Carl Marr was born in Milwaukee in 1858, of German heritage. His skills were early recognized by his parents, and his father was also a craftsman. He set out to Germany to further his skills after a brief study with a local artist in his home state. He was quick to rise to the top of his skills. He was so popular in Germany that he would later be asked to be director of the school, which no doubt became a reason he remained there for the greater part of his life. He did come home for visits and in his later years he decided to make a big impression on the art world and for four years worked on his now-famous 'The Flagellants" painting, an epic portrayal of the plague that occurred in Italy in the centuries before. Carl von Marr was a master of all venues as we will see here.
