Love this data based approach Pom! We definitely need a tweak around the edges however maintain our 1 Wood strength in the middle as you’ve detailed. Providing Cerra and others with more defined roles / jobs in game when not in midfield be it defensive or attacking will bare fruit.

i KNOW YOU'RE SPLITBALLING, BUT GOOD FOR YOU, YOUR SYNOPSIS IS CONVINCING. I think Vossy is always thinking and trying stuff, and with more players available I'm sure he knows he has a lot of options he would like to try out, but he needs to find his best 23 by round 21, and let them gel. As you said, we are not far away from the best, and in the top 6 in important metrics. The past is the past. With our 2nd place seemingly in jeopardy I think Voss will make the hard calls and I look forward to this evolution of Carlton circa 2024. Great analysis Pom. Process driven. Love it.

I think you're on the right track here. Ollie is all role and no game(that will come). Getting Cerra and resting/switch Walsh might mean we will play that wing more(less predictable) i was thinking HB but couldn't figure out the other magnets to move, using Cerra effectively as a loose defender from the wing make more sense. I honestly think he's perfect for the role. Walsh, less so,but he would play more like Gulden does.
@PommyinOZ
@PommyinOZ Месяц назад
Agree think Ollie will be fine. Would love him to vfl it for 3 weeks get some forward half wing work like binns (he was miles ahead of binns as a junior here) amd then maybe give him the cotters wing forward as comp as we rotate players

There is one thing missing from all the stats and lineup talk: actual setup around the ball in specific situations and movement once the ball goes up....okay two things. There are two things missing from the stats and lineup talk: actual setup around the ball in specific situations, movement once the ball goes up, and how the boys interact with what their direct opponent....okay, three things. There are three things....well, you get the idea. We get it right and destroy the opposition. Then for some reason this falls away and they're wrestling, moving the wrong way, rushing, nobody is available to receive, and so on. Also, for much of the successful run last year and earlier this year, we had an extra pair of hands on the defensive side (usually Newman or Docherty), and sometimes on the other side. That's gone now. When it's all cooking, they move with purpose with the assigned bull going for the ball, one guy holding space, and the third moving to provide a helpful angle. Variations on this are when the ruckman grabs the ball and disposes properly (rather than tipping straight to an opponent) and tapping it to ground in space where a teammate has the advantage. That's mostly all gone recently. This time even giving the opposition so much time and space that Bont or someone can simply waltz in and steal in from a Blues player's hands. Or we're on the wrong side of the play entirely because we're reacting to the physical play of the opponent and not to what's happening with the ball. We know what works, and have done it over and over. Now it stopped and we're reacting instead of leading. IMHO this is similar to the weird lineup choices lately, and possibly instruction on defensive setup behind the ball in the forward half. I don't know how much of the latter is instruction and how much is the players just not paying attention to each other and leaving that gap or not putting the numbers where they're needed around stoppages. Point is, I think Voss and his staff are fiddling with lineups in reaction to what they're afraid of, as if they're listening to the chatterati in fan fora and videos going on about how we're too slow, lacking skills and all that BS. Reacting to some perceived threat and messing up chemistry rather than having the confidence to be what we are and let the @#$%ing opponent adjust instead. You didn't see Geelong constantly mix it up to go with what the opposition might do in their flag year, nor Melbourne in theirs. Voss certainly did experience that back when he was captain for three in a row. I can name great NBA teams that go into games saying, this is us, @#$% you, you adapt to us. I want two rucks most of the time and the Fab Five and proper rotations around positions, get the damn spacing right, move in concert rather than allowing your opponent to dictate everything. This is so much more mental than physical. Specific guys sacrifice their body, while others have the role of receiver, blocking (not the ruck, rules is rules), or being the extractor. It's a simple game, don't make it complicated, and don't try to find something that isn't there when you know what damn well works. I'm saying that last bit to Voss and his staff and players, not directed at you with the analysis.
@PommyinOZ

Great comment and 100% agree, Hence why i tried to mirror what we see (disregarding the most effective line up) to suit what our brand is, When we play Pitt and expect him to work the Hewett Role at stopping the runner coming through, it directly effects over lap run from Newy and Saad as if they go too early and we lose the ball we are caught out the back, happened last two weeks a lot. Then we start to drop deep to compensate, which then creates major congestion in the middle so we over handball, the idea of this video is exactly what you say we impact we dont react, which i feel Voss is trying to Rob Peter to Pay Paul via changing the mix to compensate the area of concern, where i feel we go bold and back it in and say this is us

Thanks Dan. Good to get George back in and start to use Kennedy correctly. I guess Pitto goes out. Does Cunners get a run? He is a very different skillset to Ollie. He might swap with Cotters.
@PommyinOZ
@PommyinOZ Месяц назад
Deffo what this was looking at is all the top sides have a dedicated crew on the ball then float points of difference. So yes cunners motters etc all could be in, this was more to showcase how you'd fix your stoppage defence and keep your output but then have room to float players through without effecting balance
@ShlomirBareket
@ShlomirBareket Месяц назад
Midfield failure the last two weeks, maybe time to try the other Durdin down back, definite drop Marchbank, Pitto, O Hollands and Cottrel. Hewitt, Motlop, Carrol IN. IF we don't have a defensive midfield against the North mids, who are very good, we will get pantsed worse than we did against the Doggies. We have gone from A-grade midfield to D-grade in two weeks. Cerra and Walshy letting the team down, are both injured?
@PommyinOZ
@PommyinOZ Месяц назад
Don't think cerra Walsh are hurt hence this video the numbers when they both split midfield are woeful but individually good. Same with tdk and pitt both on their own go well when we half their time it goes down hill. Rowbottom played North he is the Hewett replacement hence them selling so for me sort your main 4 in the middle, and then use others to change it up, at the moment over last 5 weeks we've tinkered here top much hence the midfield failure. Feels like we've robbed our strength to try and fix elsewhere
@ShlomirBareket

@@PommyinOZ well then it's just form. Anyway they have alot to think about. It's interesting how we go from all the role players going hard and pressure for a few weeks, to faffing around. Sure it's 'hard' to win games, but puhleease, you think if things have really 'clicked' they have clicked ya know?? But this scoring so easily from our back half shit has got to stop. I mean we are a bottom 4 team for scores against, we need punchers and fisters back there and someone who can do a kick-out properly, enough of this 6-metre chip-chip soccer bullshit, and I mean come on Saad, Perovic and Christou never did those 5 metre chip bullshit to earn their 'woofs', ya got a good right footy farken use it, take shots on goal like Thouey used to do FFS!!! That shit is as bad for play-dynamics as Harry missing his side-on set shots! It's always so easy for the opps to score on turnover, but when we do it, it's don't so poorly , you could have Mick Nolan spoiling the contest of fricken Curnow, who has bee 'off' all year, he looks like he's scared of getting injured or something... SAKE!
@Sebastian-gu8ix
@Sebastian-gu8ix Месяц назад
love the analysis and plan. Does this mean Cotters on the wing more and then comes out for Doc if he can get up? Love Matt Kennedy but I expect hes the mid who misses out when Martin comes back, unless they sacrifice the tag role and drop Cincotta. Do you think the incredible form of Cerra last year came at the expense of Walsh? Or is it worth trying to get back to last years set up (Hewett/Cripps/Walsh/Cerra but with TDK instead of Pitto) even if it means losing Cincotta as a tagger (or Cincotta tagging interceptors and dropping a Fogarty or Cottrell)? Very interested to see what blues best team looks like to end the year. Thanks for the analysis and content. Always good
@PommyinOZ
@PommyinOZ Месяц назад
In this plan the guys up top and around would need 3 of them to pinch hit, so cotters deffo in this play could take 50 wing and play half forward which would allow Elijah to dabble on the ball, if you play cunners he can play forward pinch around the ball, and so on. I think long term we probably look at cincotta and go do we want a runner or a tagger or even a 3rd target

If Pom was a spectator in my early days as a Collingwood fan, he’d be taping Collingwood games that are played on Friday and Saturday nights to watch early the next morning just so he can watch Alan Didak (but would still be Carlton because of his Father-in-law’s policy) but Pom would still be a big Alan Didak fan nonetheless

Pommy I wouldn’t worry about points against cos we will just outscore the opposition. We are the 2nd highest scoring team to counter the points against. We should really win our next 6, which means we have out scored our opponents and finish 2nd. The stat that every team that has won flag in last 20 years has been top 6 for points against is irrelevant in this situation. We could finish 2nd and still be bottom 6 for points against. Once finals start ,if we win, once again we will just out score our opponents . We just have to get it right in finals
@PommyinOZ
@PommyinOZ Месяц назад
Spot on, deffo not majorly concerned as we know most of the valued stats like points are based on differential which tells the tale of what you are doing in game. This video was more how stoppage and high scores are linked and why Voss is frantically finding an answer My good man

@PommyinOZ
@PommyinOZ Месяц назад
Data led analysis, the side we picked has stuck to the principals of how we've been tracking which is top of all champions metrics for flags, our weakness is the link between stoppage and scores against. So from that we build the balance. Which has been disjointed by dropping Hewett, and Kennedy and adding another ruck and winger
@michaelmcclure3383

Half Back.Wing Rotation. 2021 Walsh i think is the model when we look at Sam, 60 on wing 40 on the ball like a Gulden burst player he polled 30 votes that year, And Cerra best work has been outside then pinch hitting on ball at freo and early season with us!
