It's normal in tech and among you've workers. I'm an elder millennial and the longest job I held was 3 years (and only bc I had multiple promotions)

job hopping is dysfunctional for workers and companies. For workers: they have to deal with brand new office dynamics, personalities, and demands and that is really emotionally taxing. They also have to deal with wildly different health insurance plans, that will always be inferior to their last company. For companies with turnover in many roles that quickly, there is little continuity of knowledge and history of projects, so much information is lost I have given up caring about a career in my industry after 20 years as there is very little room for or willingness to promote from within

Agreed. I was job hopping before it was recognized as such. I’ve never stayed anywhere longer than 2 years. I’m 38 now and I’ve been at my job 3 years. I’ll only stay another year. I actually think my varied background plays into my strengths (and salary growth).

One of the most ridiculous interview questions at the moment is "Where do you see yourself in 5 Years?" The reason I think so is simply that employers don't guarantee 5 years. 😮

Employers never guaranteed 5 yrs or any yrs in my lifetime. (GenX) Not sure where anyone gets the idea that that was a thing anytime since 1980 in the US corporate sector.

I’m 68 and retired with a pension. I totally agree that corporations lost their soul when defined benefit pension plans were replaced with the 401k. It’s hard out there, and I wish all of you the very best! My advice is don’t sacrifice your health for a company. Take care of yourself both mentally and physically, eat healthy, exercise and take time off for the things you enjoy.

@@PrettyGuardianIf you didn't finish 30 years at the company, you got no pension, and there was nothing to roll over to another employer.. It was a privately funded lifetime entitlement, you didn't pay into it so you were owed nothing if you left before retirement age.

My grandfather, his father, and his father all worked for Armor meat packing in Chicago for their entire careers, retired fully pensioned. My mom and dad had three jobs between them their entire careers. I've had three jobs in one year. Half the companies I worked for don't even exist anymore. My last "permanent" job with salary and benefits was 1996. IT went almost entirely to contracting after 2001 and 2008. I've spent more time looking for work than I have employed in the last 10 years. All savings are gone. I'm 70 years old. Retirement? I'll have to take a half day off to go to my funeral. My kids all have degrees and none of them are working in their fields, when they do have work. One makes sandwiches. This is not the world I thought I would live in as an adult.

I feel for you sir, and thanks for sharing that detailed post. But imagine the many young people (and middle aged people!) who don't even have kids because they don't believe they can feed mouths in this uncertain economy. The real issue is supply and demand of labor and jobs. Corporations have lobbied the government to make sure there is always too much labor and too little jobs, and workers have been shafted.

I work for a prominent lab company. When COVID happened, we got all kinds of bonuses for our "essential" jobs. It was the last time we got a real pay increase.

The curse of a "bonus" is that future pay is often based on percent increase of past pay - NOT including the bonus. In the long run, a $60k job with a 20k bonus is worth less than a 70k job with a 10k bonus. It's even worth less than the 70k job with NO bonus after a few years. And this curse can even follow you to future employers. This is also why a "signing bonus in lieu of higher salary" can be a problem.

@@Insightfill that is not how taxes work. The taxes taken are based on predicted income; bonuses will have a high tax rate because they are a higher payout. If you overpay based on that, you file for a refund. If they don't take enough bc of bonuses and commissions paid (happens) you owe at the end.

@@JenniferBrick Maybe this was a reply to a different response? I didn't mention taxes. I think my point came up in one of your last videos. A bonus in lieu of a pay raise may sound good (it's all income-taxed the same*) but since future pay increases are based on past pay rates, accepting a bonus instead of a salary increase can be a long-term trap. *Edit: I get that they can mess up the withholding, but it all balances out in year-end. Still: my point was that bonuses mess up long-term earning potential.

@@timgibney5590 Disposability works both ways with unequal leverage. When an employee disposes of an employer, they usually lose standard of living. So, yes, an employee may suffer mistreatment for the sake of other interests -- like their family.

It will never happen with the outsourcing, with billion of people literaly happy to work for 10 times less (and still be 5x better off due to enormous cost of living gap). How did it happen that companies have a right to sell goods and services in high cost of living location, which were produced in the low cost of living location? This destroyed the West.

@@bigbarry8343 This maybe true for low value or non skilled labor. But everyone who outsourced in the 2000s looked good for 1 year until projects failed, servers crashed, CPA's got audited, and losses came in due to low quality work. Worse the outsourced companies refuse to engage in projects and become integrated as they went by tickets dictated by the contract. It was expensive and terrible to insource back in.

@@jb44448 sounds like your a wood chopper or busy bee, we try to keep the people that are great at what they do in their current roles and just pay more. Promotion, at least into leadership, you have to be more knowledgeable rather than skilled in a domain and have a likable personality. I know because I used to be good at what I did until I learned how this all works.

Yeah. I've personally seen brother/sister bump each other up in the company and protect each other from criticism. Or newbie ends up in a relationship with someone higher up. They get married. And whaddaya know.. few years later newbie is the director of a department. Some people are literally untouchable (because they're so favorited). You could get video of them beating an employee senseless and management would be like "hmm we should investigate this. Thank you for letting us know" and then start writing you up for trivial things.

I agree with your comment - but also according to Google the largest increase in Median home prices was in the 1970’s at 43%. It is tough now, my only point is that it also has been tough in the past and the same doom & gloom comments were made then. I choose to believe we’ll navigate these unknown waters in a similar way.

Yeah it is terible. I can tell you from personal experience that he have problem with you, but can't tell you in person so he is diing it because of some reason, but can't tell you coz he is lacking strenghth to talk to you. Only positive is he wants you to leave and probibly can't fire you.... i am manager and i used to do it when i was 24... terible now i talk straight to the people and tell them why they will get a pay cutt and how can they get it back 100%times better. If you want to work there, just confront him, he will probibly tell you. 😊

What's irritating is brand new employees start at a higher pay than senior employees sometimes. And when you bring it up to your boss they just give a shameless "so what" response. Job hopping is better for your career in some cases. I've literally shown them a screenshot from job hiring sites like "here's what pay you're hiring brand new people, here's what i make" and they just don't even care.

@themightyruler1319 exactly what happened to myself and my former senior colleagues in my previous workplace. When another of my colleagues left, they were replaced with a permanent staff who had zero admin experience (yet was getting more than me as I was on minimum wage, mind you I was expected by management to train this person and when delegating duties, management pushed them back to me and their excuse was "the new admin doesn't know what to do".) - when I left the workplace myself, I too was replaced with another permanent staff who had (yet again) no admin experience. The sad thing was in my former workplace, all office staff (who had at least a year of experience) as-well as healthcare assistants/senior healthcare assistants were on minimum wage and overworked.

I did the calculation on the wage erosion I've gone through since 2000, when I made $60,000 p.a., which was the equivalent of about $107, 000 in 2024. Jobs I got in 2013, 2016, and 2019 all paid....$60,000 (I'm a copywriter). And what are the majority of copy jobs I'm seeing in 2024 paying? $50-$65,000...40-50% less in buying power from the same job 24 years ago. And that's not even the whole thing...just the high-level.

If it’s something deeper like designing things with actual intent and philosophy AI poses roughly the same threat as it does for any other field like manual labor or service industry.

Not true. There are three hundred million people in the US, most of the economy is run by worker bees. Go outside: most of the people you see are bees, not creators or innovators. The problem is corporations lobbying the government to make life more miserable for the bees, in the name of extra profit. There is going to be pushback at some point, as there was in the past.

2% pay increase is an extremely generous amount these days. 🙄 I got a 1% raise last year for a pretty favorable annual evaluation. I’ve been with my company for over a decade. Yet this year they’ve decided to cut employee hours by 7%!! Keep in mind that last fiscal profits were at a 5.4% increase, or $139.1 billion dollars!! So yeah, I’mma 9-5 fuk-it-all manager. They obviously have no loyalty towards me, nor care if I have enough money for heat in the winter, food in my refrigerator, & the ability to pay my rent. So they can go pound sand if they expect my loyalty to remain intact.

Great video. I managed to nab a corporate job right out of college back in 2005 and am nearing 20 year’s experience. I’m in a VP role and HATE IT. The level of toxicity has grown literally year after year but since covid it has become UNBEARABLE. I recently received a shoulder tap on a C-suite tole and am seriously considering not accepting the role. In fact, I’m seriously considering a new position with lower pay as it is not worth it. I’ve changed careers/industries three times and about to do it again for a lower position that I won’t have direct reports. The corporate hustle isn’t worth it.

I think people expect toxicity to decrease as they ascend - but it gets more intense. Your colleagues are often competing for opportunities, budget, etc. In the meantime, you're trying to be the umbrella to protect others from the toxicity, and it is exhausting and a massive burden to bear. It's also the rank with the high pay inequity if you're a minority. I think we need to leverage the power we have, but also you have to take care of yourself because burning out and becoming bitter doesn't help anyone. Sending you vibes for what they're worth.

The thing about gig work is that people just do not want to do the 9-5 anymore, there's very little flexibility having to physically be at a place for years on end of your life. This is why gig work has been a viable option for a lot of people, work when you can or want and don't when you don't feel like it. For someone like me with no kids and little debt gig work is enticing simply because it gives me time to pursue any personal goals and hobbies.

I am leaving my current job due to prioritization of mental health and going to master school in the fall. I've been at my current job for two years. People were telling me at my job that they haven't gotten raise since 2019. I just got a $10,000 raise from my $40,000 salary. Everyone got some sort of raise but I also know a lot of people who where feeling the same things I felt about the company and wanted to quit. I feel like they just gave the raises out as the last ditch effort to promote people the stay. For some backstory, I work in an addiction rehab facility as a counselor, and I'm going back to get my masters degree in counseling.

As I move into semi retirement & self employment as a reseller I live in a blue state & now qualify for Obama care & it's so nice to be able to use that extra money on investments & dining out ! After the scare of the pandemic , I've decided to take social security at 62 & do my resale gig to stay slightly active. Just glad the program is still solvent. Good for you. I'm 54 and am not in a pension program. And I live in Florida so yeah you can imagine how much we state employees are valued. Disposable is more like it. My work place is very stressful and I live alone with just my income so looking to start a side consulting business. I think the earliest I can take SS is going to be 65, not 62. I'm glad you are set up in a good situation. I am just holding my breath regarding what will happen in this country with this election.

worked as an essential worker through covid, with about half our labor force out sick at any given time. so working shorthanded was a killer and the workloads were insane and the hours grueling. no bonuses, no pay raises, and they never bothered to actually hire replacements for people we lost so the workloads and hours became the new normal. it was at that point i decided to just change jobs every few years and stop trying to climb the ladder. i make enough to be comfortable and being at the bottom allows you to skate by unnoticed and have very little responsibility and almost no stress. only downside is youre always looking for the next job, but that's not that bad. truth is, employers just have no incentive to be loyal to you, and you have no incentive to be loyal to them. that's not an indictment of corporations or workers, it's just the way it is. play the game.

Check out court reporting. There is a huge shortage across the country. You can freelance, work in a courtroom, be a captioner, among other opportunities. It's a great career that not many know about.

Current job, gave us our raises first then our review. As to NOT be able to negotiate. Merit increases were not Merit at all. The low producers got bigger increases cause they make the lowest. While the high producers got the lowest increase. The reason was "We only had so much to work with"....our team mate left the 3% and gave himself a 30% pay raise by accepting a manager position elsewhere. Found out a Director of Tech who earned 175k a year couldn't fix his own laptop. Delegated everything and did nothing. Asked the CTO for 20% raise "cause I am worth it" saw it on the emails when the highers up left. While giving me grieve on my 2% increase. I make the most in the dept. But no upward momentum. I am currently assessing where I want to go in my tech career. I just can't break into the next tier of positions. I have the experience, certs and had several jobs promise to "Train" and "Mentor" but rarely due and forget about it until you submit 2 weeks notice.

Loyalty like respect is a 2 way street. Employers need employees (until AI robots) so they need to show respect and loyalty to the work. Since pensions and benefits disappeared, out went loyalty. Respect disappear when share holders were put ahead of workers. So in short….. take whatever you can from your employer and only do what you agreed to do when hired.

Stayed 4.5 years in tech - left without a job lined up, had an offer with a 1.7x raise before my 2wks was over. Up and out or get fucked. They will take advantage of your loyalty by taking advantage of you in terms of your salary.

@@jedpittman6739 You need to stop thinking like an employee and start thinking like your own agent. At some point in your career you will stop seeing your boss as a boss, especially if you remain technical. You will be more experienced than your superiors, you will be more capable than your superiors. They are not your boss. You are providing them YOUR services and you DESERVE to be compensated for the value you provide. So my first recommendation would be to know your value and second would be to advocate for yourself. If your business is not advocating for you by giving you good raises, leave and do not look back. If you are skilled in tech, you can find a job anywhere at any time. Do not care about the 'market' because if you are good it does not matter.

To answer your question at 2:43; because some stability is better than no stability. I am in a government job that pays less than these sxie tech jobs or finance careers, but I can provide for my kids (as a single mother) and pay a mortgage on a modest home in a shtty neighborhood. American dream came with a sacrifice. I teach English language courses on the weekends to supplement my income. But we have our basic needs and can take a vacation once a year.

As a freelancer, rates have been steadily decreasing, as people undercut the current rate to win the job and push wages for everyone lower. When I had zero experience, I could command a market rate 3x higher per word than I can now. Another problem is that so many people are switching to freelance that it is driving the wages down for us oldschoolers. Plus having to compete globally, it's getting to be impossible to survive anymore

My company has gone from 50 people over two floors of an office building to 3 directors working from home and all the other workers now in India..... which is also where two of the directors were born before migrating to the USA for their education. First it was all onsite in USA then home office in USA and then lease an office in India and then cut thirty percent of US workforce a year for three years and ramp up the India office. All that Democr*p pandemonic money went towards moving the jobs offshore - great investment!

Yeah the place I work for did a similar thing. They're even too embarassed to even say out loud we have employees in india; it's all hush hush. And what's even more ridiculous ... is that they made the employees from india be the QA team for a call center. People who barely speak English who are getting paid next to nothing an hour are grading our calls which affect whether we get promotions.

It is not worth being stuck in some toxic corporate environment, working your ass off making the owners wealthy, hoping one day you will be noticed and eventually get the promotion to director or partner in 10+++ years while wishing the present away and enjoying your 2 weeks annual leave. So good to see things are changing and that more opportunity is now becoming increasingly available for people to break-free from corporate slavery and take charge of their destiny!

My old-fashioned state govt job boss sees anything less than 4+ years in a job as "job hopping" and says it's a red flag, and doesn't want to interview them. I don't get it! Especially since promoting in place, or even in your own area, in the state govt is nearly impossible. They love bringing in outside folks to promote so why shouldn't people leave? What, they expect people to be passed over 2-3 times and just sit there and wait?

I've had many 1 year jobs lol. Parents or family think this is nuts, but I think it's common in Truck Driving. Also, Trucking companies and I'm sure many other aggressively try to Recruit / Poach workers from other companies. So, instead of waiting for a raise that might happen, people jump to the job with the starting rate higher than what they have right now. Also, there are few long term Strong Benefits to staying. Unless a random company has unusually robust retirement perhaps.

Thankfully my job raised my salary 25% in 2021. I make the above the median income plus my annual raises are over 3%. I also get quarterly bonuses. My job offers a pension if you were hired before a certain date. I started 8yrs ago, so I have a pension along with my 401K. New hires do not get a pension, only 401K. Im definitely blessed for the job security I have.🙏🏽

Jennifer, I have been watching your videos for years now and you have never stoppes being relevant and accurate about current topics. Your focus is unique and you deserve way more recognition. I appreciate that the space you occupy on social media is more on the business side of things. It is hard though to separate some of the reality you speak of going on within corporate culture that is really hapenning before all of our eyes and juxtaposed with the political climate. I work in HR. I have been a VP 3 times and laid off and rehired 5 times. Same company. Some managers have to lay off entire staff before they are laid off themselves. Cruel.

Yes, the traditional idea of a career is dead. I would even go as far as say that job titles are close to being meaningless, since a good number of companies are promoting people without pay increases. Every company is favouring itself and interests a lot more nowadays. Job hopping should be the norm; people shouldn't sit 5+ years at a single place, even if the company is a good company.

I'm a Business and Employment Specialist and we're seeing layoffs of well known brand name companies doing layoffs of 30+ year employees and once stable industries/positions sending roles overseas, to AI or just cutting back. There's almost no such thing as recession proof roles and those that are, are toxic, unhealthy workplaces/industries

It's really hard to stay at a job for years when they don't treat you correctly. I don't like to hear the surface level opinion of people who say that people just don't want to work or lazy to work nowadays. If i think about the jobs where i worked within this decade, i can honestly say that i only had one job which was treating people correctly but unfortunately they had financial issues and had to close the company in my country, so many people got laid out. After that all the companies i worked were treating people like dogs... not even like dogs... underpayment is a serious issue. They want you to work all day, also they want you to over-work your hours but don't pay for it. Also narcissistic , rude, heartless bosses are huge problems but somehow they get promoted. Hard work is not appreciated anymore. I also grew up in a family where they adviced me to "keep my head down, don't complain, work hard" so i did that for almost 10 years at different companies and i also witnessed this in case of many other people. So it's really a lie that people don't want to work. Unfortunately, companies don't really care about employees anymore. The list of job requirements is endless but what they give in return is very little...

There's no cost of living increase in the federal minimum wage. They know it's unlivable. I have a bachelors degree and half my jobs in the 18 years since I graduated have been min wage. It's all so out of balance. I appreciate your take on it all ❤

I worked hard at my last laboratory job because they agreed to my workplace training through my training facility. I kept having to remind them for months to sign off so I can complete the certification. Well after 6mths and admin at my training facility emailing they came to my job and my manager pretended to be in meetings. Finally someone signed off on my training. Less than 2weeks later they fired me because they didn’t want to pay for my certification. Which put me in a bad situation because I was trying to finish my certification before moving out of the country. It should’ve taken me 6mths! The training facility wasn’t any different as they didn’t back me and they kept my money I paid to them which should’ve been refunded. Now I’m out of money and a certification and I have to leave the country on August. I’m tired of being messed over like this

I got an 8 percent raise before my 4th interview with another company. Recruiter comes and says, well you said you would be OK with x salary. I told him, the company does not even know who and how many people I would be supervising so how I could discuss any salary. I did not get the job and I was ok with it. The role they were offering was a lateral transfer. I was looking for a director role. Otherwise, what is the point. 4 interviews and a psych evaluation. Ridiculous.

I took a break from my union job during the pandemic, I stayed at this shop doing a job I actually liked for 15 months when by the time raises came around I worked the most overtime than anyone in the shop up until they took away overtime in the new year, whst did I get for my performance based raise? $0.20 yup, that's it even a dollar raise. For 3 years, I've been doing my trade as a Scaffolder, making $100k/year and building my pension. Be willing to work out of your city for weeks or months at a time. Join a union but only be loyal to yourself. Get a real job and work with your hands.

I don't see this being like the industrial revolution or any significant socio-economic shift we've seen before. None of these shake-ups involved a machine that could both create new jobs AND perform the new jobs it creates. I see no reason to believe that AI will create jobs it cannot do. The only voids in AI occupied jobs will be those created artificially by legislation. Humans will play a part in research, art, and hospitality, but I don't see anything remotely approaching a net retention of jobs happening. My guess is most people (I'd guess 80%) will not work. They will either live off UBI or in hovels on the outskirts of trillionaires' estates. The reality is probably somewhere in the middle, but those are the realistic options. And believe me, I feel as strange as anyone reading this to suggest that is "realistic", but here we are...

Careers are kind of SLIGHTLY declinging, but are not dead. And lets face it, you only need university for Law, Medicine, Surgeon (Doctor in general), Teacher and Engineer. You do NOT need a degree or post-graduate education for ANYTHING else. Period.

Because of the fact that I saw my father & siblings stay in one job for decades, I thought I was supposed to do the same. I am just like you... Over the past 25 years, I have had a variety of careers within different industries. This has made me feel "behind" my peers. I think this time, I can actually have leverage in order to be "ahead of the game", by gaining knowledge of current employment trends!

I can only speak from my experience. Coming up at work in my 20s, I am a Gen-Xer, working for the same company for 25 years so far. I heard over and over the advice that I should leave my company and look for the same job that would pay me more money. Some of these individuals did not have a job at critical times during recessions and inflation. Except for one possible Millennial or Gen-Z, we only have one person who has stayed. It could possibly be because he or she is here with a working visa, working on becoming a permanent resident and perhaps a citizen eventually. But my point is that the Millennials and Gen-Zs who came through the company were not fired or laid off; they just left. The longest stay was 5 to close to 5 years. I think that companies caught on to this trend, and they are the first to not show loyalty.

There has been zero incentives for Millennials or Gen Z employees to be loyal in their careers. Salaries have stagnated, the cost of living is unhinged, and the government wants to raise our retirement age. Any shred of job security that remained post dotcom but or Great Resignation is gone. Look at all the long tenured employees being laid off from big companies. Computer stories of people who invested their entire careers at one place - and now it's a red flag if you stay longer than 5 years for many hiring managers.

@@JenniferBrick A lot of the symptoms you describe above are the result of globalization, deglobalization and technological efficiencies replacing workers. The process is causing instabilities, unfortunately your generations are experiencing the worst of it. Better to become less reliant on large corporations and government. There are groups of people in this country who have managed to work inside and outside of the system. It’s a hard life but they seem to thrive no matter what.

The “old days” were a very brief period of time. Before a large amount of corporate careers, pre WW2, most people ran small businesses with their family, conceptualized out of the farms their parents/grandparents started. The economic system is always in fluctuation.
