You should try the Swedish band Ghost! Dance macabre, Cerice or Life eternal. If you haven't done that you have a journey to make 😀. /Robert from Sweden PS Love your voice DS
The reason he sounds different in the verses is because he was singing through a megaphone, which kind of with other effects, muted and somewhat distorted his voice so to the natural ear. It just sounds weird not having that live.
You talked about this bringing you back to your childhood. Hearing Santana's guitar again brought me back to first hearing the Abraxas album in the fall of 1970. I was long out of childhood by then but still a kid at heart. Good to feel that way again! And happy to see that this kind of music can still excite young people half a century down the line. 🌛
I was driving my kids to school the first time I heard this and I looked at my daughter and said, "That's Santana!" It had beed over decades since I had heard one of his songs. It was the guitar! No one had that signature and it was unmistakable. I loved him when I was in High School, but here I was probably 20 years later and I was transported back. You are right, This is one of the happiest songs ever written. Can't sit still.
@@rat4spd According to Wikipedia, the song was started by Itaal Shur and then, without the original lyrics, given to Rob Thomas for completion. I understand that he not only wrote new lyrics, but also changed the melody. Originally, he suggested George Michael as singer. But after hearing the demo, Carlos Santana wanted him to sing the song himself.
@@friedemannkemm63 It all came about by an Arista A&R executive named Pete Ganbarg. For Santana wanting to make a comeback, Clive Davis, who signed Santana to Columbia, requested he give Ganbarg half the album for work with artists popular at the time. The rest of the album he could do whatever he wished and Santana agreed. Itaal Shur manager was solicited for songs. Being a fan of Santana, Shur was eager to write a song for their new album. He wrote a piece called “Room One Seven,” and the label loved the tune, but not the lyrics. Ganbarg asked Shur to collaborate with Thomas, who would rework the lyrics he had composed. It was Thomas’ performance on a demo of “Smooth” that sold Santana on the idea of him performing on the record. It was the first song he ever wrote that he wasn’t going to perform himself. Carlos said, ‘I like this guy. Does he sing? I believe it when he sings.’ He had no idea who Thomas even was.
There's a story out there that when Rob was pitching this song to Santana that Carlos stopped him at the line "change my life to better suit your mood." He asked Rob if he was married to an Hispanic woman and Rob responded that he was. Carlos answered that he could tell by that line. Can't vouch that it's a true story but it sounds like it might be.
Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán (Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, July 20, 1947) is a Mexican nationalized American guitarist. In 1966 he founded the Santana band, a pioneer in fusing Latin music with rock. Santana has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide (counting the sales of his band and his solo career). He has won ten Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards. He is married to Cindy Blackman, known for being a drummer for Lenny Kravitz. His brother Jorge Santana was also a musician, recognized for being one of the founders of the group Malo.34 In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 20th on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time;5 he was subsequently ranked 90th on its prestigious "100 Greatest Artist of All Time" list. "6 Also, with Santana, his albums Santana (1969) and Abraxas (1970) are part of the 500 best albums of all time, being he the producer and main composer.7 He is also part of the list of the Top 100 Artists of All Time, ranking 9
The reason he doesn't sound the same in the verses is because there's a radio effect on his voice in the verses on the album recording. Go listen to it, trust me, he sounds perfectly good here.
I first remember listening to Santana from recordings from Woodstock. I went on a binge of buying every album he ever put out. Love his sound. It was so original in the late 60s early 70s and it still is. Cover some more of his stuff such as "Soul Sacrifice" or "Black Magic Woman" . They are truly remarkable.
This is a classic and makes you move from the first notes played. It’s one of those pieces that makes me teary because it’s SO beautiful! I get like that when I see or hear performances, sings, dances that are extremely soul touching.
Oh man, Santana will have us all dancing, no matter what he's playing! He's a genius! 🔥🤯💯 You're right, Rob doesn't sound so good here. The magic done in recording studios is amazing! Thanks for picking this one!
Your reactions are always amazing. You are right that the key was a little low for Rob Thomas in this song. This is actually a song that I have covered before. Granted, it was many years ago. It is a very fun song to sing, but you definitely have to have that lower register to be able to pull it off fully. Thank you so much for reacting to this video. You really brought back my childhood.
This is the original key. I always thought the verses were too low for Rob, which made it hard for him to give it vocal character. But the song requires a bit more vocal range than Rob can do well, so he made it work for him.
New subscriber here! There is no better way to start my day than listening to Santana! ❤ I love Santana, ❤ and really appreciate your style. The fact that you take a little time to educate yourself and your audience about the artist. Every time I hear Santana I am instantly in a great mood. Thank you! 🎶🕺💃🎶🕺💃🎶🕺💃🎶🕺💃🎶
You're missing something important about Rob Thomas's approach to singing this song: He's creeping. The song is about an overwhelming obsession with a woman that he doesn't think returns his passion equally. OMG, Carlos threw in a Santana jam at the end. Magnifico!
No. Creeping is about imposing one's affections on a woman irrespective of her feelings; creepers don't change themselves, they expect (demand!) to be accepted by their love interest as-is. The modern take on this song would be its an anthem about simping ("change my life to better suit your moods"); but it is also about expecting a fair return on the (considerable) effort being put forth. A one-sided relationship is never fun, there is a point to the demand that you picked up on. As opposed to just being demanding.
Lol, don’t worry about Robs voice, did you even hear the bass, bottom of the grooving that song? And that crowd bouncing off the ceiling? That’s all you need to know ! Oh, and Santana can play too !
Really appreciate that you investigated and informed your audience about the song, band and members. Also loved your appreciation of this classic song 🎵 ❤ 💕
Seen Carlos twice in venues about this size and it was mind-blowing. If you ever get a chance, you should definately see him. Love the review, and thanks for your Christmas song: it was lovely. Hope your life is delighting you as much as you delight your fans. Love ya!
So glad you played this live version. Have seen Santana live numerous times and it's always AWESOME. Check out the beautiful stage and backdrop, the group of very talented musicians and array of numerous instruments. AND THE CROWD! Always a very diverse crowd with everyone dancing together in camaraderie and friendship! I always leave with such a wonderful feeling! I know you were a little disappointed with Mr. Thomas's singing, but I have seen this song performed many times, sometimes with other singers, and Rob Thomas adds an electricity to it that is unmatched. Maybe because he wrote it. Loved your reaction to this living legend that is SANTANA! He has enlightened my life with wonderful music for over 50 years now. All the way back to the first Woodstock! Check out his Supernatural release. Packed with great artists and great music!
I agree with your assessment with Rob Thomas' vocals on this live version. In his defense the band is overpowering his vocals. In the "studio" version the sound engineer can bring up the vocals so it is not drowned out by the band. Santana's band is spot on. In a track with so much energy most singers would get overpowered.
If you think rob isn’t good live you have another thing coming…… this was at the Grammys….. they are known for mediocre sets and sound design. Rob live with his band (matchbox 20) is an incredible performer . Notice how Santana didn’t sound the best here either ….. it’s because it’s the Grammys nothing more
Hello beautyful Lady, i love Carlos Santana ! For me his the very very very very best of all, every woman listen him play Gitarre 🎸 must fall in love with him ! Greatings from germany ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
it's missing EFX. The studio engineered song has parts using the old school radio effect and the transitions are to deeper resonant echo/reverb/delay to produce a richer sound tone. Great channel Maggie!
Please note Carlos plays a Paul Reed Smith guitar - Hand crafted in Maryland. Carlos is a guitar icon - One of the best of the best. Smooth is for his playing....
Carlos Santana has said in previous interviews that, when Rob Thomas shared the lyrics with him, he wondered how it was that Rob knew about Hispanic culture - specifically, what a "Muñequita" was. Then he met Rob's wife, and it all made sense.
I feel like Rob Thomas sounds exactly the same it just doesn't come through as clearly because in the verses he kind of sings quietly when it gets the chorus he finally ups the volume of singing
As far as I know Carlos Santana is a Mexican musician born in Autlán de Navarra, Jalisco, México. Later on he became estadounidense. His music has that influence.
Rob sounds different in the verses on the live version because they put a filter over his voice during the verses of the studio version, that's the reason it sounds different. They made his voice sound deeper on the studio version during the verses.
My favorite Santana album is maybe "Caravenserei" but from his newer stuff i also really enjoyed the songs he did with Michelle Branch (The Game of Love, I'm feeling you), they have such a nice summer feel-good vibe and when we finally get some summer here in northern germany, i often listen to them.
@@maggiereneemusic Sorry but i didn't watched it since i'm no big fan of growling and screaming. Its ok if used in small doses but not if its more than maybe 10-15% of the song. Btw. Alissa has really nice clean voice, she made that duo with Charlotte Wessels from ex Dealain, whished she would do more like that. I'm for example really happy about what Melissa Bonny now does with Ad Infinitum while Rage of Light was also something i didn't really like because too much growling. Oh, but i watched your Scorpions video, its funny to see somebody who didn't know them since i know tham already since 1986 maybe and really loved their album "Fly to the rainbow" that i first heared at my older brother 😄🤘🏼 Also i'm german, so of course i know them and "Winds of Change" was a big thing here just like Roger Waters "The Wall" show he did in Berlin.
On the recording and in the video there's a lo-fi effect to make his voice sound like it's coming through a radio. The choruses are done without the effect, so that part sounds more familiar to you.
Love your reactions as always. Smooth was a great song though it was later in his career. Carlos was known for his guitar work and his fusion of Latin sounds with electric rock, rather than for his vocals. Would love to see you react to something earlier, like Evil Ways from 69 or 70. I graduated high school in 1970 so I grew up in the Woodstock era, with Santana, Hendix, the Alman Brothers, and Janis Joplin. Soul Sacrifice is an instrumental that everyone loves in part due to the long drum battle that goes on in the middle.
I have a feeling that some people are unaware of Rob using an effect on his voice on the verses (possibly thought of to help Rob out with the low range used in the verses), which he then reverts to his usual studio voice during the choruses, belts at the end etc. If you have never noticed this before, you will now :)
Your not being fair to him. They used some special effect, to make his vocals different in the beginning and other parts afterwards, on the recorded version, to make his vocals sound distant, like on an old radio.
Maggie watch the clip shot out in the street (which also features Rob Thomas' wife) as the official video, it is even better with a cast of people dancing.
Maggie, Carlos started so long ago, and you have to go back to Woodstock to really appreciate his talent, try Soul Sacrifice from that 'happening' in 1969 !
You are right, the studio version is much better, to me mostly because of clarity. Nobody ever talks about it but this tune has a seriously underrated bass line, of course much more noticeable on the official version.
I think on the verse rob sounds like himself they just really edited his voice for the recorded version to have this effect on it. cause i agree i was taken aback by his natural voice too never hearing this live, but once i got used to his real voice its pretty good
