skirt cut into strips at the bottom, I think you could see a lot more, but since the bit is spinning, you still can only see the cut (hopefully), but that is what we are really looking at anyway. This problem we are researching is a very complicated problem and it is almost impossible to fabricate something that is all transparent.

Thanks for the review! Could you post a link to the dual collection system you mentioned that goes on either side of the spindle? I’ve seen it on a few places but can’t ever find it, I’ve searched the forums too!

I've been meaning to show my dust collector, I'll try to made a video someday. It's nothing too special, just an oneida v3000 with 6" ducting.

What would happen if you allow some bypass air in the reducer. With large tubing the object is air moving not suction.

that was by intuition too. with that amount of restriction the fan motor is not running in its sweet spot by an means. a power meter at the fan helps a bit in terms of tuning, even the is not a linear correlation between electric consumption and generated suction power (delta pressure by volume per second)

I would thrown it back in the box and sent it back. I just designed my own and 3D printed it.

When the vacuum is on, it pulls the removable shoe a lot tighter. It’s designed to be easy to take on and off when you are not using it.

Robert, you should check out KentCNC for a really good quality dust shoe IMO. I have one myself and find it to be really good as long as it is lower then the bottom of the bit and your dust collector is powerful enough. It is a bit more on the pricey side but as stated really good quality.

@@RobertCowanDIY another vote for the Kent CNC one. It is what I put on our Avid Pro. The quality and design is good very good. You do need good airflow to run it.

I have been running Kent dust shoe on my Shapeoko 3 for 5 years! When I bought the shapeoko Carbide 3d wasn't making a dust shoe yet. Pro's, very well built, strong magnets, quality line brush! Con's, for an entry level machine it's a little big, it's a little pricey but given the build quality you are getting what you pay for so maybe not so much a con as it is what it is. For the machine in this video a Kent shoe would totally make sense.

Its called sweepy, because you need to sweep the floor after using it. Also my gripe with it is the brushes are too hard for the shapeoko. Some have mentioned that the power of z axis cant over come it and it skips steps. I prefer my suckit dust boot for the shapeoko

Yeah, I can definitely see that with the stock belt drive Z. You shouldn't have to upgrade your product to use an accessory from the same ecosystem.

In my opinion there are just too many things I'd consider unacceptable - especially having the 48 bucks in mind, they charge you for it. Thank you very much for the detailed review! I don't actually think the airflow path is necessarily too small, especially if you only have a shopvac. It's just extremely (!) poorly designed. I mean a hard 90° angle below the hose-connector?! Really?
@RobertCowanDIY
@RobertCowanDIY Год назад
Right? A lot of people are defending it pretty hard, but it's one of the worst dust shoes I've ever encountered. And one of the more expensive too.

I've got the sweepy 65, and its OK: but not outstanding. the smaller sizes do at least have good dimensional tolerance, Unfortunately, the maximum thickness of material that I can cut with dust collector on is 3/8 inch. This makes it pretty much useless for any real work.
@RobertCowanDIY
@RobertCowanDIY 3 года назад
Oh, bummer. I just need to sit down and design one that adjusts itself in the Z axis and has massive airflow.
@StevePotter

Why so negative? It worked great in your brief test. Yes, visibility could be improved (adjust its height). Don't complain about magnets until it does fall off for no reason.
@RobertCowanDIY
@RobertCowanDIY 3 года назад
In other tests, it did fall off. It's handing on by a thread, and that's really concerning for a CNC machine. It's poorly designed and there are many other better options out there for the same price or less.

@RobertCowanDIY
@RobertCowanDIY 2 года назад
@@custer175 I mean, it severely restricts airflow, the magnets are underpowered, the clamp mechanism isn't well thought out, and it's more expensive than other options. I waited for several months for this to show up and it was apparent the minute I opened the box that it wasn't going to work out for me. I don't feel like I was being unfair, I was just frustrated that it was poorly designed.
