My problem with Lie-Nielsen is that their 60 1/2 block plane is the first brand-new hand tool I bought since starting my apprenticeship, and now that has set the bar for quality and craftsmanship for me.
all I have to say is that for any wondering why you pay what you do for lie nielson? the service. This is what sets them apart. i needed a new front knob for my rabbit plane, all it took was a two minute phone xall, and the part was in the mail. just amazing. i was sold based on the tool quality, but this put me over the moon. not having to send in the part or entire tool, and just being told "dont worry, free replacement will be shipped out the same day, you dont have to do anything" is probably the best thing to hear when dealing with customer service.
I called Lie-Nielsen for advice about a plane from a different manufacturer. They advised me to use a slightly different size of screw than that other manufacturer has used. They sent me their Lie Nielsen part for free! I am their customer for life.
I live on the beach and have constant ocean winds. My tools start rusting as soon as I un pack them it seems. I keep them as clean as I can but they will rust before my eyes as I use them. I have tried oil to coat them, wax, a product made by Boeing called T-9 Boeshield to prevent rust (which is great) storage socks and the oil paper they come in. Nothing helps. So my expensive choice. I bought some cheaper planes and 1 Lie Nielsen. Ended up giving away the cheaper planes and one by one I am getting my Lie Nielsen tools. They may have a short life where I live but the tools are just too good.
Jojoba oil is a waxy ester. The plants are interesting. They don't produce the beans from which the "oil" is extracted till they are seven years old. The oil itself has very high heat resistance and is much better in high-speed machinery than traditional oils and lasts longer before requiring replacement,
My lie Neilson scrub plane developed a small circular rust spot on the bottom just in front of the blade. I cleaned it but keep an eye on it doesn’t return.
Thank you for the advice about metal and the bench top. I am relatively new to woodworking and continue to do metalworking. I will now be more aware of "cross contamination" when I generate metal waste that might become an issue.
Too bad Marta is no longer at Lie-Nielsen as I always enjoyed talking with her on my many trips through the area and comparing notes on the 17th century box carving class we participated in by Peter Follansbee in June 2015.
Michael Kratky - i have seen several courses that look like they would be a good match for my needs/desires. I use to live in Maine, but had not the funds or time for woodworking. Now that I do have increased funds and time I live in Alaska so visiting the store/shop will not happen for "a while". 😁
I'm not sure why light mineral oil isn't recommended instead of plant extracts. non-oxidizing food safe mineral oil is about $16 a gallon. it's so effective that if you use it with oilstones, you'll never have anything rust (just handling tools will prevent rust), even after you wipe tools off - and in a cold shop, it doesn't start to cloud or stand like the plant oils do.
Good information for metals but nothing about wood. What is the finish on Lie Nielsen bevel edge chisel handles and how would you care for them over time ? Thank you
It is FERRO-PAK (A registered trademark). "That's the brown paper that your tool originally came in." It is a corrosion inhibiting wrapping and packaging material made of paper.
I recently got a 5/1/2 and it is therapy to make shavings. My first meet up was not good. with the sales staff I think they should be more teachers and less expliners of how we have failed.
the audio levels in these older videos really need a revisit. We shouldn't hear every single intake of breath, it's really distracting and overpowering, we also wind up listening to every single inadvertent sound in the video as if it was the main focus...
