This video is based on Volumes 7, 8, 9i, 10, and 11 of the collected works of Carl Jung
In this video we discuss the psychology of religion from a Jungian perspective. Jung believed that religion was quite valuable for our psychological health and endeavoured to study the connection between the psyche and religious experiences. We specifically discuss how religion interacts with the unconscious, how religious systems provide a sense of psychological stability, and the consequences of abandoning religion.

I was depressed and even suicidal as a Christian. Now that I’ve left all of that supernatural nonsense and dogma, I am a much happier, kinder, more caring, giving and loving person. I understand some need the crutch of religion, and that’s good if it helps those people, but at the end of the day religious belief is just human comfort and hope at the expense of truth.

It's good to hear Carl Jung's theory of religion explained so basically as if aimed at someone new to the concept. I found it very clarifying.

Great content and seriously underrated! Even though I always read Jung as being more than open to the idea that the unconscious can not simply explained as a phenomenon of our mind and might be linked to a higher state of existence. The way I understand Jung is that in a sense it might not even matter if you are receiving messages from a supernatural being or of a deep part of your psyche as both would supposedly have your best interest in mind. Especially in his autobiography, he seemed to confess that he believed in a metaphysical concept of the soul, the reality of spirits and some form of an afterlife. It feels like a dilemma: In order to be accepted as a part of the scientific community Jungians have to treat the phenomena encountered by them as merely psychological, but in order to get to the core of Jung's thought a certain degree of acceptance or at least openness to metaphysical concepts seems necessary. Btw congrats on learning German, viel Erfolg!

Jung was just an obvious neo-platonist trying to justify his own pre-existing religious biases despite being smart & well read enough books to know God is a Bronze Age political fiction.

The idea of our psyche being "merely psychological" is the problem which makes the psyche somehow not real. The psyche has real attributes but the problem comes in when claims are made about the outer world that are inconsistent with it.

Religion is not older than agriculture. Before there was religion, there was reverence towards those who learned about plants and medicine. Over time as they improved medicine, the older generations of healers and life givers were remembered and their practices ritualized. We need to consider words like admire, praise, revere, etc instead of worship

You had me until the end, brother. I would argue that there are several religious apologists who have stood their ground in debates with atheists and won. There are plenty of theological *and* philosophical arguments that one could make for the existence of God, but we don’t give apologists any air time to make their arguments fairly and in good faith.

What all my studies and meditations have shared with me about religion and its use: it is a practice of letting go. Giving the reigns to somthing greater. Now with God being dead we must decide if our fellow humans are "worthy" of such bestowment. Can we let go, knowing it's another human who will catch us, who has faults, is imperfect. Once we decide an imperfect gaudian is better than no guardian at all we know grounded peace. We expect less, we "know" less but trust and enjoy more. In so doing we embody religion it's self with our acts. Be them kind or malevolent. Let go and give over fate to the wheel of stimulus and expression. Let your path be as open as you dare. For the only true fear we must fear is the fear of others within others.

Ancient Kemet and other great empires were not governed by religion, Afrikan empires were governed by Spirituality. Religious laws were there to assist with day to day disputes within the community. Religion today is a mixture of misunderstood spiritual concepts and the laws that existed amongst Afrikan people. Europeans corrupted religion because of a lack of understanding of these concepts
@alexgonzo5508

In my estimation the reason religious people suffer less from depression is because most religious people are ignorant i'm sorry to say, and ignorance is bliss. Intelligent people suffer more from depression because they can see problems others can't, and also because the statistics are proportionally skewed (way more religious people than non-religious) . Studies have found that higher intelligence is associated with more mental illness, including depression and anxiety. Being religious makes it easier to find a community or support network since the average person is religious in some way, not so easy for atheists. More than eight in ten people identify with a religious group, representing about 84% of the world population of 6.9 billion in 2010. The religious impulse is part of human nature i agree, but human nature has not evolved sufficiently to use it rationally. The healthy part of religion is not in its dogma but in its access to community, and that's it, but that community is very often toxic to an individual's reason and freedom of mind. Logic... the Logos is my religion, i believe in the trinity of Logic, Mathematics, and Science. Mother matter, and father pattern. The light of Logic is the light of God. I believe that religion can be reinterpreted in a rational manner, and we can finally leave childish ways behind. There is nothing healthy about an adult that still believes in Santa Clause.
@nexusvoid314
@nexusvoid314 8 месяцев назад
But there are fictions that you believe in that are considered healthy no? Human rights for example, nothing in science tells us that human rights really "exist", they only exist because we believe in them. Borders on maps are also fictional, so why would you claim that we should discard fictions if human society is grounded on them?

Interesting. But the problem in the relation between science and religion is a *real* problem, not a false dichotomy. The problem occurs when religion vilifies science and denies its statements, indirectly promoting ignorance as a virtue. And this state occurs more often than not, with the notable exception of certain historical periods of Christianity and of early Islam (but not later Islam), and it occurs only because Natural Philosophy (various pre-Science philosophy and early science in West) or Science bears some societal prestige that competes with religion, and only when religion provides a regulated inner debate.

Not to overlook that any observances of any ghosts or goblins, combined with any sort of rituals and meditative processes, ceremonial, and social constructs will have the same calming effects on those who need their minds to be herded into a passive and harmonious existence. If you provide a group of congregants and impressive trappings, a well rounded program of ceremonies and fantastical and affirming beliefs, any mass hypnosis will do the job.

The Bible is not a reliable historical source because it does not meet the standard criteria of source reliability used by historians. The Bible is not, as many believers assume, eye witness testimony. Reliable sources are generally based on authors who were eye witnesses to an event (i.e. it is a primary source). Since any particular source may be fabricating their story, multiple independent sources are usually required for confidence. Establishing the lack of author biases, including religious motivations, is also necessary if a work is to be read at face value. The Bible satisfies none of these requirements. Based on historical and archaeological research, there are known historical inaccuracies in the Bible. The Bible is considered Mythological by most historians. Historians know the Gospels are largely or entirely myths because they share the same characteristics in that they are an apparently normal story except: The text is structured to convey an underlying meaning, usually to convey some Political or Value System, Using symbols that are familiar the intended audience. Refers to or retells other myths and stories but often some aspects are changed to make a specific point. Historical improbabilities, occurrence of miracles or people acting unrealistically. Lack of corroborating evidence. People do more research on their Cars and Homes they buy. But not on the religion they live life by... Blind Obedience is a Dangerous Thing... Christianity may be considered a religion, but it was actually developed and used as a system of MIND CONTROL to produce Slaves that believed God decreed their Slavery. DOING REAL RESEARCH WILL SHOW YOU IT'S ALL BEEN A LIE... And “NO” you can't use the Bible to prove the Bible. That's not how “TRUTH” works. That's using a book of LIE'S to tell false TRUTHS...

Ok. A lot off people here have gone off the rails thinking time is kept by movies. Im here to break your ass back into reality. We keep our history through LITERATURE. And the most compelling story with the most witnesses. The life of a man named Jesus christ was written by the Hebrews, Greek, Roman's, and Africans. This is good you can look this up. You should look into that story before giving praise to this man's thoughts. See if he was in line with what happened instead of thinking they were too stupid to describe what they were talking about. The Bible has giants, talking creatures and what seems like ancient ideas because our western society doesn't see it the same so we are quick to say it's everything but what was written. Jung never advocated for a person to hold to the religion they grew up with unless they truly believed in it in some way, that it spoke to them. What he wrote was „modern man“ who has abandoned religion has the difficult task of finding their own religion within their own psyche. He believed that in the absence of religion the psyche would compensate and that we ought to pay attention to that compensation and make meaning from it. By paying attention to dreams and fantasies and our own life Individuation process. It is also very strange that today some Christian denominations are actually more literalist than the Catholic in the Middle Ages. This is a demonstrable fact as they believed much of the Bible was allegorical. Early Christian writers like Origen of Alexandria thought it was childish to believe in the Bible literally, such as the creation story. Now certain denominations build creationist museums, an idea which was laughable in 180AD.

There is an important dimension that is missing here. Carl Jung, unlike Freud, was not a materialist or physicalist. He was accused by some psychologists of 'psychologism', i.e., reducing certain phenomena to the psyche. But this fails to acknowledge that Jung was a metaphysical idealist: he thought that mind or consciousness is the fundamental reality. The collective unconscious, for instance, is the cosmic mind, to which we are all connected. Therefore, from Jung's point of view the external world of matter is a projection of consciousness, and as such is less real than consciousness. In a relation of x to y in which y is wholly dependent on x we can say that x is more real than y. So, there is a sense in which the archetypes in consciousness are more real than the external world.

God is both "out there" and "in here". God permeates everthing. And even though we ourselves are well beyond our own fathoming, there remains much else beyond our capacity to fully understand that must exist outside of and beyond ourselves. The fundamental recognition of God, in my opinion, begins with the apprehension that an individual, with a single mind and possible "free will" (with the possibility to alter the nature of future reality through "choice"), is yet part of an much greater and encompassing system. That ultimately everything is information, and "information is everything". That all physical processes are ultimately informational processes, that mind itself must be some kind of informational process, and that, even as we as individuals are embedded within a much greater physical reality, the informational processes corresponding to our intelligences are similarly embedded and emersed within a much vaster intelligence.

It seems incredibly silly to me to blame depression in an industrialized society on lack of religion. You're made to be a small cog in a large apparatus that consumes for the sake of it and profits those that own it mostly and you get some token compensation. It's not fulfilling work most of the time. It isn't hard to see why people aren't happy in that world. The fact that religion makes a false reality for people to hide in doesn't mean it was the solution. Every time you say something about science you're as wrong as someone can be. Science and religion are as opposed as two things can be. They provide tools to probe questions that plague us. Their views on HOW to think and arrive at answers are so fundamentally opposite it's such a joke when people say they don't overlap. Religion was born of the intellectuals of the past. That we can see the rampant fallaciousness of religion now is why it can't hold the sway it used to. Unless you view science as beakers and measurements only that statement is utter garbage and is just a regurgitation of faith assumptions that surround you. It is a religious position to say it goes where science does not. They both walk out to conclusions using logic but religion starts with false premises. Science is actually the tools of thinking themselves not just a guy in a lab. They fundamentally oppose each other because actually knowing the way science causes you to think will force you to confront how backwards and fallacious religious thinking is. Just because religions assert garbage with no way to prove it and reason from there, doesn't mean they can dodge science. That's just an assertion from a faith standpoint or the regurgitation of someone else's faith assumption because you don't know what you're talking about. It's about how they train you to think. They share that space and they are opposite in conclusion. Science falsifies the fuck out of religion. It's just a shame emotion overrides that for most people, and the rest have no idea what's going on anyway and go off what they are told by authority figures. If you believe that garbage statement, you really don't have a clue what science is. It's built to fight our biases and relies on trying to disprove a theory until it cannot be disproved. Religion tells you to even question the dogma is a sin. Look at how they ask you to look for answers, don't regurgitate what a man in a robe and a pointy hat told you.

Reading the books of the New Testament, we probably asked ourselves more than once: *"Why 2000 years we do not see those miracles that accompanied the Сhurch of Christ in the I century, as described in the New Testament?"* Why do the so-called preachers of Christ have to prove that Jesus really existed and atheists boldly deny the historicity or divine origin of Christ? Maybe because the Сhurch of Christ has not existed for 2000 years? The Сhurch does not exist in the form in which it is presented in the books of the New Testament, but there are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other christian sects claiming to be the place of the Church, but they not have the only thing that distinguishes the divine from the human and is characteristic of just the Сhurch of Christ -the reinforcement of the word with signs, that is, miracles (Mark 16:15-20). Therefore, some researchers doubt the historicity of Christ, and some of them are not opposed to declaring him a an ordinary philosopher, teacher. But even if Jesus were an ordinary philosopher, his disciples would be ordinary followers of Jesus. And they would not dare to write about the miracles that not only Jesus, but also his disciples, could perform. In this world, the great fertility of atheism can be explained by the fact that there is no main opponent of critics of the Bible - the Church. If there were the Church in our time as described by the authors of the New Testament books, where miracles are performed, the sick are healed, where prophesied, and the dead are raised, no one would doubt the historicity of Christ. Then there would be the same controversy throughout the world as in the first century - Jesus the Son of God or the false prophet who seduces the world by miracles. As a result, we can say that the emergence and development of christian sects and atheism was the result of the fact that over the 2000 years the Сhurch of Christ did not exist. Find *"The Mystery about the Church of Christ"* video on RU-vid. The video reveals the prophecy of the disappearance and reappearance of the Church of Christ before the End of the World. Watching this video will give hope to all who sincerely seek God and will interest those who are not too lazy to think freely. Edvard ZV Yes all miracles that God Almighty gave Jesus and all his colleagues who were prophets and messengers before him were true no doubts about them. But the concept of Jesus peace and bless be upon him had been changed and diluted by corrupt people who followed satan that Jesus was son of God because He was born without father and because of his miracles such as raising the the dead are godly characteristics. The reality is that Adam was created without father and without mother and that did not make him God of son of God. Again there were plenty prophets were given miracles like the ones were given to jesus PBBU. Since the Church diviated from the right path that is why it has nothing to do with correction of humanity and challenging with satanic Liberals and eithists. That is naked reality. If you like check Islamic religion. You will understand the Jesus himself and rest of revelations from God Almighty.

Or a psychological bias with roots as deep as human concience. We need to believe because our somewhat intelligent brain demans explanation of what the fuck is going on here. Religion is just an easy way to explain because it satisfies our fears and the need for superstition. It contradicts however, the real scientific facts - systematic, documented, retested, overviewed, objectivelly classified and put in a shelf with other knowledge that we have. Over the centuries of research of intelectuals (not the majority unfortunatelly). We know that the idea of god creating this world is a complete opposite of what we know about universe. I can continue and continue on why religion should not overshadow thinking. There has been perhaps an increase in suicides over those centuries, but thats reality. Accept the reality. U dont need a father, find hope within yourself, be a kind man/woman. No need for religions to be moral.. "Brief history of time" is a good read on why is religion insignificant. On grand scale of the time of the universe alone, as we know it. It only feeds deprived souls. If i start thinking that theres god now, who loves me, i feel good ofcourse, and thats the effect for our lone souls. But its all just words from a book. There had been thousends of religions, and there will be thousends more, in an enourmous timespan from now. Religions are born then they die. And it takes centuries to wipe the brain-disc of the indoctrinated cultures all over the world. Like it takes generations for societies to "forget" fully an old political regime. Anyways. Think big guys, religion is simple.

You were depressed because you were fighting the collective unconscious of your previous faith and the people gave you a hard time as they noticed you were indifferent and you didn’t do as they did hence making your life a living hell which is why you left however you aren’t depressed because you haven’t pondered on the mystery of this world, you just want to be free from the collective rules and live a blissful life as an atheist

Well…Then according to what is said here the greatest center of religion should be Hollywood which manufactures, promotes and makes a nice profit off of the world mythology, religion (From monotheism, polytheism, Greek mythology, gods of war, the heroes journey to the god of wine and hedonism of Dionysus…my agent will contact you if I have forgotten any) and ancient tales of adventure and conquest…The unconscious unleashed into dark theaters and living rooms where it seems even more familiar than ordinary familiar…and most know not why. When Star Wars was released In the seventies people would leave the theater and then get back on the line for the next showing…which was three blocks long…and not know why…for three days in a row.🔥🪿🔥
