I think it was simply a case of microsleep. It is complety involuntary and it happens when you are really tired. Carlsen is a genius, but he is still a young genius so maybe he overexerted the night before trying to be more prepared for this game.

+Tiago like the moves they are playing..you see, there is numbering and alphabetically ordered markings on the chess board which facilitates writing the moves played during the game..at the end of the game both players exchange the writing and sign it as proof of record. Previously, when there were no cameras it was very usefully..its still practiced now! Just google chess board images, you will get the idea. If you listen carefully to the commentators, you will hear them saying rook c4, bishop a3, something like that..
