Thanks for including my Forest of Enchantment Tarot! Cardstock is so subjective. I can't riffle shuffle to save my life, so it doesn't matter much to me, but I know some people are passionate about it. All I ask as a deck creator is that people work with a deck before condemning the cardstock. I've seen some reviews of decks right out of the box that say "I can tell this deck won't hold up very well." The fact is, thinner stock doesn't necessarily mean it's flimsy or cheap -- try it for a while before passing judgment.
@DawnMichelleTarot

I agree cardstock is subjective, for me it's all about if I can shuffle it. I like thinner cardstock because it means I can riffle. I'm pretty hard on my decks and my thinner decks still hold up to the abuse I throw at them lol. 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

i totally agree with you! thinner csrdstock is a preference for me, it makes the whole experience so much better. i have decks with such thick cwrdstock that my hands hurt when riffle shuffling 😂 i love your decks cardetock - its just perfect, in my opinion. flexibilbe, easy to work with ❤️

We work with Tarot so similarly - and my shuffling time is my focus time too. I also find that shuffling and cardstock are both part of the sensory experience of working with decks. I really do want to do a VR on this subject at some point!! Such a great tag.

It really is, I love that Casper opened it up not to just what kind of cardstock we like but why it matters to us. I think it's an important part of the discussion that open gets overlooked. 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

Dawn Michelle, thank you so much for doing a VR. You're completely spot on -- I don't want to think about shuffling when I'm doing a reading. Bad cardstock tends to have plenty of jumpers; I want a deck that I can reliably shuffle so I know jumpers ARE a sign. I also meant to talk about that at the beginning of my video (because it's arguably the most important) but LOL I only realized I forgot midway through and I really didn't wanna redo my video. I appreciate that you got to that point in the video. I didn't expect some of these decks here!!
@DawnMichelleTarot
@DawnMichelleTarot 3 года назад
I just love listening to shuffling, it just makes my heart happy! I didn't think about that with jumpers, that's a really good point. I think too often creators get caught up in cardstock feel and forget that we need to be able to actually use these decks! Thank you so much for this tag, I think it's actually a really important conversation to have and you gave us an opportunity to do that, and in a fun way!! 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

I love the artwork of the Textures Tarot, but yeah it's pretty useless as a working deck. I still pull it out from time to time, but I don't use it near as much as I would if it has some useable cardstock. Such a shame as it's a stunning deck. 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

Dawn-Michelle, thanks for the thorough review. ♥️ I *do not* riffle shuffle, and can always tell those that do, from the bow/ bend in the cards. Unless they are conscientious about flattening the curve by reverse action some of the time. (As you and Casper do!) Anyway... I'll have to think about my favs... I *do* enjoy the sexy feel of rose petal finishes. ♥️ #staywell everyone.

I think part of it is that all my first decks were mass market with standard cardstock. Shuffling and usability never crossed my mind back then because I didn't have access to anything that wasn't just standard cardstock meant to be shuffled. Now that I've experienced so many more types, I've realized how much of an important part of my process it is. 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

I feel like I am generally just bad at shuffling, so I can't blame the cards. But consequently the cards I enjoy working with the most seem to have thicker card stock and are therefore more difficult to shuffle. Card stock doesn't stop me from working with a deck though and I agree, I also love Llewellyn card stock!

I like Lewellyn cardstock too! They shuffle so beautifully. There are so many indie decks I'd love to have, but I just don't use decks that I can't easily riffle shuffle so I just say no. But it definitely causes some FOMO to combat and hold strong on that.

Love your videos! Love nice cardstock. Makes or breaks any tarot deck for me. It's a shame that quite a few tarot decks don't do the art justice. I find a lot of mass marketed decks, like most of Lo Scarabeo, need to up their production quality. AGM are among my favorite cardstock and quality for mass produced decks. Indie decks take the reign. Baba Studios card stock is sumptuous and I like a lot of U.S. Games. I love glossy for certain decks, but a nice satin finish feels luxurious lol. I can handle my decks all day long; the sound they make, the feel, the smell....lol.

All I want in life is for my decks to be manageable in size and have pro playing cards stock (bendy with a core), that’s all lol I’m definitely more forgiving with personal decks, but for working decks you gotta be able to shuffle! Faves: Baba Studios stock, Pagan Otherworlds (despite the size), SKT, US Games standard, and yes, Lewellyn. Least faves: Connected and Free Oracle, Modern Witch, and A Yogic Path. I can even deal with the size on Work Your Light and Starseed because the stock is nice and I can shuffle them sideways (Ethony style), but the Yogic Path is just “why?!” 😂

Shuffling is how I judge cardstock too! My hands aren't big enough to even get around a Llewellyn deck comfortably so I corner shuffle everything. This helps on some larger decks that others have trouble shuffling. But if I can't even corner shuffle a deck, then I get cranky lol

I personally consider myself a bit of a cardstock snob. I have the indie deck of the Light Seer's tarot but wish it were a little thinner and that's why I also purchased the mass-market version. Unfortunately, that cardstock was a big disappointment for me. Now I have two decks that I love the artwork but resist using because of the cardstock. I am a fan of linen cardstock, though depending on the thickness of the card, it is unlikely to hold up well over time with regular use. Shuffling is a BIG part of connecting with the cards for me. I don't want to be distracted by making sure the cards don't stick or slip while shuffling. I love a good riffle, bridge, and overhand (horizontal) shuffle. Card size also plays a factor as cards that are too large can be hard to hold and therefore distracting. In my perfect world, besides a yummy cardstock for riffle shuffling, a size about 3/4 - 1 inch smaller than standard tarot would be a nice compromise. However, I am okay with larger cards for oracle decks. Great video, thanks!

The same thing happens with me and my Prisma Visions. I love the silver gilding, but the cardstock is too thick and heavily laminated, since it has this glossy finish. I also have to divide it into several piles to be able to shuffle it XD. However I'm grateful for that lamination because once my Eight of Wands fell off while I was shuffling and the card bent. I screamed. Thankfully the lamination is super strong and the thick cardstock meant it survived, it didn't break or anything ant it's barely noticeable on the front. However I always set it aside when riffle shuffling. I only have two tarot decks so it hurt my soul haha. The SKT VItruvian (my other deck) has beautiful cardstock. If all my future decks can be like that I'm happy.

The best card stock on an indie deck I have come across is the Playful heart tarot. All the indie decks you showed - too thick or too big. One can see that you manage to get your hands around and shuffle but it didn't look like a comfortable shuffle (compared to the AGM Müller or TWU). I say this a lot and I will say it again - tarot cards are increasingly being produced for collectors and not for users. All the thick matt big cards madness, great to have it on a shelf, maybe shuffle it (somehow) a couple of times in a year but a nightmare for regular daily use (given that one can use it at all). It's such a pity and extremely vexing that esthetics of a deck are deemed to be much more important than usability. And no one really talks about it, especially with indie decks we pay so much money for usually. People seem so afraid to "criticize", really frustrating.
@DawnMichelleTarot
@DawnMichelleTarot 3 года назад
I never thought about it that way, but that is a good point! I want to be able to use my decks, not just sit them on a shelf and look at them. I express that frustration every time I get my Moonchild out. I love it, but it's a pain in the butt to work with. I keep hoping maybe someday it'll come out mass market so I can get some USEABLE cardstock! 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

Hi Dawn Michelle! Well, I don't own any of these decks, so I can't comment on them....and I don't riffle shuffle. I wouldn't call myself a card stock snob. I collect older decks....pre all when card stock was a "thing". Those decks are usually on stock that's more like playing cards. I never really pay any attention to card stock . Of my newer decks I like the cards from Uusi, Baba, M. M. Meelen, as well as some mass market. I think my most disappointing decks is the 1st edition of The Brady Tarot. It's beautiful but I swear it's printed on a cardboard box. It's so thick and stiff. I prefer thin and flexible cards. Thanks for the walk through!
