I'm pleased to feature Jeremy Griffith as a guest teacher on 52Kards this week. He teaches a great utility move known as the Kick Back Ditch! This is a move that allows you to secretly lap a card. This can be used to make a card vanish, change into a different card, or to just steal a desired card away from the deck.

I don't watch this videos to know the secrets of magic or to learn. I watch it because i admire the ability and ingenuity that magicians have (as a result of their dedication). That's the aspect of magic i enjoy and is fantastic.

This also makes for a good 'accidental' colour change (as in: the card supposedly changes on its own accord, rather than the magician making it change). Under the guise of cutting the card (face-up) into the middle, for example. Just do the double lift variation mentioned in the video, but only place the top half on the table as if doing a table cut. When you go to place the bottom half (in your hand) on the tabled half, you realise the card has changed.

If Only I was more of a Table Magician this is definitely a nice tutorial! the only thing is, I wouldn't know what to do with a card in my lap. But if I find myself in a situation where I can perform this move, I would. I'll improvise as I go. As magicians we are, we should be able to improvise at anytime. #GreatTutorial

I know that i'm a little late for this but anyway. I can see this trick/illusion work in front of a camera, but could it work in public/in front of someone? Wouldn't the spectators just see the card falling down, if you do not have a table in front of you?

Hey Jeremy (and Assad), I don't have an instagram account so I'll respond here and hope you'll notice it. First of all I'd like to say that this is a great tutorial, thank you very much for the clear explenation. I'm wondering if you have any hints or tips for continueing from that position though, with the card on your lap. You can just get it with your hands, but do you have any ideas or oppinions on certain deceptions to do allongside the grabbing of the card?
@Mattdelux07
@Mattdelux07 9 лет назад
Jeroen O. personally when i lap cards, objects etc. i often have something on the table to move. So for example, if i lap a card i would either A) Hand the the deck to the spectator at my farthest left with my right hand (being that i retrieve the card with my left hand) in order to cover my left hand. or B) will have the the deck box or something of the sort in the top left corner so i can reach for it with my right hand and move it to my right side while i reach for the lapped card with my left. but i always keep my elbow of the hand retrieving the card on the table. just some things that i do.
@AngelusAnimus
@AngelusAnimus 9 лет назад
Jeroen O. Great question. I have two things that I like doing, the first is palming the card against my lap and then "pulling it" from my inside breast pocket of my jacket. The other option is that I mercury fold the card, classic palm it and finish it with a Tommy Wonder style revelation "Card in ring box"

But what about the sound the card makes while it slides off the deck? As I am practicing it right now it seems like a huge tell. I guess you could cover it up by speaking but it is a distinguishing sound really .

@koegon
@koegon 7 лет назад
Jayne Farrimond misdirection and practice are the two most usefull derails to cover it well;)
@mrcommonsense9145
@mrcommonsense9145 7 лет назад
Jayne Farrimond the absolute key to sleight of hand is having the genuine and false look identical and any move purely coincidental, for all my lapping moves i have changed my behaviour and actions such that they are always done from either a cut or setting the deck down to the pad/table. And even when ive no need to lap my actions and behaviour are still the same in how i cut to the table or place the deck down or move the case out of the way engage and smile at the spectator etc. My style has always been essentially to just have a conversation i never sell it as magic or use stories. Thats me. Be yourself too dude. I don't much like harry lorayne personally but i believe he said even if they don't see the move if they suspect one you failed... which i think applies.
