I’m a shoe designer. I can tell you that the signature last resort shoe being discussed is made in a style that often referred to as “whole-cut” meaning most of the shoe is made of one piece of material (if you follow the main panel there’s only one seam at the heel with no other breaks). The main reason for doing this traditionally is for a clean minimal aesthetic but I guess an added benefit in a skate shoe would be the less seams there are the less seams there are to come apart. Laid flat this piece looks like a big U shape. This type of shoe is expensive to make as you can cut less of these big U shapes from one piece and material, it’s cheaper to have a multi-panel design with many smaller pieces (like a Cariuma for example). I say this to say, just because the shoe has a minimal look, aka “the most basic shoe ever” doesn’t mean it is basic or not good value. I haven’t owned either and I’m not biased (but Cariuma is wack)

I know you don't need anyone's approval to make the type of videos you do but having someone try to hold skaters and people in the industry to a high standard because you just actually care about the integrity of skateboarding (and being a good person) is pretty cool. Excellent. Also, every other company Dan talks about: Supreme (Tyshawn), Vans (Rowan) and Adidas (suicu) has at least 2-3 skaters that I would rather watch than the top 10 guys on Cariuma.
Tyshaun is so overrated... hes good but didnt even remotely deserve soty. Him winning it is honestly disrespectful to the history of soty and to all the other people who killed it that year and deserved it way more.

I have a feeling a LOT of people have called him out for a lot of years but we don’t ever see that or know the backstories. I’ve met people like him that just filibuster their way through accountability and deflect and gaslight their way through every criticism that comes their way.

I’m not under the assumption that these companies are operating above their interest in making money but which companies we want to stick around does matter. I agree that cariumas do cater to a growing population of skaters and if they like it fine. But to stop caring about the details of what skateboarding should look and feel like through the brands we support is something I can’t back. Obsessing over minute details is how most of us got better and decided to keep skateboarding past most peoples quit point.

I enjoy watching Dan's content when he's just skating, vlogging and having simple laughs with friends. I agree that he's being a contrarian for the sake of it to the point I almost think he's trolling, whether he's conscious of it or not because this "core vs whatever" is so engrained in his mindset and content. Almost a lack of education on some of the topics he's just brushed over without thought and research. I appreciate you both but with you on this discussion.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. I def enjoy the 20/30 minutes raw skating videos he has. It’s almost become a nightly routine to fall asleep to at this point.
Totally agree, I used to watch his videos skipping the talking parts (I really like how he skates) but a lot of times he's talking so much even while skating or filming someone like WTF, I had to unsub. He could learn a lot from Dale on that.

Also Saying that cariuma doesn’t use child labor isn’t a valid defense and allegations that nike uses child labor does not absolve cariuma of criticism. It is a logical fallacy to deflect criticism from cariuma because Nike did something similar literally decades ago. If anything the skateboarding industry should learn from nikes inorganic entry into the industry and recognize that cariuma is doing the same thing but even less organic. This isn’t about Nike vs cariuma, so please stop being willfully ignorant.

i like Dan and lifted tater, they both have very different views and perspective and video styles, i like seeing calm videos of dans and more critical videos of Mr hater
One of Dan's recent videos, where he does some proper street skating around LA, was genuinely decent. I'm not about the weird children's skatepark content though when he lives in California and has all the cool street spots at his disposal
