California Brotherhood I’m willing to bet you aren’t in one of the groups of people who are discriminated against in all aspects of their lives for something they can’t control. Not to mention bullied, shamed, dehumanized, and potentially harassed/assaulted, beaten, or murdered. They’re told that ONE thing about them, something that they have as much control over as their height or eye color, not only defines them as a person; it’s such a negative thing that it will now be used as an adjective synonymous with anything shitty and awful. I can tell from your comment you’ve never had the compassion or empathy to put yourself in that person’s place, preferably BEFORE shaming them for asking people to treat them with the same amount of respect you expect from them and the rest of the people you come across. So, to understand why this behavior is offensive please try to think of it this way: if someone hates you so much that they use your name as negative slang, how would you feel about yourself and that individual person? Now amp it up and pretend our ENTIRE SOCIETY does it. I’m not sure what your actual name is so I’ll just use your user name abbreviated to CB because I have no desire to type that whole thing out over and over. “Omg, you like anime/DnD/Star Trek/My Little Pony/Dr Who/Etc and Whatever? That’s so CB!” or “Wait, you actually LIKE racist government officials because they say what you’re thinking?! That is CB!” or “Your wife/husband cheated on you? S/he’s a filthy CB!” You get my point here, I hope. When we make it ok as a society to use a type of human being as a joke or a bad word we are making it easier to treat them as if they are less than people. That slippery slope of casual disrespect and cruelty is how you end up with the Holocaust from WWII, or the internment camps that the US put our Japanese-American CITIZENS in during WWII, or the appalling use of African-Americans as slaves for hundreds of years in the southern part of the US. It’s also how we as a country refused to allow African-Americans to use the same bathrooms, hotels, schools, or pretty much anything despite them being freed American citizens, or refused to allow women to vote or own property. Right now it’s how we allow a wage gap where women earn on average 74% as much as men earn performing literally exactly the same jobs, commercial businesses are allowed to refuse service to non-white, non-straight, non-Christian, or pretty much any person who doesn’t fit the ‘normal’ societal image. As a race humans need to band together to make this world better instead of worse, or we won’t have a world to douche around in much longer. Thanks to anyone who actually read that entire soapbox speech. I understand everyone who went with TL;DR.

@@pambisugar8286 Though there are idiots who say dumb things and make people feel bad about themselves or something that happened to them, putting up too many buffers against pain is even worse. I’m 40... the prevalence of the words “gay” and “retarded” when I was growing up is ALARMING teachers, coaches many many parents would let those words fly with reckless abandon. I remember when a teammate of mine on the HS football team lost a bunch of weight over the summer before 12th grade the coaches would constantly ask him if he had gotten AIDS over the summer “down in the village” an historically gay neighborhood in NYC (we lived on Long Island) WILD times.

@@deo8038 No, they did a stupid episode using the wrong word to prove a point that doesn't need to be proved. The F word is not wiped clean because you claim you don't mean it homophobically, and their point about words changing meaning over time is not really one that needs to be made because it's like trying to show the point of water being wet. Also, why did they make the opposite point with the n-word episode? Also, using "gay" or the F word "non homophobically" doesn't ACTUALLY make sense (and so is against their point) if the only reason you use those terms to put someone down is because you associate being homosexual with a negative. If not, how do those words even make sense as a put down? You have not actually removed the homophobia, because the homophobia is required for them to work even in the so-called non-homophobic way. So, actually, not only did they make a point that doesn't really need to be made (unless you are trying to justify people using unfortunate language, I suppose), but the failed to even realyl make it because they used a word that is not, actually, being used differently than it was 50 years ago.

They were regularly used by students not even 10 years ago. I remember everyone in middle school extensively using these terms this exact way. Honestly as far as advertising goes for kids this does a good job of capturing their lingo. That's the problem with making campaigns around kids. They have an entirely different world and societal view and get away with so much more than adults. You can't really go down to their level without burning yourself. Kids are way more perceptive than we give them credit. They can feel the negativity and silent dislike towards minority and disfranchised communities, and they have no filter or sense of guilt.
