Life At Sea In The Merchant Marine Aboard A Cargo Ship
Over 90% of the world's trade is carried by sea.
Time-lapse of a nearly 1000 foot Container Cargo Ship meeting various size ships and vessels in the Houston Ship Channel. When large ships meet in this channel they often come very close to each other, thus the "Texas Chicken".
Filmed using the GoPro Hero 8 Black.

My understanding from my dad, former Capt Port of Houston, is sometimes the pressure waves of the two passing ships relied on to maintain separation. None of these looked that close but thanks for sharing.

Your dad is correct, and believe me for ships these size they are plenty close. The amount of water they displace will still effect any passing ship at this distance..and then you have to worry about the negative pressure afterwards which can pull ships closer to each other....this is why pilots get paid the big bucks!! Thanks for the comment

This is as close as 2 ships can get safely. These ships displace water hundreds of yards away so yes they are dealing with "pressure waves"

You folks don’t get the full impact of Texas Chicken because this video was taken in the Trinity Bay portion of the waterway, where ships get close because they have to stay in the dredged portion of the channel. There are not only two ship depth lanes in this channel but there are outer lanes in each direction dredged for barge traffic. This makes it like a interstate for ships. But that’s not even the fun part. The expression really came about from ships passing in the upper part of the Ship Channel where the waterway is a dredged out 30 mile long bayou. The channel is dredged to a few hundred feet wide today but was narrower in the past. Pilots regularly relied on the water pressure of the passing ships to keep them apart since in the small channel the water had no where else to go. The depth is around 45 feet deep and with ships often 35 feet or more to the keel, again not much place for water to go. This limited amount of free space can cause other phenomena that perhaps a Pilot can explain one day. The big container ships usually go into the Barbours Cut or Bayport terminals of the port and don’t have to make the trip up the curvy and narrow portion of the channel. That part of the channel is mostly lined on both sides with refineries, chemical plants, car yards, and a little bit of everything else that goes onboard a ship.

The Houston pilots have an explainer about the Hydrodynamics on their website. You can see it in the wake.

So Here I'm. What does Texas chicken?

It’s nicknamed the Texas Chicken by local pilots and Mariners because two ships are essentially meeting each other head on in a narrow channel. The pilots on both ships turn last minute away from each other and use their bow waves to help keep their ships from colliding. Very impressive ship handling skills!

Awesome video! These hydrodyynamic forces are huge and hard to comprehend sometimes. So cool to see physics being used in the "real" world!

My favorite is the head-on situation solved at 0:12. Thank you for your time invested in these videos keeping us entertained Bryan!

It truly is remarkable how close these ships come in the channel in certain areas...and the ships are only getting bigger and bigger!

Looked a lot of room in the video. A maneuver exactly the same as the "texas chicken" is done in the Welland Canal.
