The IBM Z mainframe has a history dating back for decades! Although IBM's mainframe computers run critical business applications for many Fortune 500 companies, there may be the perception that it's "old technology" among new technology job-seekers. In this video, IBM Fellow Rosalind Radcliffe interviews recent IBMer Christina LaRow, asking her why she's starting her career as a mainframe developer--and why others should considering doing the same.

That's fantastic! I'm currently in the interview process and truly hope for success. After sending over 100 job applications without receiving positive responses, a friend recommended IBM, and I received a positive answer within about a week. I'm sincerely grateful to IBM 🐝

I also started recently to know, understand and work with IBM Z. I’ve to say it’s fascinating and I’ve been amazed quite a few times. I have so many misunderstood and wrong concepts in my mind I couldn’t believe it. Totally recommend to start a journey on this topic 👏🏻👏🏻

First I was always interested in statically typed languages, C in this case, that my friends n apparently other people in the web dev space I knew would regard as old n not recommend me doing it. I always liked the idea of knowing how apps work or even computers etc. work at a low level. Now I'm finally enrolled for a cs degree using java and sometimes cpp. I still get people who always suggest I shouldn't use java for my side projects (currently self teaching web dev) but instead pick the most popular ones for studying backend like python or js. I can do small stuff in py but I don really enjoying writing in it as much as I do with languages like cpp or java, mainly because of the syntax at this stage cause I'm not really experienced. Seeing this video makes me feel that it's not a bad idea to stick with the traditional ways ❤

You may have more luck searching for IBM z, which is its official name and z16 being the latest version. This channel already has a number of great videos but you'll certainly fond others over the whole internet. 😊

I have started working on Mainframe since 1 year... but I really want to explore and expand the scopes of the mainframe more, Currently I am trying to switch but didn't get a single interview call or mail.I am getting disappointed as I really want to get into a current great project.

I'm retired now, but my whole career was spent programming COBOL on a Hewlett Packard 3000 midrange computer. I know IBM has their own proprietary system for COBOL also. I really enjoyed my career, and it was quite challenging at times. I'm guessing that most large companies core software still run on mainframe computers today.

How to start my career in IBM residing in Brussels

Picking technology solutions is all about price/performance. There really needs to be a case made for how IBM's Z solutions are the price/performance winners over Intel/AMD/ARM based solutions. I cannot imaging running production workloads written in Python on any platform. Python is an interpreted dynamic language which is easy to code in but very wasteful of CPU cycles. Wasted CPU cycles on an IBM Z platform must be very expensive.

Thank you again for sharing the skillsbuild courses. IBM will always be a part of me because I used that information to build my foundation. I feel so much more confident being able to learn from a modern, up to date source that also shows you where to learn more outside of IBM. You guys rule! 🦾🥳
