Carbon Tetrachloride from Old Fire Extinguishers

This is a relatively simple way to get carbon tetrachloride. Carbon tet is very expensive and difficult to acquire, this is a much cheaper method to get carbon tet. This carbon tet can be purified further with several other purification methods if a higher quality is desired. Large metal extinguishers have a better carbon tet content vs price compared to the pressurized cannister (and smaller metal extinguishers most likely). If the seal is still on you can pretty much know for sure that it hasn't been used and there is still carbon tet in there. You can ask any seller if they hear liquid moving around in it, since it should be pretty obvious. Though for many people the weight can be deceiving and they assume there is something in it while there is not. There are many different brands, while i was searching around i made a list for easier searching since the second hand sites search engines (and people's descriptions) won't show you all of them with 1 search. It also varies by country, USA will probably have more options.

That first extinghuisher was so clear! Amazing. I'm always amazed by the fact they just chucked a pure chemical into the metal cylinders. No additives or mixtures, not even like, weird stabilizers. Just straight carbon tet from the carbon tet factory
@Chemiolis
@Chemiolis 2 года назад
Me too, chemists from the past are something else... I was also surprised it was so clear, i think if there are no dents on the outside it won't be dirty. Also the liquid is very obviously present, but it is easy to assume there is something still in there just because it is so heavy like in your vid. Even the sellers sometimes assume it still has contents and then (accidentally but maybe on purpose) scam you :(
@ExplosionsAndFire

@@Chemiolis yes although it is a very strange scam. Do they have more value to the average person while filled? I suppose it is more 'authentic' to still be filled with the original liquid, but it's ignoring how toxic it is!

Honestly did not notice an obvious difference between empty ones and full ones in price. I think the seller assumes people only care about how it looks, but then again the market is not huge so prices are quite random. The clear one (which was also in good condition) was actually cheaper than the damaged and murky pyrene one.

I think that 3 antique fire extinguishers are rarer than CCl4.CCl4 is just $7 per 500mL here and it's easy to get but that fire extinguishers are not.

I Found a large amount of this stuff at an estate sale this past weekend. A little more than Half a U.S. gallon of it. It’s in a green glass tinted Jug with a Dymo Label saying “ Danger Poison” “Carbon tetrachloride” it was $3 I have no idea what the gentleman used it for god rest his soul. I bought it so the average person wouldn’t get hurt with it. Now it resides on my desk in a well ventilated room just sitting there. The cap has plastic underneath and a metal screw down cap over it. The cap is rusted but still sealed. I dunno what I’m gonna do with it besides make a period accurate lava lamp from the 60’s and 70’s.

I just read an old article where they compare lab grade carbon tet with 3 brands of fire-extinguisher liquids. Although the fire extinguishers contained over 80% CCl4, it was found that the manufacturers used additives to "prevent it from freezing". One brand used chloroform as additive, the second brand used a high boiling petroleum distillate ("mineral spirits'') and the third brand used a mixture of chloroform and turpentine. The turpentine additive, according to the manufacturer, had the additional intent to "prevent the escape of poisonous gases such as chlorine from the mixture when exposed to heat" but in practice this did very little good. The authors also noted that carbon disulfide is a common impurity in technical grade carbon tetrachloride.

A funny anecdote, in an early 20th century folder descriptive of hand fire extinguishers, the Fire Extinguisher Exchange (Cleveland, Ohio) states: "Carbon tetrachloride, the base of the liquid used in the one-quart extinguishers, strongly resembles chloroform in its physiological action ; it is not now used as an anaesthetic as several deaths are laid to its charge. Under heat it gives off chlorine gas. Its use is dangerous in confined spaces." Back in those days there have been a few deaths caused by people using CCl4 extinguishers to put out a blaze in a small, enclosed space, where the men were overcome by the fumes they inhaled, and died a few days later. When heated over 250°C in the presence of CO2, steam or rust, phosgene gas is generated. Non-fatal cases still caused painful damage to the respiratory tract which lasted for several weeks. It was not uncommon for people to collapse from inhaling fumes while operating these extinguishers in confined spaces and even when they were promptly moved to outside fresh air, they remained unconscious for several minutes.

I have one of those small pump style. It fits in the palm of my hand and it still has liquid in it but not much. I have heard it is good for cleaning spark plugs and years ago I believe this is what my dad used it to clean the carbon residue off of fireplace brick and stone faces.

You can also synthesize CCl4 by passing chlorine through chloroform under UV light
@mikegLXIVMM
@mikegLXIVMM 2 года назад
I'm interested in that also. I want to do kind of a DIY free-radical halogenation. I would use a quartz tube and a germicidal UV lamp. For carbon Tet, maybe I would start out with chloroform made by the haloform reaction (many videos here about that). Starting with chloroform, a minimum amount of chlorine would be needed. A video about this would be great!

@@danieleckart3103 Yes don't breathe the vapors since they are very damaging to the liver. If you can't bring it to waste management, empty it in a dish outside while staying out of the vapors (by not standing down wind). Then leave it there until it has evaporated, have it in an open space and don't stay close to it.

It is probably referring to the reaction between sodium and carbon tet using only shock, however it isn't very reactive , for a more energetic reaction potassium is better and also actually detonates more often.

It hurts to see a factory sealed antique fire extinguisher destroyed for a few dollars of chemical - it's like ripping out the wiring in a foreclosed building for scrap and claiming 'the house is worth almost as much without wiring as with it'. True, I guess, but it's a damn shame. The non sealed ones I understand as the value is in the originality, not the contents.
