This is an updated video of my DIY Cargo Trailer Toy Hauler conversion that includes all the final touches and accessories I added since the original build video 2 years ago when I was about 90% complete. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did making it. God Bless!

Thanks. Also, please subscribe and add notifications. I have ordered another cargo trailer and starting another build in March 20201. I will be making a series of how to videos as I go for all the major systems (solar, electrical, plumbing, electrical, insulation, etc.) Will include layout and etc..

Rewatching... Still one of my favorite builds Don! This is basically how I plan to rebuild my trailer. Had shoulder surgery and that put me way behind on getting things done so, hopefully this summer I can duplicate your build! Thanks for sharing. I still think you guys need to come up to Nebraska for the CWS this June, Florida is playing pretty well this year!😆

Glad to hear your shoulder is doing well enough for you to work on your CTC. When you get into it, if you have any questions and I can help, feel free to ask. Actually, I may be in Nebraska in June to see my son and grandkids. My son lives about 2.5 hours southwest of Omaha. Will know next week if I can go.. I will be traveling with my 6*12 if I go. CWS will be going on while I am there for sure. I plan to take my grandsons camping and do some fishing. Just going to hangout. No projects on my son's house planned this year.

Really sweet setup! Although i do admit, flooded lead acid has to be my least favorite battery. If you plan on keeping the setup for a long time, and dont want to replace batteries every few years, I would recommend researching lithium iron phosphate (lifepo4). Higher cost up front, but with the insanely high cyclic capacity and almost non existent self discharge, they will last much longer and save you money in the long run. They are also a lot safer than lithium ion and do not vent any explosive gases. I really want to build something like this soon! I appreciate the content.
@donsdoityourself2547
@donsdoityourself2547 3 года назад
right on with the LiFeP04. I ordered 4 3.2v 280aH cells from China along with a BMS. Building my own 280aH bank for about $550. They will weigh about 200lbs less than my 4 Golf Car batteries. I cannot wait to get rid of them.. but they are what I could afford at the time.
@infl
@infl 3 года назад
@@donsdoityourself2547 Yeah lithium iron phosphate can be expensive. They are also very sensitive to overcharge and undercharge, temperture, etc... Make sure you do plenty of research. I never bring my cells above 3.45 volts for cyclic use. And CC floating the batteries is not a good thing to do, you will need new chargers. If you care about your cells, balance them when they are new, get victron smart solar charge controllers and a lifepo4 charger with adjustable voltage. Totally worth it though. im never going to mess with lead acid again. Im actually thinking about a lithium titanate car battery.
@thebusterdog6358
@thebusterdog6358 3 года назад
Lead acid batteries? After working with commercial generators for 15 years I have seen just too many of them explode, for absolutely no reason. I am not saying lithium ion are any better, but they would be if you could recycle them. Hopefully someday while you're sitting at your table one of them doesn't just go boom. Just replace them every other year and they shouldn't be a problem. Or replace the 4 of them for a couple of 8 D heavy duty deep cycle batteries, at $280 or so they're expensive but you can safely use them for easily 5 years before replacement.
@infl
@infl 3 года назад
@@thebusterdog6358 Lithium ion is also known to be quite violent, yes. But LiFePO4 is much safer in that regard. They rarely even catch fire if punctured at full charge

Very nice. Just one guy’s opinion, kill the music! Too many RU-vidrs ruin great videos with annoying loud music that doesn’t allow the viewer to concentrate on otherwise good content. Almost stopped till you turned off 50% of the background noise :-;

Everything is so finished. You have some time into your trailer build. Wrap under the bed to match your cabinet finishes. Do you have enough room to sleep in the bed if you have bikes inside? Everything inside and outside looks quality
@donsdoityourself2547
@donsdoityourself2547 3 года назад
Yes, I can lower the bed over the bikes and I have step ladder to get into bed. That was one of the key things I wanted to was to be able to pull off the road and have full use of the trailer without unloading the bike(s). I could not find a trailer this size that I could do that with. A big reason I built my own. I wanted a functional toy hauler as small as possible and to pull with the F150.

Nice job. I was wondering did you add a weight distribution hitch to your rig. It would tow much better especially with a bike in the rear.
@donsdoityourself2547
@donsdoityourself2547 3 года назад
Yes I have. The trailer is a little nose heavy with the 240lbs of golf cart batteries up near the front and the front kitchen. The weight distribution hitch is needed as the tongue weight is exceeding 50lbs. It is actually closer to 900lbs.
@scottgorman7166

@@donsdoityourself2547 you mean 90lbs...900 lb tongue weight would cause havoc on your truck.

Very Very Nice! I especially like that you can have your bikes inside & still use the bed. I don’t like leaving things outside at night when I’m sleeping or it’s bad weather. I was thinking I’d have to go 24’ to have a separate living area & garage for the 4 wheeler/rzr but I like your set up a lot. Now I’ll have to watch your build video. 😊. Is that a CB/Ham Radio By Your Table? I like the music you’ve got playing also! Do you build these for people? What would be the cost to duplicate yours? I’m wanting one to get in areas hunting that I can’t get the RV. I had a 7.5’x12’ but that was too small for what I want to use it for now. Thanks For The Great Video!

Thanks Gia. Yes, that is a HAM Radio. You can build one of these for about $14,000 or more depending on how you provision it. I don't build these for others .. just a hobby for me. Good luck.

New subscriber here and excited to find your channel! This is by far the best build and presentation I have seen! Kudos to you on an awesome buildout and a straightforward presentation! Could you answer a few questions; did you do everything yourself or did you sub out any part? What previous experience did you bring to this conversion? Also, if you don’t mind, can you ballpark the “all in” price of the build including the trailer?

Hi Warren. I didn't have any particular experience before I built this. I am an Electronic Engineer and pretty much just a handyman type. I had built another trailer previously (very basic) and learned alot. I built another smaller 6x12 trailer last year I use off road. Each one gets a little better as I learn. I used alot of RU-vid videos and Ideas from other such as on TNTTT.COM (Cargo Trailer Conversion thread). I had the cargo trailer built to my specifications which was just the exterior coloring, interior height to 7.5ft, and the RV style door. I did everything else myself. Learned how to make the cabinet doors, plumbing blackwater/graywater tanks, and etc. The electrical part was easy for me in this case. I designed the bed lift after some trial and error. At the time I built this I had roughly $14,000 in it, but that was 6 years ago and prices have went through the roof as you know. It would probably be another 20% now? I built the 6x12 (my 3rd build) last year and prices were rising on all the building materials. I learned to weld on that one and went back and built a steel frame for the bed in the 7×18 trailer you saw. It is lighter and stronger now. I still use the 7x18 trailer when my wife goes camping with me, otherwise I take the 6x12. I did make a series of videos on that build as I went, so it may be helpful to you for some ideas. I will edit this note with a Playlist link. Good luck. ru-vid.com/group/PLqUKt7Ln0hFNMA_k1kDILS3k5PErFmn_B

Do you make builds for customers as well.. I have a 7x18 that I just purchased and I have no renovation experience..Or can you provide a blueprint with dimensions. I would definitely pay for the blueprint layout.

Awesome worked and the layout looked more like a cabin instead of a box! I was wondering if you can put the link of all the material that you bought to put in this trailer such as the floor, water tank, and the happijac lift bed. We just bought a V-nose 7x16 cargo trailer, and we are planning to convert it to a toy-hauler, and a similar cabin looks like yours. Thank you in advance!

I do not have a compiled list. I got the holding tanks, windows, oven, sink and etc. out of a truck camper being scrapped. Ideally if you can find an old camper being scrapped, you can recover a lot (even wiring). That is how I started and the rest came from Home Depot, Ebay, and Amazon. You may have to have custom tanks built if you cannot find any to fit between your floor joists. Here is a video og the build. I have video of the bed lift build also in the links in the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qD2oaDzrtSs.html

Yes I can. You do have to manage the loads however, for instance, you don't want to have the AC running and the fridge, and then try to microwave something. You would need to to turn the AC off briefly. All small stuff and AC works fine. Just have to be careful if you want to run microwave or electric hot water. Those take alot of power.

I have a 6’x12’ off-road toy hauler build I put together about 6 years ago and I will be purchasing a 8.5’x18x8 high V nose soon to build a larger unit capable of carrying four dirt bikes and sleep 4 adults. Did you get the trailer built with the standard 6” frame, or did you go with the optional 8” tubing. I have read it is hard to find holding tanks to fit under the 6” frame tubing. Great job on your trailer! The workmanship is excellent.

Thanks.. I am building a 6*12 now myself... just to get to more remote places. I had the floor joists put 16" on center and a triple tube tongue... I did not change the frame tubing. It is standard. It is harder to fund 15" wide tanks.. but you can get them.. that was the hard part for me.

You have finished yours really nice. I still have to add my shower bathroom where I will park my composting toilet too. I went to Sturgis with it and it worked great. Thx for sharing, R

about $14,000 to include the cargo trailer and then all the pieces and parts to build it out. I did use some parts I salvaged from another old camper (windows, holding tanks, sink, and a few other items). That did reduce the cost some also,

Thanks for the video, this is awesome!! I am almost done with my 6.5x12 trailer build. I have a side by side that almost fills up the entire trailer so working around space requirements is challenging, almost everything has to fold up or come out besides the stuff in the nose. How is your ham radio antenna mounted? What mount/antenna did you use? Thanks!!
@donsdoityourself2547
@donsdoityourself2547 3 года назад
I am building a new 6*12 as well. Will just have enough room for my dirtbike. For HAM antennas, I have a NMO mount for 1/4 wave VHF and UHF, and I carry a Chameleon MPAS 2.0 portable antenna system for HF. The NMO mount is on the roof near front door.

I really love your setup. I would suggest putting a safety bracket or unplug the bed lift before getting up there. just in case the remote or relay sticks. By the way do you know the final weight of this trailer? I was thinking of the same size and plan to pull it with a 600 lb 4 wheeler and a 2001 F-150 with 6000lb towing capacity.
@donsdoityourself2547
@donsdoityourself2547 4 года назад
Hi, Thanks for the suggestion. The remote does time out and the relay is deneregized. I do also have an interlock installed that shuts the power down if the bed raises too high and keeps driving... it stops about 18" from the ceiling so it should not pin me in any case. The final weight is ~4,000 to 4,500 lbs. I weighed it on some scales fully loaded for a trip with the Victory Kingpin (~700- 800 lb)and full tanks of fresh water and I was close 6,000 lbs so the empty weight is just a guess based on what I know the major payload items to weigh. The GVWR for the trailer is 7,000lbs but I also run Load range D tires just for plenty of margin. My F150 has a V8 and trailer towing package and is rated for 9,200lbs towing so no problems and tows well. You'd be pushing the limits if you are rated for 6,000 lbs. I'd say that there are alot of things you could do to reduce the build weight that I did not do, as that was not a major issue. Just running with empty water tanks saves 512 lbs.. When I am going to a place with water source, I only put in about 10 gallons for flushing toilet and etc. on trip.
