Her arms are so human during her hops on pointe. She is as a girl living in the forest rather than a ballerina. This is what makes her a ballerina to me.

Thank you for posting the most nuanced Giselle ever! Notice how Fracci keeps her arms relaxed and at her sides from 1:18-1:45 when she's doing the 'hops' en pointe. Dancers often sing along, w/ea. beat, "I'm dancing but shouldn't be for Mama and Albrecht." The stillness of her arms is a unique and subtle way to express, "look mama, I'm not straining and won't die from my weak heart" (which she does.) Blowing the kiss to Albrecht mid-way puts Fracci over-the-top as the ultimate Giselle.
La Fracci is one of the top two or three Giselle's of all time in my opinion. Compare this youthful, beaming creature in her first act to the the ghostly maiden of the second act - almost like it's not the same person dancing (and yet two halves of a whole somehow). Genius.
in Italy we have a lot of bad people, we're famous for mafia and Berlusconi... But this videos make me truly say yes, I'm proud of my nation... and I wish in the future we will have millions like Carla.

Sublime! I have seen many interpretations of this role but this is by far the best. Fracci's dance is magic, becomes a true reflection of Giselle's feelings. Fracci's movements are so expressive, fluid and full of temper at the same time. I love the movements of her arms while she makes those little steps on her point shoe (sorry, I do not know how you call this step in ballet, I am just a ballet lover), she looks so natural. Amazing. Thank you for uploading this video. It is a real pearl.

I study piano, know ballet superficially mostly for the music, and love Carla Fracci as Giselle. Most of us in performing arts criticize too much, spend too much time making everyone including ourselves unhappy, but most of all forget to just relax and soak in the good, however little, in each and every performance.

I usually can't sit and watch older dance vids because it's so drastically different from our standards today but I actually enjoyed this one. I agree with you about how we shouldn't compare them. Although some of them really make you wonder what exactly the standard was back then.
I doubt anyone today could match her. Her technique is rock solid but it takes a back seat to her charm and character. She makes it look simple and natural. Just incredible.
5 PAOLO BORTOLUZZI non erano secondi a nessuno .non conoscendo la sua eta' non ho idea se lei ha visto fracci dal vivo negli anni 70 ,ma le assicuro che se i suoi immensi partners la valorizzavano lei valorizzava tutti loro . a proposito un grande peccato che a parte il breve pezzo nel portiere di notte non esistano filmati di amedeo amodio danzatore indimenticabile e grande virtuoso olltre che grande caratterista .ENRICO la spezia.
4 fracci per i suoi tempi aveva una tecnica di tutto rispetto ,non una virtuosa ad oltranza ma pur essendo un tragedienne ed una danzatrice di vocaziona romantica aveva un bagaglio tecnico perfettamente in linea col suo tempo e con lo stile del suo tempo .mi creda anche all'estero era ed e' immensamente stimata anche in piazze dove non si regalava niente a nessuno ,e nelle quali per brillare ci si misurava con i maggiori nomi del momento ,e fracci ,come del resto il troppo presto dimenticato
Davvero! L'espressivita, gli emoziono sono i fattori importantissimi. Balletto e'un ARTE, non e un sport, neanche circo! Senza d'espressione degli emozioni e il spirito , cuore e un vieto "show" della tecnica, dello physico.. ma nient' altro.

I more prefer racy and temperament dancing, but ... Fracci is so beautiful, she has so lovely face ... and enjoys herself and makes us to enjoy her :) This is absolutely beautiful
Ezt a variációt még rajta kívül nem láttam mással! Szenzációs! A ma leghíresebb balerinái közül még senkivel nem láttam ezt a variációt és ha hasonlót igen az sem közelíti meg Őt! Úgy tünik hogy a mai nagy sztárok technikai képeségeit ez meghaladja!
Apprezzo moltissimo tutti i suoi partners e mi consenta di ricordarne alcuni da lei, ahimè, dimenticati: Henning Kronstam, Amedeo Amodio, Paolo Bortoluzzi e soprattutto il danese Erik Bruhn ... sicuramente hanno contribuito a valorizzare la signora Carla. Non scordiamo che è nata nel 1936 .... la danza è sempre in evoluzione ma non si può accanirsi a calcare le scene anche ultrasettantenne! I ballerini che hanno il buongusto di "lasciare" hanno tutta la mia ammirazione.
io di anni ne ho 58 e ho iniziato a studiare danza classica all'età di otto e non solo in Italia ma soprattutto a Parigi dove la Fracci non sapevano nemmeno chi era ... ma al di là di questo diciamo che sui gusti non si può discutere. Cordiali saluti
Giselle es una de mis obras favoritas. Me recuerda mucho a Cinthya Ricalde, una estupenda bailarina yucateca, que desgraciadamente fue asesinada. La extraño tanto, y más cuando veo estas escenas que ella supo sacar limpiamente. ¡Salud Cinthya, donde quiera que estés!
Io da una ballerina voglio vedere la tecnica, le gambe, i giri, la grazia, la leggerezza e l'interpretazione, non solo l'interpretazione.... Che diamine!
Se non vede la leggerezza ela grazia in CarlaFracci ha bisogno di un oculista! Quanto alle gambe attaccate agli orecchi, a me personalmente danno fastidio, come se la ballerina fosse concentrata su se stessa per mostrare una performance atletica, anziché entrare nello spirito del suo personaggio.
non mi pareva propio :) il problema è che la gente non si rende conto che quello che vede oggi è un'evoluzione, un'altra cosa. Fracci aveva un'ottima tecnica di quegli anni non quella post Guillem. Ma è inutile dirlo... parole al vento. Se sta gente vedesse ora la Fonteyn?

Non si puó fare polemica su tutto e tutti ! La Fracci é stata una grandissima dal punto di vista espressivo ! Ci sono state ballerine tecnicamente più stupefacenti più atletiche etc! Ma la Fracci cattura l'attenzione dello spettatore anche solo camminando! Che poi avrebbe dovuto avere il buon gusto di ritirarsi a tempo debito .... Questo é vero! Ma é un errore che fanno in molti...
@Kiss4ever1991 ma come potete continuare a paragonare la tecnica e il modo in cui si ballava negli anni 70 con oggi ?? è impossibile ! adesso se non hai le gambe attaccate alle orecchie non ti puoi neanche presentare in scena, tutti a guardare colli del piede assurdi.... non se era meglio prima o adesso : è diverso e basta. devi pensare che era il '68...la tecnica è cambiata molto e le ballerine ora pesano 10 se non 20 kg in meno di quelle dell'epoca della fracci...senza contare che ambeta ha zero espressività, mentre quando guardi la fracci in questo ruolo non è se stessa, ma giselle in persona

@musiccritic1910 Oh gosh, I couldn't agree with you more. Her pasted on smile doesn't make it real at all. From 1:20 the meaningless hobbling along is more like an acrobatic exercise. The last act has her face in a permanent ghoulish expression that is somewhat reminiscent of Fonteyn's in that act, but falls really short in authenticity. Those who are in love with Fracci as Giselle haven't seen or do not appreciate Ulanova, Makarova, Fonteyn and Kirkland.
3 se lei intendendeva stimmatizzare questo tipo di comportamento sono pienamente con lei ,pero' dire che fracci non sia stata a suo tempo una grandissima danzatrice questo ,mi sembra ingeneroso ed ingiusto .io ho 59 anni ed ho cominciato a occuparmi di balletto a 16 anni e le garantisco di avere visto tutto e tutti da allora ad ora ,e fracci a suo tempo era tra le divine ,su questo non c'e' dubbio.mi permetta di dissentire anche sulla sua scarsa considerazione dell'aspetto prettamente tecnico
