Carlito's Way was Al Pacino's gangster follow up with director Brian De palma, for me its one of the most underappreciated films of the 90s and one of the best gangster movies ever!
Carlito's Way is a 1993 American crime drama film directed by Brian De Palma, based on the novels Carlito's Way (1975) and After Hours (1979) by Judge Edwin Torres. The film adaptation was scripted by David Koepp. It stars Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, Luis Guzman, John Leguizamo, Jorge Porcel, Joseph Siravo, and Viggo Mortensen.
The film stars Pacino as Carlito Brigante, a Puerto Rican criminal who vows to go straight and to retire in paradise. However, his criminal past proves difficult to escape, and he unwittingly ends up being dragged into the same activities that got him imprisoned in the first place. The film is based mainly on After Hours, but used the title of the first novel to avoid it being confused with Martin Scorsese's 1985 film of the same name. This is the second film collaboration between Pacino and De Palma, after 1983's film, Scarface.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. Each scene unfolded like an opera. This film has a fantastic rhythm and never misses a beat. Pacino at his finest, okay a tie with Michael Corleone. The film deserved Oscar nominations across the board.

Thanks so much and yes of course I agree a great 15 final minutes which are kind of the opposite of Scarface in a way but just as tense and exciting

Recently got the Arrow Video 4k release of this and it's gorgeous, the best this film has ever looked. I recall owning the VHS back in the 90s and have the normal bluray as well. Such amazing performances and steadily even characterization where literally ALL characters get their just do and the film couldn't be done even if 1 of them was plucked out. Excellent film.

Both Casino 🎰 and Carlito's Way are basically the underrated counterpart movies to both Goodfellas and Scarface.

Completely agree. this film is highly underrated. . . . I would argue we care more about him because of his compassion, unlike many other gangster movies. PS. The great irony is that it was Pacino who approached Brian De Palmer about this role, after taking the time to read the book, and then try to get a movie script worked out for this film.

Great analysis Jim. I like the way that as Penn's manipulative character reveals itself you become more and more worried about Carlito. There is a great court scene at the beginning when Pacino says he has been "reassimilated, reinvigorated, rejuvenated and reformed!". He then asks Dave Kleinfeld to take a bow! The book "After Hours" is well worth a read also.

Pacino and Penn work well together, with Penn been a sleazeball antics brings down carlito. Their close relationship between them is tightly written and it is Pacino/carlito who fully realises Penn's/Dave's downfall through coke & financial abuse of his mob bosses. Carlito roundly played, in three dimensional weight unlike Tony Montana who is clearly two dimensions. Patrick Doyle's beautiful score. De Palma fully understood the gangster genre, and as you say a wicked final act. GT late James rebhorn as prosecutor and Louis gussman as Pacino's traitorous right-hand man. Also most of cast of scarface pop up in various scenes. Neglected classic

Yep. Also with Scarface I've always felt the ending while cool he did it to himself, while Carlitos Way he is trying to escape the life and you feel for him and root for him even though we'll you know.

Penelope Ann Miller was the actress's who played Gail(Carlito's love ❤️ interest). Two of her famous movies were "Adventures In Babysitting(with Elisabeth Shue: The Karate Kid)" and "Kindergarten Cop(with Arnold Schwarzenegger)."
