Anand and Carlsen crossed swords against each other in round four of the Lindores Abbey Chess Stars 2019. In round three Anand had already played against Carlsen and had lost the game with black pieces. Round 4 was on the next day, and Vishy had the white pieces. He opened the game with 1.e4 and the response was 1...d6!? The Pirc it was. Have a look at how the game progressed between two of the greatest players in the world of chess.

At 33:39 Magnus Carlsen takes a sip of water!!!! Awesome!!! I mean literally that is the only drama in this video. No one can see the game because of the camera angle and there is all the emotional intensity and body language of two strangers waiting for a bus that is late, who are too self involved to strike up a conversation.
@artkitectbeats1622
@artkitectbeats1622 2 года назад
Sooo you watch chess for drama? Who cares if theres no drama, the camera angle isnt the greatest but anyone who plays chess on a relatively regular basis can follow along just fine, striking up a conversation goes against chess etiquette, this isnt prison. Talking to your opponent while he or she is concentrating is equivalent to putting a brick wall in front of a pitcher during a baseball game while hes trying to pitch. If anything I just said to you sounds wrong then you really dont need to be watching chess.
@kitdu7828
@kitdu7828 2 года назад
i have to agree. this game was a yawner. There are many aggressive lines for white against the pirc but none forthcoming from Anand. He was playing it safe. Not sure why this game was selected for a video.

@tonymart5190
@tonymart5190 5 лет назад
They both were passive. 7.Bc4 was an inaccuracy. d5 simply, or Bc3 was the better square for his bishop. I was expecting carlsen to force the issue there with 7...Nxe4. 8.d5 lacked the initiative after e3. 11...b3? Was a throwaway move. Developing the rook to e8 or posting his knight on f5 were stronger options. 18.Be2 was a waste when he could have centralized his knight.
