God bless you Dr G. Your tutorials should be a compulsory requirement for Nursing and Medical School students. Unfortunately, the educators are callously obligated to protect their monetary bottom line. Main Point Made, Eat Proper Human Nutrition, and don't buy the so called keto friendly processed junk food, that big business is now trying to muscle in on and profit.
I have lost 76 lbs in 5 months doing TRUE low carb. I have spent a number of years constantly gaining because of going by "net" carbs. I have since learned that sugars and even "dietary fiber" are not what people should be depending on. I've done really well keeping my TOTAL carbs (not ever counting fiber on anything whether natural fruits and veggies or the occasional processed foods) below 25 (max 30), and including sugar alcohols. I think my biggest fail over the last couple of years was not knowing that sugar alcohols play a huge role in not being able to lose weight and just depending on the front of the box saying "net carbs". To actually lose weight, we have to learn what low carb really means when we shop. I eat a whole wheat piece of toast every morning with an egg, or some lean black forest ham and guacamole, and I KNOW that piece of Sara Lee Whole Wheat bread is going to cost me 12 of my total carbs for the day. I can eat a meat and vegetable for lunch and be totally satisfied, and I can even eat an apple to up my fiber to avoid constipation and still feel full after eating it. It's taken me almost 3 years to learn what low carb/"keto" really means. I've FINALLY been successful because of my determination to learn. I'm off of all medications except BP and thyroid now. Pretty sure I'll never be off my natural dessicated pig thyroid medication but I'm hoping soon, since I've lost so much weight, that I'll be able to start weaning off of my BP medication. I feel soooooo much more healthy now and sooooooo much more free because I took the time to learn what true low carb/keto means. Excellent video! I hope more that have struggled with this lifestyle like I have for so long, find this. It takes work to do this properly. Meat and veggies with some low fat cheeses have been lifesavers for me!
The big thing for me is that one day I go and buy a highly rated keto snack bar that's peanut butter and chocolate. Even eating 2 or 3 bars, I would be well below my net carbs or total carbs for the day. But made me crave more. I just eat meats, cheese, broccoli and spinach.
Big food really takes a good thing, markets it, and still sabatoges the consumers. People really need to learn to read the nutrition labels and research the ingredients in the products they consume. Keto snacks doesn't mean anything. It's a marketing label for them to make a profit. It is sad to me because there is a lot of naive people that count on just reading the label on the front of the box.
Just as drug dealers only care about how much money they make, KETO is a BRAND now. No concern about health, just show them the money. Whole food rocks!🥑🥬🥦🍖🍗🥩🧀
Keto products make a lot of money for the companies. I prefer sticking with real foods. I also worry about trying to create baked goods or other recipes using nut flours etc.
For me I originally achieved my weight goal by using Total Carb counts, along with 16-8 IF. Then I decided to implement and enjoy more food choices, with sugar content in mind, by just using Net Carbs. My overall low carb count by using Net Carbs remains the same number, but more to consume if I decided to. I haven't gained any weight back in over a year. I Experimented and fine tuned. Both choices have Worked for me. Thanks Dr.Becky 🫂 🇨🇦
Thank you very much Dr Becky. You are very good at explaining what the net/total carbs really mean. Well wishes and prayers to you, Dr Keith and your family from Canada. Have a wonderful day. 🥰
I've become a label reader now, I was a lazy label reader before. Many "protein bars" fooled me with bold carb levels but not healthy when looking at the fine print. Even my favorite yogurt ice cream bars. I would look at the 90 cals but not the double digit sugars. It's depressing but a reality
I wish the Authorities would clamp down in this sort of thing. As a diabetic, it's very important to know how much sugar I'm actually eating and so many companies now promoting "Zero Net carbs" products when in fact all they do is take something with loads of carbs and add fiber, claiming that one cancels the other out is crazy.
I am glad to hear that eating real foods, avoiding allulose, and avoiding sugar alcohols make the reasons for counting total carbs less compelling. Also, avoiding snacking seems relevant. To me net carbs may be a good way to determine which fruits to favor, e.g. berries are much better than grapes.
What an eye opener! It seems that I can't eat almond flour based treats (chaffles, keto buns, etc). Maybe, that's why I haven't been losing weight. If I really want to go low carb, I should just eat veggies and protein (and the odd fruit?).
You can still enjoy & make the basic Chaffles by simply beating one egg well, using any high fat shredded cheese (counting carbs of course). Sprinkle part of the cheese on the waffle maker add only 1/2 of the egg & sprinkle on more grated cheese on top then close the lid & cook like a waffle! Berries are the only fruit you should add back after you feel you can handle the sugar in them.
Dr Becky, I read about the carb/fiber differences between frozen and fresh fruits/veggies. Could you do a video regarding that? Winter time is coming and I usually veg out with soups.
Apparently in Australian nutrition labels Carbs already have the fibre removed from the carb total. So doing carbs minus fibre doesn't work as the carbs listed is already net carbs, but it doesn't say that. So I was choosing: high fibre protein powders based on the the least amount of difference between carbs and fibre, assuming that I would be getting the lowest net carbs even if it had a lot of carbs - since it only had a small amount _after_ I subtracted the fibre. After getting "negative" results I did a bit of googling and found a keto forum [so it's not a official govt page] that revealed that little quirk of nutritional details.
Probably 99% of comments I read are an absolute head-shaker, yours included! It's called, "Attention Seeking" Here's an idea, why not just eat clean and low-carb? OR, do you have to complicate matters for no apparent reason? Head over and see my simple, no-nonsense, blunt, and direct science.....OR, continue to complicate something that is common sense and extremely simple!
Well done. Great videos. Can you please make a video about Monk fruit sugar and all the new like sugar products on Amazon as an example and if they are healthy and if they increase insulin or not ? Thank you... Wishing you more success.
Thank you Dr Becky for always keeping it simple. The bottom line is to eat whole foods...the simpler it is the better. I have learned to read labels although I eat unprocessed foods..life is much easier that way. Do not look for substitutes or you will fall into marketing traps.
Thank you. I can't do aspartame as it spikes my blood sugar big time. I try and stay away from all artificial sugars. I try and use a Monk fruit/erythritol blend or Swerve if I do cook/bake with any.
I need a plan. I do not like fish I do not like to cook I am a diabetic uncontrolled. But I need something that is quick that I can just grab . Wish I had someone to talk to about this. And I love sweets.
Grab some lindel 70% - 85% cacao chocolate also, if you like salads, grab Romain salad mix, slice veggies, and grab some grilled beef, chicken and fajita precooked yummy! Toss it on top your salad. Get one carb tortilla shells, put some raw peppers and onions you are good to go…
Hi Dr Becky, thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make and upload all these videos. I am so grateful and thankful that there are people in this world who genuinely want to help us lose weight and stay healthy instead of these companies that sell garbage food!!
Hello Dr. Becky. What do you think about simple versus complex carbs? Also can I lose weight while still drinking my 1 a day latte? I am going to do the two 500 calorie meals a day intermitteny fasting you recommended in your other video. Are no sugar added herbal teas between lunch and dinner ok? Moreover, can I have the almonds as a snack between lunch and dinner? I'm after 50, perimenopausal and have Hashimoto. Ugh Thanks for the great and sensible plan. I hope it helps me. 🙏
The problem with using Total Carbs is that sometimes people cheat. If they set their intake limit at 25g fiber, 5g sugar alcohol, and 20g net carbs, that is the common 50g total carb threshold. However, it sometimes ends up as 50g sugar, 0g fiber, and 0g sugar alcohol and they still think that is on plan.
I learn something new from each of your posts, so thank you! My A1C is down to a 5.6 after an alarming 7.3 6 months ago. I also subscribe to '2 Fit Docs' and miss Dr. Keith. Of course we all hope he is doing well, but PLEASE, could you do a 2 Fit Docs vid soon?
Our America the greed in politics is taking its toll on our country The greed in food products is so sad Other countries ban a lot of the things that they allow here The labeling should be plain and simple that anyone should be able to understand Greed is poisoning our children Cereal one of the biggest moneymakers These companies convincing parents candy in a box is a healthy choice
If you are really going Keto then no processed foods at all, then you can calculate net carbs confidently. Not sure what food you could eat to keep below 20g total carbs if you are using Total Carbs? Thanks again Dr G; swift, succinct and informative as always.
Dr. Becky, I was watching another video of yours “how to lose 10 pounds in a month” you said eat beans, but you didn’t say what kind. I’m zero carb..what kind of beans? Kidney, baked, green, white, ? I thought that they are carbs and they turn to sugar! Can you please be specific? This would be a great place to add this information! Thank you!
Not dr becky, but beans have carbs and protein and fiber in them, so they are absorbed much more slowly than plain carbs like bread. Baked beans have added sugar, and green beans are the pod without the seeds - usually 'beans' means the seed part of the plant, which has the high protein content - so black beans, red beans, white beans, chick peas, split peas, black-eyed peas - any of the beans that you can buy dried.
The crave factor. Indeed. I refer to it as activating the launch sequence of your sweet tooth. You might know they would find a way to addict us, so their revenues don't suffer.
Keto is a dead end street because of carbs. Carnivore has been my way for 6 years now. I dont count carbs of course because there are none. But I also dont count CALORIES. I eat all I want , whenever I want... Down 200 pounds and currently 12% bodyfat. Carbs kill in my world.
I choose a low carb diet with 0 processed food ! Simple and easy. With real food I'm always in the right side, I don't have the time and the energy to focus on calculating net carbs , total carbs etc . Green salades with some olive oils, avocados , home made mashroom soup , omelets , meats, seafood etc make the math easy and simple 😋
