In the films they outright state they are NOT a democracy, but if you go by the clues alone then it's rather more akin to a Citizen Stratocracy, with republic-like traditions and an oligarchical hierarchy with representation through military service. The difference between a Citizen and a Civilian is explained to us during the high school scenes, but it is clear that such differences don't exclude the majority of liberties. Through dialogue we find out that Citizen enrolment is very much optional, and even openly rejected (Rico's father), they simply don't get a say in the course of leadership. Honestly, not a bad idea AT ALL, and it's my best hope for humanity in the next centuries. Democracy just doesn't cut it

If the math is there: It’s 3-1 odds for every bug, maybe 5-1 odds (5 bugs for every 1 trooper.) The bugs probably produce warriors faster than recruits sign up to the federation.

In the book, a 1000-to-1 KDR would explicitly still be a net win for the bugs, and they don't have to train. The bugs are all born soldiers.

@Pwl9771 Yeah it is honestly amazing how people don't realise it. He literally repeats Razceks exact words while he was an officer, the individual is gone. He is quite literally a cog in the machine that a former friend sees as little more then a tool for fodder. Its a scary story as we see that even the brightest(carmen and carl) and the more questioning(Rico) can be turned into cogs that will live and die as if they were nothing.

In the books. Every marine can kill 10k bugs and it still won’t make a diff, the population diff is that high, additionally they have no learning curve, they learn genetically, where as we learn my reading

Jump packs with chain guns and racks of nukes tend to be highly effective. Only it takes millions of credits and years to train one trooper while the bugs spawn a new brood weekly/monthly depending on “egger” availability.

The film was funny but a disgrace to the book. The book very much describes a functioning democracy, just not everyone is allowed to vote. Verhoeven was an idiot to direct the movie as a fascist parody, because the book was not fascist at all

It's a misunderstood film - especially if you take it at face value - it's actually a comment on militarism and facism. It's really a dark comedy.

@@davy_K You can watch this film from a number of political vantage points which is fascinating. The script writer in the DVD commentary noted that this society actual works with both racism and sexism completely eliminated. It's not undemocratic either. You can vote but you have to earn the right through service. But like you said it can also be watched as a dark parody of what a fascist 'utopia' would be like.
