I hope you enjoy this video showing how we converted a 16' cargo trailer into a camper in just 4 weeks. Subscribe and be sure to check out our website at makeanddo.net for more videos.
Buy the strip LED lights here: amzn.to/2iT5Z7s
Buy Camp Stove here: amzn.to/2iY0mFw
Buy Stabilizing Jacks here: amzn.to/2jPW1Eo
Buy Portable Toilet here: amzn.to/2j0a22A
Buy Mini Fridge here: amzn.to/2jQ68Jn
Buy OxyLED Battery Lights here: amzn.to/2jFLnzY
Buy Wood Table here: www.ikea.com/us...
Although the camper conversion took us four weeks, there were still a few things we decided to do later. For example, we still plan to do the following:
-Add an awning or canopy across the back where the kitchen is.
-Put the camp stove on a slider
-Finish some of the trim work
-Add another window
-Make adjustments to the tables on the back door
-And a few more small things
Be sure to stay tuned. I'll post more videos as we continue our progress. With it being a tandem axle trailer, I'll post a video about braking. I'll also post videos about camper weight, running electricity, sway control and more.

Of all the videos I’ve watched yours explained the most to me. I’m very visual so when you showed the wall studs and caulking and insulation I understood 100% better what I will be doing when I start my cargo home on wheels. Thank you so much for the details. And your trailer is probably the best one I’ve seen. Just gorgeous. I love that the kids helped the whole time! Happy travels.

Great video, Thanks for the tips! I'm almost done with converting my 4'x6' V-nose cargo trailer into a toy hauler/camper. Adding 120v/12v/Solar power, AC, LED lights, AM/FM-CD/DVD, 24" TV, Cabinets, Tri-Fold sofa-bed and outside storage: 4'x5' roof-rack, 2'x4' rear receiver rack, 4'x5'8" deck above the extended tongue, which made the trailer far more stable at hwy speeds!

Your conversion skills are top notch. Excellent video. Cargo trailers are inherently more structurally sound than traditional campers [which they seem to just throw together]. I would add an awning to the rear along with a Patti'o Room, Lift that tailgate, and you have a covered, private porch that can be a screen room or completely enclosed. Add some steps to acess the rear tailgate and you are complete. Solar panels are a must as well. This was a build that Ive been wanting to do for a while now. Good luck

TEA JAY It’s probably not I’d do but it does have the advantage of being able to keep the cooking smells, heat and moisture out of the trailer. I suppose it depends on what type of environment it’s going to be used in. It’s got me thinking about how difficult it would be to make a slide out that contained the kitchen that you could deploy when you set up camp? With a trailer this wide there’s enough internal space to have a narrow corridor.

Because of an accident with my tow vehicle I have to downsize from a 36 footer that I build to a 24ft V nose. That is why your video caught my attention. This is now my 5th trailer I have to build. You have done a super great job you have a lot of good ideas. I assume you have anchored you wireing down on all points. If left hanging it will wear because of the vibration down the road. My V nose has a ramp door so I will be able to take my kitchen counter cart outside and cook out there. Another thing I have to make is a murphy bed queen size. Already have plans for it and I am going to incorporate some of your ideas. Thanks so much. I am a boater and I am calling this new one "MY LAND YACHT". Have great road trips,

You did a beautiful job on the trailer. It's not just the weight that your tow vehicle can pull, it's the total area of frontage of the trailer that drags on the air as you pull it. My pickup truck has that aspect listed along with the trailer weight listed.

I too am considering a conversion. I've looked at many campers, and many come close to what I want, but only about 85% the way there. Everywhere I want to go has shore power, water hookup, restroom facilities, and showers. If I don't need to deal with a black-water tank, I don't want to. Cassette toilets are a pain. Also, a back/front door, as apposed to on the side seems like a better layout. I'm thinking a door on the front, passenger side. The rear doors for fuse box, water heater, and storage. Then a Murphy bed Queen at the back, Murphy twing(stored vertically) on the Driver's side, and a jackknife couch for a fourth person.

Dadgum that is a heck of a job. My wife and I are trying to decide whether or not we want to go super cheap and buy an old used trailer and gut it and redo it or just go all out and buy a newer model. Then we noticed a cargo trailer for sale and my wife says why don't we convert something like a cargo trailer? I thought she was joking, but realizing that she's not it's definitely opened a new possibility. Thank you for posting your build.

One super positive thing about a cargo trailer vs a regular camper is that when I had my accident, the cargo trailer held up super well because of the steal corner beams. Regular campers don't have that. You should go check out my newest video that I just posted about how I completely redid this camper after my accident.

Excellent. Just one observation. As a professional restoration expert I can't tell people how important it is to 1) Always use the underlayment when installing a "floating floor". This is extremely important and acts as, not only a vapor barrier, but also traps any liquid from reaching the subfloor. 2) Never run your flooring material under the wall framing. IF the sink or something else leaks it will ruin a floating floor. Wood laminate, even the most expensive brands, can only guarantee about an eighth of an inch of "water resistance". You would have to rip all the flooring out and that's a pain when it runs under framing. Small observation. It saddens me every time I have to tear something out that someone worked so hard to build.

travel trailers typically also use romex wiring. It's gonna take an awful long time to break solid wiring from vibration alone. Wire nutted connections are typically whats frowned upon in mobile builds because of vibration

I think it's a fairly well established notion of not fact that a cargo trailer conversion is cheaper than a camp trailer, you can make it exactly how you want it with layout and functionality, and the trailer itself is built better than the purpose built camper version. A lot of cargo trailers that cost less than 5K, and quite a few considerably less than that.

Very nice work. Neat and clean. However you could have bought a new 18-20 ft trailer for what this probably cost you to do. What do you do it it is raining and you want to use the kitchen?

Nice job!! One thing I noticed is running more than one wire in or out of those short electrical boxes isn't up to code but still looks great

When you do this, how high can you go? Like for example... going under bridge overpasses, they aren't all really tall; some are low. So is there like a certain height that you don't go above for the top of the camper? How do you also make sure you don't go to heavy with a longer trailer? Thank you.

Omg, did you run 10 gauge (orange) wire? That must have been murder to install plugs ! Most everything could have been done in 14 gauge and maybe a couple of 12. I'm sorry for the guy that folded those into the shallow boxes.
@kinduo
@kinduo 7 лет назад
YES!!! It was a nightmare! That was my biggest mistake. I plan to do another video showing my electrical so that other people don't make that same mistake. You are right. I should have run 14 mostly and one 12 for my portable heater and ac, but it was a lesson learned. I'll know better next time.

you took the words right now of my mouth lol 10gauge already sucks in a 2 gang box and he is using shallow box from home depot that is maybe 10 cubic inch

It's not bad, but in all honesty, if it was me and I was going through that much work, I would have run some rebar along with the frame or something to give the trailer more structural integrity. I wouldn't have gone crazy with it just a basic cage top to bottom and sides for only a little more support, if the plan is to keep it long term it's really needed as it will hold it together 20-30 years down the road even tho that probably not the design for the camper.
