Carbon Cleaning on a 146k Mile MK7 GTI  

Hey! Owner of that lovely Mk7 here. As an update, the misfiring actually ended up being from the intake cam phaser sporadically failing, still glad I got the carbon cleaning done though! Up to around 187k right now, COVID substantially slowed down my progress towards 200k

I've got 192k on mk7. I've cleaned the carbon twice, and each time it looked like the car in the video. I got misfires at idle. The dealer used crushed walnut shells to blast the carbon. It costs 800 dollars each time.

The valves and ports look nice though. Very pristine. What was the coolant leak. I'm chasing a very slow leak and from what I can see with an inspection camera, it is not the main water pump and thermostat or the aux electric water pump...

what did you clean it with?

i can't imagine my 145,000 Passat TSI will be much different.

Paul - with the water pump settlement, can you guys do the replacement on out of warranty cars or does that have to be done at a dealer?

How did you do that?

Goes to show you cleaning the carbon did nothing to help the customers original complaint.
