In memoriam (* 13 July 1924; † 25 July 2014)
I don't post often anymore because there isn't much I have that hasn't already been posted by others on youtube. But Carlo Bergonzi's art meant such a great deal to me, so I decided eventually to post this short tribute.
Selections from Aida, Ballo, and Trovatore, all from early 1960s Met performances. I would have added more but there is a 15 minute limit on my videos now.

He really was in his vocal prime by the early 1960s. Not only did he know how to use the voice, but he also has an artful phrasing, lots of coloristic variety and perfectly positioned accents. He knew how to shape a line on a long breath, has an exemplary clarity of diction, words placed immaculately on the tone, an authoritative use of portamento and acuti. He was an aristocratic type of tenor even if he didn't have the ringing top note notes of some of his rivals (Franco Corelli and Mario del Monaco). In this recording the diminuendo on the final note of "Celeste Aida" shows amazing vocal control. With the years the voice kept its volume, indeed as normal, increased slightly. The top-notes came somewhat more difficult and from the mid sixties on he would never sing a C anymore in performance but though there was no real squillo, there was nothing wrong with his A's and B's. The strange thing was the hauntingly beautiful colour of the middle register. The voice always was slightly less pure, but with getting elder, notwithstanding all those heavyweights, the middle voice got more honeyed, more sweeter.

I heard him often. He was the most elegant interpreter of Verdi's music I ever heard

“Best Tenor” is subjective, but “favorite tenor” is one’s personal fact and I must say Bergonzi is in my top 3. Amazing

Together with Richard Tucker, Bergonzi is my Verdi hero, as a tenor singer.

EL MAS GRANDE, EL MAS VERÍDICO EN SUS INTERPRETACIONES, UN TENOR CON UN FRASEO Y UN LEGATO INCOMPARABLES

He had the vocal key to getting through the passaggio in the beginning of the aria. It defeated Corelli and he always flatted.

Could never hear that guy breathe. How the heck did he do that? Greatest tenor of all time. If he had learned English better, HE would have been bigger than Pavarotti.

The finest Verdi tenor of the 20th century and that includes Caruso.

Really? I'm always curious what criteria a poster uses when making a statement such as yours. Have you ever heard Bergonzi sing with Caruso's acoustic technology or did you hear Caruso and Bergonzi live? Do you know that Caruso sang over 900 performances at the Met in an 18 year period to great reviews, where Bergonzi sang 330 performances in about a 35 year period at the Met to some not so good reviews in Aida and Trovatore but respectful to fine reviews in other operas? Did you know that Bergonzi was well respected in the opera world, but never considered greater than Caruso by any of his peers and including himself? Are you also aware that Bergonzi had an opaque top with the absence of squillo? Bergonzi was a terrific tenor, but your statement is ridiculous.
