Figuring out the age of the mutilated remains found in the village of Wharram Percy would be stage one in solving the mystery. And archaeologists have a tool that can help them do just that: carbon dating.

I looked it up for anyone interested here is a quote from the paper. "Simon Mays, human skeletal biologist at Historic England, said: "The idea that the Wharram Percy bones are the remains of corpses burnt and dismembered to stop them walking from their graves seems to fit the evidence best. "If we are right, then this is the first good archaeological evidence we have for this practice. "It shows us a dark side of medieval beliefs and provides a graphic reminder of how different the medieval view of the world was from our own." The paper was written by the BBC for anyone who wants to know

Executed, drawn and quartered? Very popular in merry olde England.

It could be that these people were executed for some antisocial behavior. Today some countries are opposed to capital punishment.

To people who may be wondering what happened: Human bones excavated from a deserted medieval village in North Yorkshire show people mutilated and burnt bodies to stop them rising from the dead. Knife marks were found on 137 bones dating between the 11th and 14th Centuries, discovered at Wharram Percy. Experts said it was the first evidence of ancient practices to stop "corpses rising from their graves, spreading disease and assaulting the living". The study was conducted by Historic England and Southampton University. The village was abandoned when the land owner evicted the locals to turn the whole village into a sheep pasture site when cultivating crops was no longer as profitable compared to sheep. Source: BBC

Ritual sacrifice or they were like the people from North Sentinel Island we don't take well The Outsiders and we killed them all like the sentinelese and you wouldn't bury them with your own you just throw them with the other Savages is one of my thoughts that might be I guess that's 2 actually but I don't see this is that big of a mystery. The obviously were not part of the community and they had done something that upset the community whether this be Criminal Raiders or just the enemy I believe England has had a issuer to with other countries captured soldiers spy not that hurt you I figured why over such a period of time the same thing that's happening it's just like you know in America you execute a lot of people or you used to really get after it you would have people buried in unmarked Graves very much different looking right beside a Church that's beside her part of the prison so you would have people buried and your traditional Manor what were used to in North America then you would have the prisoners right beside their that would look almost as if they were just thrown in a pile so I'm sure that would confuse people in the future without context just like this is confusing us because we don't have the proper context

Who didn't know what carbon dating was?
@connor863
@connor863 4 года назад
It isn't so much that people don't know what carbon dating is (although some people might not know), but that they don't understand how it works. One popular misconception is that carbon dating is the only kind of radiometric dating, whereas there are a lot of different kinds of radiometric dating, used (sometimes in combination of each other) to find the ages of artifacts of different ages. Many people also don't understand the physics and mathematics behind radiometric dating. Unfortunately, some people might also deny the validity of using techniques like radiometric dating to find the ages of artifacts.

@@connor863 I agree. Especially the last point you commented. The sciences and mathematics are being discredited at an alarming rate. Thank you
