Head to head test of my original Kawasaki dirt bike carburetor against a new chinese replica carb and a new genuine Keihin PWK Air Striker using the resources we had available.
You don't want to know how to do the brakes on a KDX it is a rough rough rough experience mine took 2 days to finally get working right and $200 worth of parts good luck drilling out the caliper pins and good luck getting the master cylinder cleaned out properly so it will pump fluid properly... rough day
Great job, I was one of the guys that suggested not complaining about the Chinese carb and see if it works. You went above and beyond my expectations and made some great content. Keep up the great work, sub for life.
Thank you. I have tried to keep things as real as possible in these videos, and film the successes and failures. That's why I pulled out the camera when I was grumpy and made that video. Looking back at it, I do seem a little over the top, but it was the heat of the moment. I'm still glad I did it because It's an accurate snapshot of that pont in the project.
Yea I got all kinds of old bed railing laying around, and I'm about to buy a bike w/o a stand...if only some1 could've made a video to show me how to fabricate my own lol Although a few times through the vid, I grasp the basic structure, tho mine will probably look much different, if I weld it haha Great videos man found Jenny's garage about 5 days ago and have watch at least 5 a day picked up some useful info along the way
davidbrennan5 the emulsion tube is a non replaceable part. You can go with the leanest (biggest diameter) needle and it won't fix the inevitable of the emulsion tube widening even more.
@@cjcruz7965 You could have removed the emulsion tube from the Chinese copy and done the rebuild. I'm sure it would have been fine. I run a lot of knock off carbs on my old Hondas and 212 cc engines, no issues.
@@cjcruz7965 how do you figure totally replaceable on that carb and differing size diameters call it a needle jet maybe parts guy dont know what you mean by emulsion tube
This is one of the most entertaining AND educational channels on RU-vid. You guys are great! I have always envied talented mechanics such as yourself and I think your wife is truly a gem. I'm cracking up the whole time. Keep the videos coming!
Back in the day ( 70's to late 80's as far as I know) every back yard bike mechanic would use bits of old guitar strings to clean carbs. if it had a hole in it then we were shoving hardened steel threw those brass and aluminum holes........we ruined a lot of bits and pieces and even whole carb body's........we didn't have the internet, we had the guy down the street who had a friend who had a cousin who knew everything and it's what he recommended...... and everyone was doing it from the Harley guys down to the mini bike kids.......at least we didn't eat laundry soap
The much older, better known trick is using old throttle cable strands since there were far fewer musicians than bikers. Must be a regional thing. Old car guys bought and used guitar strings for cutting out used auto glass (held between vise grips) which works well with practice, but every biker had used cables to cut up.
Copper strand of wire softer than brass if you think your gonna hurt shit your wire size is most important dont use brute force use WD or solvents seafoam cleaners magnification and patience light hands inside around and on carburetor
You joke around like you are not Sirius, but in fact you are very smart and your creative experiment and measurements are scientifically sound. Smart and resourceful work. pleasure to watch. Interesting results and conclusion. You did a lot of work for this video. Much appreciated.
Awesome videos sir!!! I’m a huge KDX fan. They’re great bikes. I’ve had both a 91 and I currently own a 02 220. As one motor cycle fan to another if you ever get around to swapping the crank seals on that engine I wanted to pass on a little knowledge I’ve picked up along the way. Kawasaki made a tool to wedge between the counterweights that keeps the crank squared up as you put the cases back together. Factory guys told me that they did not actually use this tool putting the engine together in the factory when they built the bikes. This info came from factory race team crew chief back in the late 90’s. He said the best way to wake up a Kawasaki 2 stroke was to true the crank or put a new one in but to use this tool. I had an issue (my failure to put the air box back together correctly after putting new top end on the engine) with my 91 that resulted with a large amount of sand going through the bottom end. So after a second new top end and a crank the thing ripped way harder on the top end. I’m sure you can use you Macgyver skills to make or find this tool and I’m sure you can figure how to correct the runout on original crank when you get to doing the main seals. I’m sure you’ll do them one day but I wanted to pass that knowledge along. I really enjoy your videos. Please keep it going.
Absolutely great! You brought up a number of issues that I would not have thought of on my own. I am equally impressed that you were able to get your wife to participate - she's a keeper!
You could try making a nitrogen generator to run it on. Maybe you could connect it to the 12v output and see if it could create it's own gas. I don't think that's how physics work but you could try it. And if not you could use a solar panel or something.
Yeah I was thinking about using a solar panel to make HHO and then running that in a gas engine, it will take a lot of solar power but i think it would be cool to be able to run a gas engine off of solar power :)
Okay, this is about the 30th video of yours I've watched. And admittedly, when I first started your series on the Honda Trail 90, I thought to myself that this guy's videos are going to be filled with nothing but a bunch of corny dad jokes and eye-roll inducing one-liners. But you've completely won me over! I find myself laughing out loud at you and your wife's incredible chemistry, charm, and humor. Thanks for creating such fun, entertaining, and informative videos. Keep them coming, because you have a new fan here!! Great job, both of you!!
I would kill for 50 degree weather! Here in sunny northern Ohio, we were sitting at a warm 5 degrees at midday. I just started school about a week and a half ago for a degree in Welding, though I hope to expand into small engine work, and I absolutely love your guys channel. Keep up the good work!
Wow at the end you finally figured it out. I had the same problem with my tapered needle and forgot to put the clip in the correct slot so it wouldn't travel all the way into the emulsion tube.
I use chinese knock off from time to time for small engine repair, 70% of the time their carburetors work fine, both 2 cycle and 4 cycle. The reason the chinese ones jet was different size , is so it's not just like oem for legal ressons. I bet if that carburetor could have been adjusted a little richer , it probably been good. Good video btw
Same I prefer the Chinese tecumseh carbs with the adjustment screw on the bottom. Cheap easy and when fall times comes I order them in bulk easier nd quicker than cleaning a carb.
Here in brazil, you have 3 options: get a NOS genuine, for an exorbitant price; get a rebuilt one, made like a frankenstein of rebuilt parts; and my favorite: get the cheapest knockoff you can find and throw genuine parts at it (needle valve, jets, whatever cheap genuine parts you can find).
You are getting there, man. Good work. Carb improved. What's next? It's about wheelie:30 by my watch. And way to keep the commentary honest, camera girl. You can't have people afraid to leave the house for fear of running into a pack of feral KDXs.
THOSE JETS ARE ALL WRONG!!!! So is the needle clip position. Start with 42-45 Pilot jet and a 155 Main jet. I used a 42. As far as the needle I used a Sudco CGK 017.018 they also make a DGK 017.030. Most guys use the CGK one though, it has the best overall performance. Google the needle clip position. I can't remember the best spot. Sudco sells everything. You will have to change it up a little depending on altitude.
It's amazing what the right jetting will do in a bike. On my rm250 it was running wayyy too lean so I popped the right ones in there and now that engine purrs
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ASSEMBLE YOUR TEST! I really appreciate your assessment. I was just about to buy the lower priced "Mikuni 45mm HSR" on ebay. Your video has saved me a world of grief that I am certain would have arrived with the ebay unit. I noted the level of anxiety you demonstrated in the preceding video the day your China carb arrived after opening the box. At least you were fortunate to have had a quality dealer. Again, Thank You Rachael Jaime
Learned AND had fun watching you two. I can see why she loves you, and you her! Humor and playful fun makes everything better, from marriage, to motorcycle repair! Thanks from the Oregon coast, where there aren't too many dirt biking days unless you love being muddy and wet!
Jennies Garage .... did not want to see you building that stand..... but then you did lol I appreciate you t least sped through it.... I'm drunk so inpatient hahaha your fine... I love your
Your vids are the best out there! Always learn something from you. Not to mention you and your wife are the best combination I've found on the interwebs! Keep the vids coming because I know we can't get enough.
I just have a question.. what do u do for a living. Cause you are one smart guy!! You have genius ideas for fixing things , you come up with all kinds of ideas like that measuring device with the funnel.. that was genius. And u refer back to the generator video that was a very hard and complex fix.. well to ME it was.. But your a very smart guy I'm just curious as to what it is you do for a living. You may not reply I've yet to get a reply . Anyways stay blessed. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks for the compliment. It's hard to answer that question. Right now I'm trying to find a new direction. To be less vague though, I have worked in construction, real estate, and sales at different times.
I have one question for the creator of video. Did both of the new carbs stop the excessive smoking from the bike? It seemed that you implied that it smoked alot previously but hard to tell from footage
MAN, I don't do what you do, I don't want to do what you do, I dont even understand much of what you do - but I can't quit watching! You and your wife have great chemistry and your vids are cut & edited very well. Keep up the great work!
That's a nice finish nailer. I think I would like to get one. Oh wait someone just recently stole my air compressor. I truly hate thieves. Great video I have enjoyed them for the past five to six months starting with your portable generator rebuild. I do truly enjoy the banter between husband and wife. Thanks
I realize you really would like to know which carb gives the better performance and/or fuel economy. But to do that, each carb has to have the exact same jets in place and a metered container that runs for longer then a few seconds. A long run after each carb has been turned for the engine and the engine warmed up, would offer a much better comparison. Too easy to make wrongful assumption with such quick tests like you're presently doing. JMHO But I do like to watch you make such experiments all the same.
Real world test is the best. When you buy something new the last thing you expect to do is take it apart. You'd did exactly as he did, swap it out and have fun
love that i found this series, currently rebuilding my 2003 ktm 200 mxc right now, ground up. top and bottom end rebuilt, frame head both side covers powder coated, rock guard on on the swing arm and sent suspension out to be rebuilt but hey paid 500$ for it in total but Ive hit the slump of waiting on parts but this series give me hope one day it will still kick over once again and it will rip fire roads at 60 lol
Its would be nice if you tried to mount some wheels to the bike stand, that way you have way better moveability (dont know if that word excists but it does now) Greetings from a dutch subscriber
Engine speed, load and fuel consumption, you've got it all. It's called a dynamometer engine test bed, home-made garage version. Making it amusing is the clever bit. Well done you two
Great video! I really appreciated the thorough test of each carb, and then seeing your guess for the issue being correct was very satisfying! Ready for the next vid :)
I feel these comments are falling of deaf ears but just have to say, you are classic! I’ve been watching your vids for 4 years and they just keep getting better. You would be a hit on a tv show about stuff like this. Keep at it man!
I am surprised by how much I enjoyed this silly, yet "serious" science video. What a happy couple. I wonder if making dinner is just as complex or if Jenny has that under control.
lol I'm dying. The wife is the best. If you don't watch the whole video your missing out on the funny stuff. Love the videos. Don't forget to question how much the sheller payed.
I'm spending a lazy Sunday afternoon in my bed and I roll over and pick up my phone and go to RU-vid . You may ask yourself, "self , why is he going to RU-vid?" Don't worry about it. But I Digest. I stumble across the 2 of you with the cow we project. And for some strange and bizarre reason I am transfixed watching the 2 of you. You're camera presence, humor, and just straight away tweaker ingenuity have me considering the 2 of you like watching a car wreck...you just can't stop looking. Easily an hour and a 1/2 is past and I'm still in bed . I've also subscribed to your channel and requested notifications of your ventures. Has anyone got the piston yet? Cause I will drive out there and dig it up right now if nobody has claimed that. The fin is my prize.
Was the needle noticeably leaner on knockoff?? How about pilot jet comparison? Would the keihin mainjet screw into the tube portion of the knock off?? Good video but not a very good full comparison imo
Watched your fake carb video by chance when it came out. By chance stumbled back to your channel this morning. Have been binge watching the past 2 hours!!! Can't get enough of you and camera girl... too funny and great content!!!
i think the most beneficial thing i learned from this vid was what it looks like to have a healthy relationship with your significant other! the experiment was bad ass, but i can only dream to have my wife be equally enthused about the project as i am, i mean shit, just having a good attitude while helping out is a major bonus! nice vid guys!
Jet drills (#60 through #80) are dirt cheap online. We used to drill jets in the 1980/90s to cure factory lean conditions and it's easy as it could be. Clamp bit in visegrips, spin jet between thumb and forefinger to drill, when bit breaks through stop twisting then stroke it back and forth a couple of times to debur.
Very good video indeed. I have been fighting with a kdx carb problem for months and your video here helped me to figure it out at last. I just got one of those Chinese knockoffs and have been wondering about such things as this was about. You saved me a lot of work and showed me some details about the kdx and carb that I have yet to ever see. You are very good at finding solutions to get measurements. You can work in my shop anytime.
