The most sick opening i even seen, dont think anyone have ever try the things Carlsen doing. He is just bored to play all the safe openings. We have never ever witnessed a player who is this strong and have so deep understanding about the game. Kasparov,Fisher never played this kind of fun stuff. Hope Magnus keep doing what he is doing for many more years 👍

Many years ago there was this anonymous online player, who in every game advanced all his pawns to the third rank and then crushed his GM opponents. Many thought it was Fischer.

Yeah, it is clear that Magnus is the one player who thinks differently. He is the greatest by some margin historically. ALL other players talk about the evaluation bar in relation to human moves and computer rationale. Therefore, suggestions the computer makes, that are beyond human understanding currently, are dismissed as a separate entity to live chess. Magnus is clearly analysing the crazy methods employed by AI chess bots, identifying where humans will NOT see the deeper plays, and using the faulty rationale that AI chess is beyond us. Elements of it are not, and it appears to me that Magnus is the only who is actually evolving human chess as we watch in real time, by utilising these insane ideas that are being presented to us by superior technology. When you break it all down, Magnus thinks about it in a different way, unrestricted by limitations, exposed by AI engines. I enjoy watching Hikaru so so much and he is clearly the 2nd best chess player of all time, again by some margin from the rest. Some will compete effectively against him in bullet / blitz and some will handle him well in classic forms. But, few, if any, will stand toe to toe, over a sustained period, over both time formats. But Magnus is clearly a Jordan, Ali, Brady, Phelps breed of the game.... He is cut from that cloth, in his own field. What a wonderful time to be a chess fan. Ideas that go way over your head, and way out of range of your personal ability, but you can see the genius behind the display regardless.

D4 or E4 ARE GM LEVEL MOVE BUT ROOK PAWN MOVES ARE SUPER GM LEVEL. MAGNUS IS PLAYING BY INSTINCT .HIKARU FOUGHT VERY WELL BUT TO ME NOT LOSING AFTER THOSE FIRST 4MOVE IS ALMOST WINING. a6 Nc3 Na2 b4 LOOKS LIKE BIGGENER MOVE RATHER THAN WORLD CHAMPION'S LEVEL MOVE.PLAYED AGAINST ONE OF THE TOP CHESS PLAYER OF RECENT TIME. “Many thought it was Fischer?” But what hard evidence is there of that, or was it all just speculation? Years ago…when Fischer was still alive (although psychotic and a social pariah), on-line chess was in its infancy, and many players easily cheated by using computers. It could have been anyone playing those games.

It's more so that he's combined how the CPU plays with his own human ability. The greatest flaw in the CPU is that it lacks ingenuity. You can beat it if you know how to bait it, but it can't really bait you. So Magnus is currently an ideal synergy between human creative and calculation vs CPU calculation, the former filling in for where human ability fails to completely incorporate the latter.

I do believe Magnus's magic is twofold. He has incredible intuition, even compared to other GMs and so when he throws traditional openings away his opponents have to play chess they haven't practiced the same way as the more traditional ones. That gives Magnus an edge already. The second thing is that he finds weird openings that haven't been practiced and where a natural looking move by his opponent is actually a blunder (like Hikaru's one at the beginning of this match). That's a bad trap, when you're playing fast chess and you are in an unfamiliar position and your intuition fails you.

Carlsen has always done his best to get out of opening theory. That's where many people get him wrong. Actually Magnus,s style of play in the opening has been known since the 20s as the hyper modern style where white (or black) is tempted to throw their pawns forward while black attacks from the flank hoping to take advantage of the weaknesses left behind. I don't think it is boredom as many suggest. I think it is the next level of human chess playing out and he is just finding his way, in an arena that no one else thought to enter. It is clear that Magnus is the one player who thinks differently. He is the greatest by some margin historically. Some of that may be down to fortune of era, so to speak. Hard to say Federer or Nadal are better than Bjorg and Mcenroe, based on the fact they never used graphite rackets or benefited from superior biological advancements in diet and training etc.. The same could be said for online chess and engines, so cant be clear on potential greatness, dependant on era and info available alone. However, no arguing that the chess these 2 beasts play, simply outmatches anything the real versions of previous greats displayed. ALL other players currently, talk about the evaluation bar in relation to human moves and computer rationale. Therefore, suggestions the computer makes, that are beyond human understanding currently, are dismissed as a separate entity to live chess and dismissed as unrealistic winning odds etc. Magnus is clearly analysing the crazy methods employed by AI chess bots, identifying where humans will NOT see the deeper plays, and using the faulty rationale that AI chess is beyond us to his benefit. Elements of it are not beyond use when used to trap humans in places they currently can't see., and it appears to me that Magnus is the only who is actually evolving human chess as we watch in real time. Mostly by utilising these insane ideas that are being presented to us by superior technology. When you break it all down, Magnus thinks about it in a different way, unrestricted by limitations, exposed by AI engines. My perception of Magnus has always been that he thinks outside of the box. I also have always gotten the impression that so many players feel they need to learn the cutting-edge theory the top players are playing and then understand the themes they use in the games, to attempt to win all of their games, that same way, since there isn't much left to discover in chess. I am also of the opinion that Magnus has gotten "bored" with playing all the usual stuff, which is what has prompted him to think outside the box and try things that are different. The first time I saw him move all of his pawns forward one square and then absolutely destroy an IM, I knew he was special in this regard, and it was why he was doing it. It wasn't because of something an engine said, though he may have consulted SESSE to see about the move order for a theme he was working on, but the basis of the ideas are uniquely his and they are a part of what makes him special.

Magnus has much higher intelligence than other players. Chess skill doesn’t automatically mean ultra high intelligence. He knows 1) computers are extremely valuable for chess learning, and far more importantly 2) humans aren’t even in the same stratosphere of play as computers. Critically important, to say that a position is -1.5 doesn’t tell you anything. -1.5 after a couple moves in the opening means little because no human can play the exact 10 moves the computer has in mind to realize this advantage. -1.5 in a simple ending is clearly just winning. The number itself doesn’t always matter in an unclear or difficult position. Magnus is willing to go down -1.5 lines to get his opponent into positions where their moves are difficult to find. That 1.5 advantage on move 5 isn’t real. It’s not “white has a pawn and a half” it’s “white has a pawn and a half advantage in 15 moves from now with perfect 3500 level calculation”.

Hikaru should’ve castled first chance he got seems like the game went downhill for him after that well he did make it a game after all I thought it was the beginning of the end for him tight game great play by both Hikaru should realize tho Magnus is not the one to fall for tricks Hikaru is Clever that’s for sure Thanks for the game James hope you’re feeling better

Groking the game of chess is, bonding with positional judgement, not mastering it, which means control. Obviously, Carlsen has been the only player in chess that has become chess itself but the opposition is literally & figuratively clueless. Niemann is going to b the other in the future of the game.

what a rollercoaster of a game. how often to they blitz each other? I'd watch more of them go at it. I wonder how pumped up they are when knowing they're blitzing each other

Hikaru should be sad after losing a potential winning here. Queen invasion of Hikaru on b5 has balanced the situation for him. btw, welcome back ;)

I think what needs to be questioned is the computer evaluation, we think chess has been solved because we have powerful engines but ten years from today those same engines will be weak and unreliable.

Didnt make me question chess. Not a good game by Magnus. Hikaru blundered not trapping the black bishop. He had the game. Magnus position crashed. Hikaru just missed Queen A3. But one thing i learn from Magnus. There is technically no best opening. If this was a video game, he would need to be nurfed 😅
