Well that was wonderful. Three of our summer camps are cardboard themed. I'm going to share your work with my teachers and students!

Please do! That sounds like a wonderful summer camp! There are so many cool things you can do with the medium. It’s such an accessible introduction to sculpting!

Wow! that's one mean-looking glue gun. I've never seen a battery-operated glue gun before, and I have several Ryobi power tools. I love the video production. Especially the narration.

Thanks, yeh it’s nice to be cordless when you can. And to have 7/16x12 glue sticks ends up saving you time and money when you’re using at much as I do. I buy the glue sticks by the lb or case.

Recently, I’ve been saving-up material for papier-mâché, and suddenly RU-vid is recommending paper and likeminded-crafts.... CONSPIRACY!!!!!! Anyway, during the first lockdown, I’d go walking in the downtown and kept seeing all the double-corrugated cardboard from all the shopping folks were doing at big box stores and mail orders - and I couldn’t touch ANY of it to bring home for fear of ‘ambient transmission’. Gol. But, my stash is still quite the sight to behold. I don’t know my project yet, but it will be a doozie!!
@justinkingdesigns314
@justinkingdesigns314 3 года назад
Ive dove in dumpsters and picked up cardboard from new restaurants. It’s amazing that you’ll develop a preference for a certain brand or type. After a while, you’ll discover a cardboard that has just the right flexibility and just the right strength that suits you. Then you’ll become a snob and only want to use that. I have a toddler and he loves playing with cardboard and making things. I wince a little when he grabs from my favorite stash but he’s 3 and super cut so there’s definitely some crayon marks here and there on my pieces. Happy making!

Your art is SO cool!!! Loved watching this process video. Hopefully it’s the first of many Justin, because I cannot wait to watch more! Honestly, I was scanning around your work table to see if I could catch a glimpse of other works-in-progress of yours, and I spotted a small bird (top right of your bench) which sparked my curiosity. Feeling inspired to create after watching, and I’m sure you’ll inspire many more. I’ve never subscribed to such a new channel. I’m thrilled to have found you at the very start and excited to follow your journey as your channel grows.

I am not a hunter but I love animal mounts. I really like your work. You make it look so easy but I am sure that it took a long time. I have done a lot of art in steel and I find it hard to get thing proportionate so they look life like. RU-vid, Ultimate Paper Mache, would love your animal at this stage. She would cover and paint it to look real. You did a nice job and I wish that I had your skill. You did a nice job on the video as well. Thanks!!!!😃😃😃😃
@justinkingdesigns314
@justinkingdesigns314 3 года назад
Thanks, it takes practice for sure, but it’s relatively quick to fix proportion mistakes. I’ll show you how on the next video. It’s never fun to redo something but when you spend so much time on these it’s definitely worth it. I used to do papier mache and paint it to look like bronze. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

I appreciated watching this for some reason. I don't do cardboard taxidermy, but I like an artist that is focused and dedicated to seeing their vision through. It came out really nice. A lot of work. And this is the first time I've seen a battery powered glue gun. So - did you mount this directly to the wall? If so, that's some pretty intense commitment there. How would you move this to another wall??? Also, do you ever paint them or is your thing the transformation of the cardboard itself?
@justinkingdesigns314
@justinkingdesigns314 3 года назад
Thanks, it’s on a French cleat. I take a 1x4 and rip it on a 45. So it’s a little beefier than those metal ones you buy in the picture hanging aisle. I paint quite a few of them. Usually I know if I am going to paint before I get started but there are times where I decide not to or even regret painting after the fact. It doesn’t always add to the work. Part of the attractiveness is that you can tell it’s cardboard.

Excellent video tutorial, How do you finish the surface?
@justinkingdesigns314
@justinkingdesigns314 3 года назад
Depends on what I am going for. Sometimes I use spray paint and other times a clear polyurethane. I’ve also used laminated patterned paper to the cardboard prior to building. Floral prints tend to look really nice.

Awesome demonstration. Do you use photos for reference.?
@justinkingdesigns314
@justinkingdesigns314 3 года назад
Thanks, yes most of the time. St. Louis has a great zoo so sometimes I’ll take a camera and try to get some shots but for the most part I just look at images on my iPad. Then once I like a pose I usually sketch out how I am going to simplify it a bit. You’re obviously not going to be worrying to much about wrinkles, eyelashes etc. you kind of have to pick what is going to be the most effective to have, as far as muscle structure or features and just try to get those things right. The angle of the eye, it’s position and size is a lot more important when you lose the other features available to you demonstrate with this medium.
@CONEHEADDK

For those here to "industrial spying", if you want/need to not reload the gun all the time, you can just glue them together. Just don't make lumps, that it can push in, but a little distance is not a problem. And you can use a 220v regulater, if your glue is to hot for some tasks.

It’s a waxed canvas. The important part is the shoulder straps that distribute the weight across your back instead of directly on your neck.

@@justinkingdesigns314 I was referring more to the surface and lack of attention to the over-lapping of the material... it looks like segmented armor. I see a lot of praise in the comments, maybe they sell well as is? But looking from a “long term investment” angle, you could go further and even charge more if they “look” nicer. The more I would put into my art, the better the clients felt about opening their wallets... with your sculpt here, the face and general “feel” is graceful and impressive. Imagine if you just butt-registered those segments and cleaned up the raw, exposed edges? I think you could do even greater work. Or just make dragons... folks love dragons, ya know. 😉
