Carlito's Way was released on 4K UHD in October 2021 and this has been my first chance to finally have a look at it. It's a good 'un. Not the best 4K we're ever going to see but an good electronic reproduction of the original 35mm film.
Sound has been re-worked to DTS-X. Image aspect ratio is the 'Scope format of approximately 2.40:1. 4K disc immediately perceptibly superior to the Blu-ray largely owing to HDR and on this disc, it is HDR10+.

Brian DePalma in an interview called this his MASTERWORK. An Artist working with all elements at peak. Pacino and everyone brought their A-game. This is a film to be savored. They truly don't make them like this ANYMORE.

I'm glad he now knows how good it is because I expect the critical reception really upset him back in 1993/94. Good films usually come to the top even if it takes a few years. John.

I went with a friend of mine to see this in the cinema when it came out as we weee both fans of Pacino, and it’s a great movie. Sean Penn gives his best ever performance I think and the tension is cranked throughout the film. Another great review John 🙏

The more I think about Carlito's Way the more I appreciate how everything is done so well apart from some of the continuity between shots. If different shots had have been selected it might not have been so good though so I expect the film editor and De Palma knew they were compromising. John.

Great review John. Carlito's Way is my favourite De Palma film and one of my all time favourites also. The thing that I like most about this film is it has a heart and I'm really rooting hard for Carlito and Gail to escape to the paradise. The final section starting in the club and ending beside the train is just masterful filmmaking. "Sorry boys, all the stitches in the world can't sew me back together" leaves me a blubbering mess each time. I think over time it has become more appreciated and it's easy to see why. Love Heat and Carlito's Way, not sure what I would prefer. In terms of other De Palma I watched Carrie last week. The Arrow Blu-ray was fantastic and a big improvement over the old Universal disc. I think it's coming to 4K in the US with Kino Lorber but I'll probably wait until it's in a sale before purchasing. Planes, Trains & Automobiles is another 4K I'm looking forward to as the Blu-ray was quite poor and they're doing a brand new 4k scan.

Carrie is the film that really brought Brian De Palma to the attention of the world. A wonderful film and probably even better than the book. The Untouchables, Dressed To Kill, Carlito's Way and a few others I haven't even seen yet are all all masterful film making. Mission To Mars is wonderful until the appearance of the inevitable, hokey alien. John.

Back in the 80s and 90 in Sweden we had a weekly tv program called ’Filmjournalen’ (the movie journal). They showed trailers and talked about past, present and upcoming movies. That's pretty much what I wanted to do initially Dunn but you just can't get hold of the right people to get the necessary permissions to do such a thing. If I was making these things for GB News or some other media startup then we'd have a chance because as soon as you mention 'television' people sit up and take notice. Get more views than a telly programme on RU-vid and they're not interested. Universal caused me to stop using clips from trailers which was a shame but it's their product so it's up to them. John.

I finally got around to finishing the book it was based on recently, which is sprawling and convoluted; it could have made a decent TV series. The Blu-ray in this pack is pretty good Roy but it looked like a low contrast print to me, which I suppose most video releases were done from up until 4K, came about. But other than the odd slightly washed out look here and there, it was sharp and better than we could ever have expected. The 4K looks like a film print though so that's as good as it's ever going to get so the Blu-ray is surplus to requirements now and because the extras are on both discs, rather pointless including it. I don't know if Carlito's Way is in the specific gangster film genre Dave but if it is, I think it's the best gangster film I've ever seen. The only one that might beat it in my opinion is The Untouchables. Many will cite The Godfather films but they're not really my cup of tea. With regard to the sound, I expect your Blu-ray would sound just the same in here. It's not a wham bam type of film so any surround sound has to be subtle and what I heard throughout Carlito's Way matched the imagery on screen perfectly. Some films can be quite distracting with a sound stage that takes your attention away from what you should be watching but certainly not with this one which kept me focused on the story and the characters throughout. I now have a shot-list so I can look at it while in the booth and get some great shots for the upcoming video. Drive on 35mm was very nice, the color grade was extremely similar to the great second sight 4K disc, except the sound on the 35mm sounded fantastic, and not as good as the 4K disc (although the 4K disc sound track is great, I found the 35mm track sound a lot clearer and had a better mix). I recently saw the new Halloween film "Halloween Ends" and thought it was one of the worst films I've seen all year. which is extremely unfortunate, I would have rather waited for the writers to come up with a better story than have the release date in October. oh well "Carrie" was also announced for a 4K disc a couple days ago, so perhaps when that is released you may do a review and could talk about those super 8 prints you own? @@moviecollector5920 We were so fortunate to live through such an era of creativity on so many levels (story, characters, cinematography) & can only hope a semblance of that can return amongst a landscape of film with little substance in comparison. @moviecollector5920 Год назад
@@TheEthNick A lot of people really liked Dune so you're certainly not alone there. I struggled with the rather lacklustre look to it all but I know why that was now so it should look a lot better the next time I watch it. Last Night In Soho is my favourite of recent years and Le Mans '66 but there have been plenty of other first class films too. I expect the Covid-19 years have caused the major studios to seriously consider the films to fund because cinemas were only really safe for younger people for much of the time over the last two and a half years. It's possible a more mature audience will return now that most of us have had the lurgy so we'll just have to see. I do have concerns about the lowering of image quality standards because many people on here tell me they get a better picture on their telly. Whilst I don't think that is entirely fair because no television beats a big screen projection, I did go through something similar from the early 2000's and I pretty much gave up entirely on cinema about 2006. I couldn't see the point in watching a video projection in the West End cinemas and so I've been careful to ensure that a film is being screened before I hit the road or book tickets. I can't get up any enthusiasm for local cinemas with 2K video projection. John.

I flew to Los Angeles to visit a friend about a month ago and I got a chance to see a midnight screening of Pulp Fiction in 35mm at New Beverly Cinema (Quentin Tarantino’s movie theater) and it was quite a treat which gets me excited for the 4K release. My friend and I drove past the Cinerama Dome theater (not on purpose we were just driving around) but it was boarded up and after reading more about it, it looks like it’s been closed for a while and won’t be back open until 2023. That’s a bummer because I would have loved to see something there too.

The Empire was always a very special place to see a film David. I've been to a lot of the top cinemas around the world but never saw anywhere as impressive as The Empire. Being a premiere cinema meant that we got to see master prints and 70mm blow-ups so the best possible quality that could ever be seen from 35mm. Computer animation started to cause a downgrade in overall image quality from the late 1990's but it wasn't catastrophic... until Star Wars Attack of the Clones was premiered in the Odeon adjacent to The Empire. That was shot on video and projected on a completely inadequate video projector. Every time a CGI shot came on screen the image blurred all across the entire width. It must have been a rendering fault back then but no one else noticed. The manager of The Odeon was amazed that no one else had spoken to him about it. That was when the rot set in and film studios knew that cinemagoers would happily put up with lower quality imagery that ultimately resulted in film distribution being replaced by video. The videos I saw in The Empire before I gave up on going were so lacklustre by comparison to the wonderful standards up to the mid-1990's that I lost interest. Fortunately, Carlito's Way was before all that and I remember a fabulous, big screen projection in the most wonderful cinema that ever existed. Such a shame you couldn't have been there too. John.

@@moviecollector5920 Thanks very much for the detailed response, John! It really takes me into a idea of what it was like then. I have experience of cinemas since the 80's, and the magic of watching and listening to 35mm (one of which was a film I know you like, Batman Returns), but nothing like that. I'd have loved to have seen Master Prints. Having sadly only visited The Empire for the first time this year, I'm curious about the IMAX Cinema being reduced. I've read that the right side was partition walled into a second cinema in 2013 (the so-called SuperScreen, which isn't that super). Looking at photos online of the Main Auditorium (now the IMAX) in 1990, it looks like there were rows of seats in front of the banked ones. This is impossible now as the screen is where those seats were. I was just wondering is that how you remembered it, because in 90 it looks massive.

We always tried to get seats R13 and 14 which were on the right hand bank of seats but just in front of the middle aisle that ran horizontally across the auditorium mid-way down and were the two seats right on the aisle. I don't suppose those seats still exist. Shame they didn't auction off the seats because I'd have tried to get that pair! John.

@@moviecollector5920 Thank you very much for the link, John! It's incredible to see The Empire as it was. Sadly where the entrance door is in the video is where the screen is level with now. By my count that's 16 rows of seats that have been removed. As I understand it the IMAX screen is bigger than the screen previously there, but even without knowledge of the cinema being reduced I could tell the screen was in incorrect proportion to the seats. The issue is you have a bigger screen but much nearer. To actually take in everything on the screen you have to sit in the penultimate or last rows, but even then it feels close. For all it's chanting about being one of the biggest screens in the UK I wish they'd have seats further back. I don't know why they brought the screen forward and what they're doing with the space behind the new screen.

@@davidjames579 I haven't been since seeing Prometheus as an awful video projection in 3D which made it even worse because the little glasses weren't big enough to be able to see the whole of the screen in one go. That was still the original auditorium though and I hope that section at the front is still there acting as a studio cinema on its own. I believe it's the rear, steeply raked rear seats that have had a giant screen put in front of them and being passed off as IMAX. I find it all too upsetting after so many great times down there in what I thought was the greatest cinema I''d ever seen a film in. But it's a business and with cinema dying a slow death (that may have just been sped up thanks to the pandemic!) they've got to do what they have to to stay in business and turn a profit. The IMAX name is being used to try to encourage people to visit but it won't fool people forever. I think cinema is taking the wrong path and giant 'Scope format screens are the way to go but with deep curves on them just like Cinerama and D-150 used to offer. Then cinema would be a different, vastly superior option to sitting at home watching netflix on a comparably tiny, flat home screen. But a lot depends on making films that adults want to see and that's another problem nowadays. John.

Carlito's Way is one of those films that so often gets overlooked. I loved it when I bought it in the late 1990s and watched it several times, but I strangely enough never bought it on DVD or Blu-ray. At art college in the 1990s, I considered some of the sequences to be practically a masterclass in great film editing. Where shot continuity is concerned, I suspect Brian de Palma has the same attitude as some of the filmmakers of old did towards cuts: look at the blatant continuity jumps in My Darling Clementine or The Maltese Falcon. He approximates where things should in the scene, but hopes the pace, acting and story will get the audience through it. De Palma evidently got away with it in the cinema, but the unforgiving nature of home cinema inevitably takes its toll and we tend to notice things sitting in a small setting with few people that we might not in an auditorium fulll of people. I've added this one to my list. Sorry to hear that the included the Blu-ray appears not be based on the 4K scan: I'll buy the 4K for future-proofing. Thanks John! :)
@moviecollector5920
@moviecollector5920 Год назад
The Blu-ray is good Dominic, it's just that the 4K is immediately, perceptibly superior so it's one of those where there is no question of the 4K being better. A lot of films still have similar continuity issues but I haven't seen many with so many obvious errors as this. It didn't spoil the film but it was a little distracting. It's unusual to have long, quiet dialogue sequences in films these days so I can imagine how many takes it took and in the end I suppose they just had to call it a day and put something together from what they got. I was fortunate enough to see this on a huge screen with DTS digital sound. It was a Friday night and the auditorium was sold out. WHAT A BLAST! For two + hours the suspense built and built until it was unbearable. When that first gun shot cracked to start the ending gunfight the entire theater screamed, partly out of excitement and shock and partly out of "Holy shit! That's loud!!" DTS sound had arrived. CARLITO'S WAY was terribly underappreciated by the critics, who had it all wrong. I have seen it multiple times over the years and will now order the 4K. Films like this simply can no longer be made. They are too risky because adults stay home and watch Netflix and HBO. Everything is bland PG-13 puke, lacking in realistic violence and especially sexuality. By the way, that scene early on between Pacino and Penn where they are drunk and saying something like "I love you man" generated lots of laughs when I saw it at the cinema. Who hasn't had such a moment? 😆

I too fear that film makers and studios are concentrating on the adolescent market because they are the only demographic still going to cinemas. More big earners like Top Gun Maverick are required which would have got me along to the West End if I could have found the time, but I wouldn't bother going to see a film at a local theatre any longer. If cinema was still screening film then I'd still be attending regularly but that's the path the film industry went down so that's what we're stuck with. I remember Carlito's Way looking absolutely fabulous on the huge Empire screen. Digital sound caused the volume to be turned up a little too loud even at The Empire but I suppose that might have been too compensate for the slightly more indiscernible dialogue. Sounds a bit like IMAX today. Perhaps it goes to show how people can be easily fooled. Gawd, now I've remembered that there were even THX approved VHS tapes. What a joke! THX is a sound standard and that's all it should have been. DTS started making in-roads into the home cinema market with their introduction onto A/V amps in about 1997 so that's possibly why THX tried to branch out.
