But I think his son‘s similarity to Alban Berg was a constant humiliation to him; he killed himself as his boy whom he loved, became more popular conducting! I think he just couldn‘t take it and felt if he died it might stop the talk! Both his parents were suicides as was Carlos! When your life had taken a sad turn you got off! Carlos could not live without Stanka so he got off! Wasn’t he a gift to the planet?
Chi ha contestato Kleiber quella sera alla Scala sicuramente non era capace di capire la grandezza del personaggio. Erano ancora periodi in cui alla Scala si esigeva perfezione e "tradizione" e tutto ciò che usciva fuori da dei canoni spesso non sempre giusti era largamente criticato; ricordiamoci che quando il M° Ozawa diresse la sua prima opera alla Scala il M° Karajan gli disse "è un suicidio, ti faranno a pezzi". Certo era un pubblico troppo esagerato all'epoca ma questo mi fa riflettere e capire che però, allo stesso tempo, in pochi anni siamo passati all'estremo opposto: nessuno di fronte alle vere porcherie che vengono messe in scena (e non solo alla Scala) contesta più, ci va bene tutto, non siamo più capaci di distinguere le rappresentazioni orribili, da quelle mediocri, da quelle che sono dei capolavori... secondo me entrambi gli estremi sono un po' tristi
Ricordo perfettamente la diretta TV del 7 dicembre 1976... Un'esecuzione ciclopica...!!!! E altro non ho da aggiungere... Ozawa diresse in seguito Tosca Interessante lettura comunque.
Pensiero assolutamente condivisibile, sottoscrivo in pieno. Se solo pensiamo che ormai nei teatri d'opera, il pubblico proferisce acclamazioni in stile concerto pop star, fa capire perfettamente quanto ignorante sia diventato il pubblico, in perfetta linea con la società d'oggi.
No the greater the artist the greater the test; they want to be defeated by an artist with skill and guts, after all! The art is their passion and from all their artists they demand perfection! Kleiber was perfect and I bet they thought so, too!
I may be repeating or my comments disappeared but the loggianisti come with La Scala! They are often hungry often men who pay all they have for seats in the loggias! They are also fanatic opera lovers who never miss an opera! The loggianisti test all the new performers it’s expected! Some feel it’s a matter of whether the artist has a sense of humor and if he has the strength to handle them himself! Carlos clearly was well prepared he would have known exactly what to expect and his father would have given him advice! He was an aristocrat, after all, in music, born and bred for greatness he had a baton in his hands as a child and used it like part of his body! So don’t worry about whether the loggionisti were right or awful to give Carlos what most artists receive from the logginisti; it provided young Kleiber with a legendary incident and made his future stature secure! I found it hilarious! Loved it! He played the defiant prince to perfection!
I checked a book called "Carlos Kleiber, Angelo o demone" (Mauro Balestrazzi, L'Epos, 2006) : there are many Italian press reviews about Kleiber's Scala performances of 1976 (Othello, Rosenkavalier...). No interruption is mentioned (to me a sign that "loggionisti" were simply not taken into account). Kleiber gave 9 performances of Othello in Dec. '76/ Jan '77. He conducted many more times in Milan (Tristan in '78, La Bohème in '79...) I hope this answers your questions. Kind regards from Paris.
I have the video of the whole performance and it's an absolute wunderful, unique, great one - the best rendition of Otello I ever heard! What musical idiots, and what bad charakters!!!

This is what used to happen at La Scala when a conductor or singer didn't pay a fee to a particular fellow, who always appeared in the dressing room before a performance promising a great success - (with his hand stretched out for payment). Pavarotti and Kleiber were among the few who refused and this was always the result.

In a recent interview Chailly says he enjoys better a...let's say 'noisy' audience than one which automatically claps and says bravo to anything and anybody, which is the common situation of nowadays theater goers. I agree with the maestro. If you're scared, stay away from La Scala, if you're brave and confident, you'll succed there and everywhere. Io rimango basito come alla Scala siamo stati capaci di fischiare Callas, Pavarotti, Carlos Kleiber, anche Karajan una volta fu fischiato, quando invece in giro per il mondo questi immensi artisti hanno dato prova di essere ammirati e rispettati in toto, stecche incluse! Mi affascina la reazione alquanto signorile, del grandissimo Kleiber.... Io al suo posto avrei terminato l'esecuzione e me ne sarei andato!
Incredible that a genius like Kleiber would be heckled. But Fleming was booed for Lucrezia Borgia, Beverly Sills was threatened by the claque, so many others too. It’s almost a point of pride to be booed at La Scala!
From what I hear, it doesn't happen anymore. At least the 'claque' is no longer allowed backstage to extort money from the singers and have nowhere near the power they used to. Which is a good thing if what I hear is correct. I was very sad to hear how they booed my darling Mirella Freni after the Traviata in the mid '60's.
@@kennethwayne6857 I just attended a performance at La Scala for the first time, in June. I saw La Gioconda, and it wasn’t very good. I enjoyed being at La Scala, but the singers were third-rate. And they all got big applause! Not a single boo. So you’re right, it doesn’t happen anymore.
@@kennethwayne6857 To be honest, I just enjoyed being there! I'd always dreamt of going to La Scala, and I didn't care too much about the quality of the performance. Of course, it would've been great to see a great one! I also went to La Fenice. The performance was "Peter Grimes." I didn't fly to Italy to see an opera in Venice that I wouldn't bother with in the States. But it actually was quite a good performance! Go figure. And I saw a pretty bad performance of Nabucco at the Arena di Verona. The operas I've seen right here in the U.S. have been uniformly better than the ones I've seen in Italy, Paris, London.
Impensabile tenere un simile comportamento. Ammesso che vi siano state imperfezioni nell'esecuzione la reazione dei "loggionisti" è intollerabile, sopratutto se si ha dinanzi un genio come Kleiber ( molto probabilmente il più grande direttore di sempre). A 42 anni di distanza, semplicemente guardando questo filmato, ho provato un'immensa vergogna.
I loggionisti idioti di quella sera probabilmente erano composti in buona parte da coloro che 12 anni prima si erano permessi di fare lo stesso con - senza dubbio - il più grande direttore di ogni tempo, Herbert von Karajan, reo di aver messo le mani sulla Traviata. They are as traditional as La Scala; the real question is what will the performer do? It’s a test always and says everything for an artist what he does with them! No one takes them seriously but they are an essential test of an artists character! Carlos must have planned for this his father would have warned him he was a prince already though young! His gesture was terrifically classy; he isn’t surrendering, his "limp dick“ baton says this shop is closed if you do that again! It also says, I am much better than you are in my pose as a fragile boy making a rude gesture!

anyone comments it's incorrect, the "loggionisti" were contesting the scenography, not the director, obviously that it was a very horrible moment for Kleiber, but I think that the people that are in the hight part of La Scala are very competent and intelligent, and if they have decided to contest the opera there was a correct reason. please the theatre of la Scala is nothing without their "loggionisti"!!!!!
I was just busy defending their role at La Scala I am charmed by finding myself in such excellent company! I am fascinated by loggionisti I would have adored to go there just once! But I read a great deal and it tends to come alive!

@@carolvogelman5261 yes indeed, great title! Please write the book, or at least an article. I would love to understand the loggionisti better. Their treatment (in 1989) of Cheryl Studer and Chris Merritt in ‘I Vespri Siciliani’ seemed cruel, but those guys weren’t delivering the goods….
They didn’t want any limp princelings and Erich his father was a brilliant director! They would have seen Kleiber Sr. Who would have handled them with the same finesse Carlos shows! But he was only a very young man then! No harm in being tested and his reaction was superb!

But WHY would the public react this way? Was it because Kleiber's interpretation was so DIFFERENT than what they were used to? Were they just being "maligni" as the Italians say? What could cause this hatred of his work? Does anyone have an opinion? AND, did Kleiber ever return to Milan? How many performances of Othello did he do in Milan in 1976?
Not hate at all! All the newbies were treated to a test of some sort! Loggionisti are fanatic opera lovers they were simply goading him; saying c’mon pretty boy, live up to daddy! His father Eric Kleiber was utterly brilliant they not only didn’t want him to fail, they wanted him to defeat them, outclass them, and he damn well did! It’s a centuries old tradition! Non hate at all but also protecting the character of La Scala the strength of the institution and they help form that; they love it and being poor it’s how they live for the music! They undoubtedly wanted, demanded, he live up to his daddy’s name and more no student princes here! You can’t decide on this sort of issue from afar; it’s ingrained in the history of the place! I bet it has affected who stays to succeed there; a pretender would be exposed fast, I should think!
Milan has a lot of money, because they are an industrial city. The reason they don't LOOK LIKE Detroit is because of their long history. The present is less attractive than the best of their older buildings. I've only been to La Scala once, fifty years ago. The ushers were lushly dressed and the rich women in the expensive seats wore a lot of ostentatious jewelry. I assume the diamonds were real. I don't think the bad behavior of the audience comes from the expensive seats, but it's permitted.
La ragione per cui tantissimi grandi artisti hanno evitato ed evitano come la peste taluni luoghi infestati da certi "animaletti" belanti al pascolo. Non dimentichiamo che da quelle parti sono stati contestati in modo ingiustificato, incivile e plateale Geni incommensurabili dell'Arte musicale come Maria Callas e Herbert von Karajan. E mi fermo a queste cime assolute, perché la lista che segue è piuttosto lunghetta.
Quale parte del pubblico è quello" vero pubblico"? Quelli che, al modo molto scortese, non approvano Cleiber o quelli che dicono che dovrebbero essere zitti? Ultimi dominano fortemente..
Because it added nothing to our discussion..... When I listen to this La Scala performance--especially the first 12 minutes-- I am so heartbroken to hear how lazy some members of the chorus and many of the orchestra winds are. They seem to be carelessly warming up rather than being prepared to take Kleiber's thrilling tempi. Shameful really--no wonder someone says it sounds like a band. But both Freni and Domingo are on top of their art.
Porterò una mia esperienza personale. Qualche anno fa vidi al Verdi di Trieste un Don Pasquale. Tutti bravissimi eccezion fatta per il tenore che poveretto o non era in serata oppure non adatto al ruolo. Ricordo ancora la immensa civiltà del pubblico di questo teatro che all'uscita del tenore si limitò praticamente a non applaudire. Certo il gelo forse è peggio dei buh però questo dimostra l'eleganza nel contestare e invece l'essere quattro buzzurri solo capaci di fischiare. Cari signori imparate dal pubblico triestino che la classe non è acqua. Ps: tra l'altro tanti loggionisti manco sanno leggere uno spartito, figurarsi cosa possono capire di voci. Speriamo che un po' alla volta avvenga un ricambio generazionale perché ce n'è bisogno. PS: contestare un grandissimo direttore come Kleiber dimostra oltre che suprema ignoranza anche mancanza di cultura musicale.

A Vienna, a volte le cose sono simili.A Vienna, nel novembre 2022, il concerto da solista di Villazon è stato terribile, ma molti spettatori a Vienna hanno applaudito molte volte. Fingevano di capire cantare. Molto ipocrita.
This must have been HELL for Kleiber. The reason he didnt perform much : he was a perfectionist and also verry nevous ( it didnt show but he was). He could walk around nervously in his dressing room for hours before a concert/opera. Almost Neurotic. I bet internally his nerves were killing him at this moment. I would have turned and said: gentlemen there is a place for this kind of a behaviour. Its called the fishmarket, there you can yell as fishwives as much as you want. But here its an opera and here we have civilisation.
Dirò una cosa impopolare. Per quanto ami Kleiber (anche se lo conosco più per la direzione di Strauss che Verdi) il fatto che venga contestato indica come, oggi meno, l'opera lirica sia qualcosa di vivo, come il popolo italiano la senta come una parte di sé e chieda molto a chi mette mano a questa parte della sua anima; questa non è inciviltà è amore e passione per questa forma d'arte. Certo c'è anche un sacco di supponenza senza dubbio. C'è molto più amore però per la lirica in quei fischi che nelle platee educate americane o giapponesi che appena sentono una voce in maschera o davabti ad un grande nome si lanciano in standing ovation e "bravo" accettando acriticamente tutto ciò venga loro propinato.
Resta il fatto che quella rappresentazione, che ha una registrazione, resta di assoluto riferimento nell'interpretazione Verdiana. Quei loggionisti ci sentivano male!
Poiché, come lei afferma il popolo italiano ( quale? ) sente l'opera lirica come qualcosa di vivo, non per inciviltà, ma per amore e passione, da totali incompetenti, potevano e potrebbero presumere di dare indicazioni di interpretazione musicale ad uno dei massimi direttori esistiti. Ma dove?

E' diritto del pubblico esprimere la propria opinione e dissentire se necessario. Ma mantenendo il decoro imposto dal luogo e dal rispetto dovuto all'artista (il quale, si approvi o meno le sue scelte esecutive, sicuramente ne capisce più del pubblico). In questo caso oltretutto, a giudicare dalle registrazioni, la conduzione di Kleiber mi è parsa eccellente quindi non riesco proprio a spiegarmi una così violenta e insistente reazione

Le public de la Scala en ce temps là était féroce et cruel ,souvent partial aussi .Callas en a fait les frais pendant la meilleure époque de sa carrière .Et je vois avec cette archive qu'elle n'était pas la seule à subir cela .Un tel public ne mérite pas des artistes reconnus dans le monde entier .Que les Milanais restent dans leur médiocrité !

Io personalmente sin da quando ero piccolo, - avevo 3 anni- mandavo a quel paese tutti i direttori italiani tranne questi 4 nomi, I DIRETTORI ITALIANI PER ANTONOMASIA, : Victor de Sabata, Guido Cantelli, Carlo Maria Giulini, Giuseppe Sinopoli...
