I heard a story about the Neal Broten fight with Wayne Gretzky. After the fight he's sitting in the penalty box with Willie Plett. Dave Semenko skates over and Broten is thinking shit I'm in trouble now. Instead Semenko looks at Plett and says "now you're dead". Plett turns to Broten and says "Thanks Neal"

Attended the Broten Brothers' Hockey camp sometime around 90 in MN. Remember that one all these years later. Aaron and Paul joking with all us kids throughout the drills and Neal showing up at the end each day just to hang out with a bunch of squirts or peewees - whatever we were at that age. Great memories of a childhood hero. Need a Dino Ciccarelli recap!

Just a few thoughts to add about Neal Broten. His 105 point season was the FIRST 100 point season for a U.S. born player. Besides scoring the Cup winning goal in 95. He scored the NCAA winning goal laying on the ice, his freshman year after being tripped (great goal). One reason for inconsistencies in Minnesota for the Northstars was the constant coach changes. Glen Somner was Lou Nanne's guy, but Glen had a drinking problem for years and was in and out as coach and Nanne made some horrible hires as coach. Perfect example is Bobby Smith; after his franchise record 115 point season, the next season Bobby isn't even on the power play because the new coach hates him. Instead of firing the coach Nanne is forced to trade away Bobby Smith.....then Nanne fires the coach anyway later. Back to Broten: Mike Modano was told by Bob Gainey to watch Neal Broten and said "that's how you play hockey". Gainey (a hof'er) knows his stuff. Also Broten did play with both his brothers in the NHL. As you said he played one season in Minnesota with Aaron, but he also played with the youngest brother Paul the first season in Dallas until Neal was traded away to the Devils. Personal note: I got to meet Neal once years ago and he is one of the nice pro athletes I have ever met! Great video sir!

Followed his career from back when he and the Roseau Rams would make there annual trek to St. Paul to play in the Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament. From being a Gopher, Olympian, North Star and on, he has one of my favorite players. From what I’ve heard he’s one hell of a guy as well. A great representative of the state of hockey.

I remember watching Neal and his brothers play for Roseau in the Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament in the late 70s and thought he was something special. I think he had something like 115 points in less than 30 games for his high school in 1978. He has won an NCAA championship, The Hobey Baker Award, an Olympic Gold Medal and a Stanley Cup. Yeah, I'd say he was special.

In the 1995 playoffs, great leadership and charisma was brought to the Stanley Cup Champions by Neal Broten for the New Jersey Devils. Stephane Richer recorded 21 pts in 19 games, followed by Broten who put up 19 pts in 20 games. Long time Devil John MacLean registered 18 pts in 20 games, meanwhile. Claude Lemieux notched 16 pts in 20 games. Very balanced scoring, consistency, with everybody contributing and unselfish play allowed the Devils to capture the 1995 Stanley Cup. What a great acquisition Neal Broten was for Corey Millen. Richer led New Jersey in pts during the '95 Regular Season and guess who was 2nd? That's right - NEAL BROTEN!

He did have the 30th most points in the NHL during the 1980's. He also was a good defensive center which the only defensive stat they used in his era was +/- which isn't a very good gauge of anything but it's easy to keep track of and would put Neal as the 170th best defensive player of the 80's I believe. He also helped Scott Bjugstad(Irondale Knight alum) reach 43 goals in 85-86 which was 32 goals more than he would score in his next best season. And Dino had 44 on that impressive BBC line.

I certainly hope that he gets inducted at some point, if not as a player, than as a builder, being amongst the first notable American-born players, paving the way for future generations. As a player, he's one of only two (TWO!!!) to win an NCAA Championship, Olympic Gold and a Stanley Cup (Ed Belfour is the only other one). He still ranks among the top 15 in points for American-born players, he the the first American born player to score 100 points in a season, and won the very first Hobey Baker Award. He even came out of retirement in 1999 to represent the US during the Qualifying round in the IIHF World Championship, where he scored six points and three games to help them win the qualifying group. What a legend.

NHL rookie 98 pts. Then Stanley Cup loss to the Islanders. Wow!!!. In there he won hobey baker. After became first American player to reach 100 pts. Won only fight against Gretzky and later on scored the Another Cup loss to Pens. Game winner for Stanley Cup winning Devils.

Growing up near the Twin Cities, I was a huge fan of the Notth Stars and of Neal Broten. For the longest time I thought he should have been in the HHOF. After seeing his stats in black and white, I understand why he’s not. I never really noticed how inconsistent his production really was. However, one thing that sticks out to me was that he had a DUI the year he won the Cup in New Jersey. And he has had another one within the last few years. Maybe that had something to do with the inconsistency? Of course we can only speculate. Nonetheless, he had a solid career. And yes, I do remember the Electric Stars dancers lol

It’s tough to be a fan when the new owner threatens to move them every year until he eventually did. A lot of teams in the early 90s had attendance problems but the push to bring hockey to the south was big for bettman and the north stars jets and whalers fans paid the price.

Teemu and Alex had 76 goals, but there were still teams playing some semblance of defence, and the game was still physical without guys getting concussions all over the place, pre-instigator rule.
