50% 1

The last three years of my Careel 18 which was originally bought to teach my kids and wife how to sail to it unexpectedly becoming a project boat. 90% done and still 70% to go. This slide shows from buying Second Wind as an old and well used trailer sailer to something a little more presentable. Culminating in competing in the Careel State and Nationals for the 2020 50th Anniversary of Careel’s going into production.
Whilst we may not have scored that well in the Nationals, we had just the best time with the nicest people you could meet and still one of the best Class Associations going. The Careel 18 is a native of Australia, built right here is Sydney with a production run of just under 400 boats making the Careel one of the most popular production trailer sailers ever produced in this country and still a great little boat.

Lovely looking Careel. My father had Careel 95 Which he had David Rose build back in 1973. I grew up on that boat with 2 Whitsunday cruises, Clarence river and virtually lived on Port Stephens/Myalls and my home body of water Lake Macquarie. Hope you have a ball with yours. They certainly are the little boat that could!!

Hi Mark, Thank you for the kind words. I too grew up through the 70's (in Sydney) sailing and several of my school friends were Careeler kids, I always like them. Due to COVID the Grafton to Iluka Clarence River cruise for Oct is postponed but I am looking forward to doing that, love Lake Macquarie, itching to do the annual Myalls cruise and next year the bay to bay. Log onto the Careel web site as it is the 50th anniversary and the association is calling for all Careeler's old current and Careel kids to join in the celebrations. Whilst not to the same size as yesteryear it's still a great association.

2 years notice and a reminder every month from 6 months prior, she's a good sport but I feel your pain. I bought the boat to teach the kids sailing. If there was a category for lounging around and letting Dad do all the work, they would be future Olympic hopefuls. All fun though.

Hi Wilsnich02 Lovely story about your boat. I've got Careel 18 sail nbr 10 from 1970 and going through much the same journey as you are. I didn't know that there was an actual Careel 18 society or nationals or any of that stuff seems as if I have some catching up to do. All the best on the last 70% what a great looking boat you have.

Hi Thomas, thank you for the reply and WOW you have one of the very original boats. They are a great little boat that still has a very active and supportive Class Association. You need to sign up as a member (Sydney $50 elsewhere $30) and get access to the monthly newsletter and Facebook pages and more. There is always a good contingency of Careel's at all major trailer sailer events like the Marley Overnight Race in Victoria and the Bay to Bay in the Great Sandy Straits Qld and elsewhere. On the 4th Oct a number of Careels are cruising the Clarence River for 6 days which is a real hoot. It was always said when you bought a Careel you weren't just buying a boat but you were buying yourself into an extended family. log onto careel.com/ and on the front page click onto the membership application...... I don't think you will be disappointed. Kind Regards Nick

Hi Keanu, congrats on your purchase, do you know what the sail number is which is the build number. There should be a builders plaque in the aft port locker that will give you the build no. Join the Careel Association as they are a great source of info.

Great videos thanks wilsnich02 and a great restoration job too. They are great little boats and much fun for us learning a lot more about sailing. I have a Careel 18 Mk III, sail number 461 built in 1989 named Karloo. She was in very good order when I bought her in 2016, thankfully I didn't have all the work to do that you did. I would like to get a convenient and effective mast raising system. Did you make your system, if so could I get some details from you please? The sort of info I would like is the dimensions of parts and means of fitting stay poles to the mast sail track. The Careel Association you mentioned is that the CCYA?

Thankyou for your comments, I will probably upgrade at some stage in the future to a Mark 3, the extra 5 " head room makes quite a difference. I had a stalwart of the Careel Association Vern Mould make up my mast raising system. In the last 3.5 years since I have had the system I would have put the mast up and down at least 40 plus times and always by myself with no assistance. Happy to discuss, best to contact me through the Careel Association ( yes it is the CCYA) or Careel Facebook, I am C53. Careel Cruising Yacht Association @Careelers · Community. Kind Regards Nick.

@@wilsnich02 Thanks Nick, I had read a description of Vern mould's system on an old Careel forum but couldn't open the photos attached, so it is very handy to have your video. Regards Mike
